She Was And Would Always Be There

It’s a typical Chinese house located in the south of China. Its outside was left in the natural grey concrete color with two dragon head carvings at the end of the gables. Two stone lions stood majestically at both sides of the main door. It was not easy to see what the house contained by peeking through the front gate. There were no windows on the outside walls, so the only opening to the outside was through the front gate. When one looked through the first doorway of the house only a brick screen was visible. In the center of the house was a clean courtyard called Tianjing. This traditional big Chinese house had been quiet. Because of the coming of twenty soldiers of Kuomintang, it became bustling with noise.

This was a fine early autumn morning as usual. The fresh chilly morning air was like the first breath of autumn. Birds were chirping cheerfully in the trees. The young handsome officer woke up and prepared to have a wash beside the well in the courtyard. When he stepped out of his room, he came across a gentle expression from a pretty girl’s eyes and seemed to get an electric shock. She’s a typical seductive south girl with a slender figure and an exquisite little face. Maybe it’s just called love at first sight, he thought. The girl stared at the soldier who had a tough outline in a second and offered a shy smile. Then said “morning” to the young man and turned around, leaving the soldier standing still. They fell in love at first sight.

The nineteen-year-old girl was the youngest daughter in the family. It was a local blue-blooded family. She was brought up in the cradle full of love for she is the youngest. The army was just stationing here temporarily, even they themselves didn’t know when to leave.

That’s a good time neither of them would ever forget. The nice and cool breeze of autumn. The beautiful sunset which was like the pretty girl’s rosy cheek. The gentle silver moonlight. The crisp laughter under the trees. The typical Chinese paper umbrella in the rainy days. The delicious breath of rain in the air. All the things were so real, so pure and so sweet. However, good time is always short-lived.

The news that Kuomintang was defeated in the civil war alarmed everybody. That meant the army should retreat to Taiwan and the officer would leave.

“It’s rainy outside. Don’t go out and just stay at home.’’ The officer said in low spirits.

“No. I want to accompany you to the ferry.” The girl replied in a tearful voice.

The ferry is not far away. It was like an old man and had seen all kinds of departure. The small road seemed to stretch itself to the endless distance. Along the way the two lovers stepped slowly and broke into wordless. That’s a rainy night. Silver mist rose gently from the lake. All was still. The air was cold and the coldness seemed to reach into their souls. The whistle was ringing and all the soldiers were on the board except the officer. They hugged tightly because neither of them knew when to meet again. Maybe five years or ten years or twenty years. Who knew? She saw the boat smaller and smaller and at last disappear in the distance. She whispered in her heart “I promise to wait you back, I promise.” The rain and her tears coursed down her face. When coming back home, she wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment in her mother’s arms.

The next day was another day. The brilliant sun rose as usual. Countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves. The tops of the trees were all aquiver with life. The world began to awaken. The girl got up and sat in front of the mirror. She dressed up in a red dress and then started to put on makeup. She painted her eyebrows back and her lips red. The rouge on her cheeks made her face soft red. She appeared to be a beautiful young lady and just wanted to show that her life didn’t change any more and everything went well. It wouldn’t be long before her husband got back.

Occasionally some upper class gentlemen would come to her to propose marriage. Every time she would smile gently and said firmly that she’s got married and her husband had just been in business outside.

When night came, she often strolled to the ferry and looked into the distance. The expression in her eye was so intent and gentle. She often saw a boat draw near and near. She believed that it’s her husband. Later it proved that it’s just her hallucination.

Years rolled around far too quickly. Thirty years passed constantly. Maybe thirty years is a passing moment in eternity. However, it meant almost a whole life to a young girl. She was an old lady now.

One day it occurred to the old lady that the officer died in Taiwan. Before he died, he had started a new family on that small island. To others’ surprise, she didn’t burst into tears. Quietly, she smiled. The smile was so gentle and elegant. She murmured, “I promise. I promise. ” She knew that she didn’t own anything to him as for love. She was the real blue blood in the world of love.
