奥普拉：苏姗妮说你付出了很大的代价，我想知道这个代价到底有多大。使你失去了童年的自由生活还是让你感觉很孤单？

MJ：当你成名以后，你不能做那些其他孩子都能做的事，而那些事在那些孩子看来是如此的平常。拥有朋友，享受和好伙伴在一起开派对的快乐，甚至外出随便逛逛，这些都不属于童年的我。那时候，除了我的兄弟们之外，我没有其它的朋友。

奥普拉：你曾经有过属于自己的空间吗？我记得我和伙伴们在那里玩耍，自言自语或者和玩具娃娃玩耍等等。我知道，每一个孩子都需要一个单独的空间，在那里，孩子可以无限畅想。你有过这样的经历吗？

MJ：没有。那些就是我一直渴望的，因为我那时候正是缺乏一个这样的空间。人们一直疑惑，为什么我总是让一群孩子围绕在我身边。我想是因为我从他们身上发现一些我从没有过的东西，比如迪斯尼乐园，游乐园，电玩游戏。我很崇拜那些游乐场所的员工，因为我觉得自己很渺小，我总是不停的工作，从一场演唱会到另一场演唱会。如果没有演唱会的话，我就要到录音棚录音；如果不需要录音的话，我就要参加电视节目，或者是访谈，或者是图片展，或者是其它什么。

奥普拉：你觉得……史摩基·罗宾逊和很多其他人士在评价你的时候都说过你就像一个成熟的灵魂附着在一个小孩身上一样。

MJ：当我还是……我记得当我还很小的时候我就一直听着人们叫我“四十五岁的小矮人”，不论我去哪，我都会经常听到那，我不想听到那，我从来没想过那些，就好像……人们总说“当你还很小的时候，你会开始想你将变得很好吗？”我想“我从来没有想过那些，我上台演出，然后走人”。我真的从来没有那些。

奥普拉：但是……你就是火热的迈克尔·杰克逊，你创造了如此多的奇迹，连续四次蝉联音乐排行榜的冠军，你也会哭，因为你想其他孩子一样。

MJ：其实，我……我喜欢表演行业，我仍然热爱表演行业。但是，当你……很多时候你想玩或者找找乐趣，失去那些让我感到很难过。我记得有一次，我已经准备好去南美洲，所有人都准备好了行李并把它放在车里了，他们都准备出发去表演。但是我藏起来了，藏着的时候我在哭，因为我真的不想去表演，我想去玩玩，我不想去表演。

奥普拉：当你受到众人的关注之后，你的兄弟们羡慕你吗？

MJ：这我不知道，应该不会吧。

奥普拉：你从来就没有被羡慕的感觉？

MJ：额……我想……没有吧。我想他们会为我感到高兴，因为我可以做一些事情，但我从没感觉到他们的嫉妒，没有。

奥普拉：你现在感觉到他们的嫉妒了吗？

MJ：我不这么认为，我不认我他们会嫉妒我，不会的。

奥普拉：你和你的家人的关系怎么样？你们还很亲近吗？

MJ：我非常爱我的家人。我希望我能抽出更多时间去看看他们。但是，我们都了解，我们是表演家族，我们都要工作。我们也有家庭聚会，我们找某个家人的房子聚在一起。可能是杰罗姆的房子，可能是马龙的房子，也可能是蒂托的房子，我们会聚在一起，我们是一个团体，团体里的每一个人都爱着对方，我们相互交谈，了解对方在做什么……

Oprah: Suzanne said it was a heavy price, I wanted to know how big price it was, losing your childhood or having this kind of life.

MJ: Well, you don't get to do things that other children get to do. You know the simple   things that they so much take for granted. Having friends, and slumber parties and buddies, and just hanging out, there was none of that for me. I didn't have any friends when I was...my brothers were my friends.

Oprah: Was there ever a place where...because you know, children, you know I remember we have playing games, talking to myself and playing with my dolls and all there. Was there... and I think every child needs a place to escape into a child's world, into a child's imagination, was there ever a time you could do that?

MJ: No, and that is why I think now because I didn't have it then I compensate for that.       I mean people wonder why I always have children around because I find the thing that I never had through them, you know, Disneyland, amusement park, arcade games, I adore all that stuff, 'cause I was little, I was always work work work, from one concert to the next, if it wasn't a concert there was a recording studio, if it wasn't that, it was a TV show, there's an interview, there's a picture session, there's always something to do.

Oprah: Did you feel...Smokey Robinson had said this about you and so as many other people that you are like on an old soul in a little body?

MJ: When I was...I remember hearing that all the time when I was very little they used to call me "45-year-old midget", wherever I went, I just always hear that, I just wouldn't hear that, I never thought about that, just like when...some people say "When you were little, will you start to think that you know you will that good?" I said "I never thought about that, I just did it and came out." I never thought about it really.

Oprah: So...here you were Michael Jackson with hits, your own had so many hits, four hits in a roll and you will cry because you couldn't be like other kids.

MJ: Well, I...I love show business, and I still love show business. But then you...there are times you want to play and have some fun and that part did make me sad. I remember one time, we were ready to go to South America, and everybody was packed up in the cars and ready to leave and go and played about. And I hid. And I was crying when I was hiding, 'cause I really did not want to go. I wanted to play. I did not want to go.

Oprah: Were your brothers jealous of you when you started getting on the attention?

MJ: Not did I know. No.

Oprah: You never felt the sense of jealousy?

MJ: Uh...I think...no. I think they are always happy for me that I could do certain things, you know, but I never felt jealousy among them. No.

Oprah: Do you feel their jealousy now?

MJ: I wouldn't think so. I don't think so. No.

Oprah: What's your relationship like with your family? Are you all close still?

MJ: I love my family very much. I wish I could see them a little more often than I do. But we understand 'cause we are show business family, and we all work. We do have family day we all get together, we pick a person's house, it might be Jermaine's house, Marlon's house, Tito's house, and everybody will come together, we are fellowship and love each other and talk and catch up on who's doing what and...
