Anteaters are so called because they eat ants or white ants.

Many anteaters have heads and mouths adapted for gathering their food (1). For example, they may have narrow heads and sticky tongues.

The pangolins of Africa and Asia are known as scaly anteaters. They look like pine cones, especially when they curl up inside their shields of overlapping scales.

The name anteater is mainly used for three mammals that live in the hot, humid forests of Central and South America: the giant anteaters the tamandua and the dwarf anteaters. They lack some or all of the usual mammal teeth.

Anteaters have a tube-like mouth containing a long tongue. They have strong, curved claws for breaking open white ant nests (2).

Female anteaters usually give birth to only one baby a year. It rides on the mother’s back for several weeks after it is born.

The largest of three American anteaters is the giant anteater. Its body is about three feet long, with a bushy tail that adds another three feet. It has a gray coat.

On its shoulders are black marks edged in white (3). The body color blends with sunlight and shadow in the forest, so the animal can safely hide from its enemies.

The giant anteater has no permanent home. It wanders alone searching for food, stopping only to curl up and sleep. It has a tube-like mouth containing a long tongue, which it uses  to help eat up white ants. It is sometimes called an ant-bear.

The tamandua, or collared anteater, is only half as big as the giant anteater. The tamandua lives in trees, where it can cling to branches with its strong, almost hairless tail. Its fur is yellow-brown, with a darker vest and collar.

The smallest anteater is the dwarf anteater, also called the silky or two-toed anteater. It is about the size of a large squirrel.

Unlike the stiff fur of other anteaters, the dwarf anteater’s golden hair is very soft and silky. The animal often lives in silk-cotton trees, which bear silk-like fruit pods that match the anteater’s fur coat.

The dwarf anteater can grip the tree with its tail and defend itself with its two long claws if an enemy attacks.

1.       Many anteaters have heads and mouths adapted for gathering their food.

Its claws were adapted for digging. / This style is not adapted to adults.

2.       …curved claws for breaking open white ant nests.

He turned on the radio. --- 宾语是名词) / He turned it on.

3.       On its shoulders are black marks edged in white.
