《四库全书总目》“易类”文献浅论(傅荣贤)

Discussion on the “Yi type” works

in Catalogue of the Complete Library of the Four Branches of Literature

Fu Rongxian

Abstract: Classical works in Catalogue of the Complete Library of the Four Branches of Literature only includes 484 “Yi type” works written to explain Zhouyi (The Book of Changes), but does not include Zhouyi itself. This indicates that the “Dao” of Zhouyi exists in the “explanations” of “Yi type” works. Arranging “Yi type” works in chronological order, not only outlines the historical development of Yi-ology, but also confirms the content of Yi-ology study by constant “explanation”. Yi-ology study is to recognize the specific relationship between “us” under different situations and the universal Dao. In essence, Yi-ology is to design “our” own life at the level of Dao and share the significance of Dao in Zhouyi.

Keywords: Catalogue of the Complete Library of the Four Branches of Literature; Zhouyi; Yi type; Dao.

《四库全书》与乾隆文章经世观念初探(欧阳艳华)

A Primary Study of the Concept of Literary Statecraft of

the Emperor Qian Long and the Si Ku Quan Shu

Aoieong Imwa

Abstract: Si Ku Quan Shureflects Emperor Qian Long’s general idea of literature. The Qing Dynasty Emperors emphasized the classic texts and inherited the practice of using the Eight Paragraphs writing in examination. In order to contend the utilitarian tendency, Emperor Qian Long advocated the political and realistic value of the classic literature, denying its value as a pragmatic tool in examination. So he compiled the Tang Song Wen Chun in order to establish a common literary criterion and to demonstrate the dominant emperor authority. The compiling of the Si Ku Quan Shu had reinforced this intention of the Emperor Qian Long. It not only demonstrates the Emperor’s political utilitarian idea of literary, but also excluded Gu Wen Yue Xuan, an examination guide book compiled by Emperor Yong Zheng. This critical motion has established the status of Qin Ding Si Shu Wen as the only official standard of examination texts for all scholars to following. The idea replacement during this process shows the intention of the official Si Ku compilers to respond to the Emperor’s power and will to establish the standard of literature.

Key words: The Abstracts of the Si Ku Quan Shu; Tang Song Wen Chun; Qin Ding Si Shu Wen; the functional context in writing; establishing literary standard.

Writing and Authority: Siku Compilers' Tampering on the Author of Quan Shu Yi Wen Zhi

Ju Xiaofei

Abstract: Quan Shu Yi Wen Zhi is a collection of poems about the Shu(Sichuan) area compiled in Ming Dynasty. Since the Qing Dynasty, the identity of the compiler has been a controversial issue. Through the search for documents from the Ming Dynasty to the early Qing Dynasty, the author of this book should be confirmed as Yang Shen. However, after the compilation of Si Ku Quan Shu, Zhou Fujun has been marked as the author by the summaries of all the four cabinets. The reason behind: on the one hand, there is indeed an objective mistake, since Zhou Fujun has re-edited the Sichuan General Records, so the compilers trails and misreads Zhou's Sichuan General Records as the preface of Quan Shu Yi Wen Zhi, thus had logically mistaken him as the author of the later book; on the other hand, through the evaluation of Yang Shen in the Summary, it can be found that this mistake in Si Ku has also mixed with the compilers intention of defaming Yang Shen in order to establish the academic authority of the Qing Dynasty textology. At the same time, by modifying the author using the political authority of the Si Ku Quan Shu, the Si Ku compilers have disciplined the writing of other bibliographic works, which had a great impact on later generations.

Keywords: Si Ku compilers; Quan Shu Yi Wen Zhi; Yang Shen; Zhou Fujun.

What Is It Like to Be a Child?

Childness of Children’s Literature in the Age of Neuroscience

Maria Nikolajeva

Abstract: This article considers alternatives to the established constructivist approaches to children’s literature, exploring instead the potential of two relatively recent areas of inquiry, cognitive poetics and evolutionary literary criticism. The article questions the assumption, implied if not directly expressed by Peter Hollindale in Signs of Childness in Children’s Books (1997), that adult writers have the prerogative to write about a child’s experience because, since they once were children, a child’s mind is accessible to them; that they can know what it is like to be a child. With reference to brain research, this position is untenable due to the cognitive gap between adult and child. While this binary has been strongly opposed in children’s literature criticism, and while it is impossible and counterproductive to draw a clear-cut line between childhood and adulthood, Hollindale’s concept of childness suggests a number of qualities that cognitive studies considers irretrievably lost when the brain is restructured during adolescence. The purpose and attraction of children’s literature is therefore capturing and artistically representing these qualities.

Keywords: cognitive criticism, evolutionary criticism, neuroscience, memory, childhood, childness.

“The Bees of the Invisible”: A Theory of Children’s Poetry

Karen Coats

Abstract: The theory about children’s poetry I propose connects aesthetics with embodied experience, and travels through Heidegger’s theory of an emancipatory poetics. From here, I draw in and explain the relevance of Jacques Lacan’s theories of metonymy and metaphor, Julia Kristeva’s theory of the semiotic chora and other theories. I argue that children’s entry into language represents on a personal level the alienation and despair Heidegger located on a much grander political and social scale. As language and instrumental thought replace sensory pleasure and connection, children experience a profound sense of loss. Through the sensory aspects of children’s poetry, however, children can stay connected or reconnect to the material world, their own natures, and their interpersonal relationships. In order to keep the discussion grounded, my development of the theory will be related to an interpretation of Karen Hesse’s Out of the Dust

Keywords: children’s poetry; language; house of Bing; semiotic chora; sensory experience.

Affective Strategies, Emotion Schemas, and Empathic Endings:

Selkie Girls and a Critical Theory

John Stephens

Abstract: The selkie stories have formed a popular type of fairytales and had a lot of adaptation which aroused some research interest. This paper argues that the recent entrance of cognitive studies into children’s literature research enables a new perspective that can transform earlier research without discarding it – in this case, by enhancing an exposition of the gender ideology implied in five narrative events which structure the tale and its retellings. Affect is central to this procedure, because it guides comprehension by allowing engagement between text and reader self-concept, by enabling cross-domain categorisation of text elements, and by pre-structuring a reader’s understanding of the meaning of a text early in the reading process (Miall 1989). The core affective issue is that a happy outcome is not possible for all of the characters in the story. Focusing on empathic emotions inherent in the narrative close, the article argues that reader empathy with depicted characters and situations is shaped by familiar emotion schemas, that is, kinds of emotional response to situations and people that persist over time and across contexts.

Keywords: adaptation; script; cognitive studies; empathy; narrative closure.

National Context and Symbiotic Aesthetics:

Retelling Folktales in Ed Young’s Image Narratives

Tan Fengxia

Abstract: Folktales reflect the cultural memories of ethnic groups. Adopting ethnic folktales by overseas Chinese writers is a way to create ethnic cultural memories and build cultural identities. American Chinese Ed Young's picture books stand out and play a unique role in the field of children’s literature in USA. Among them, Chinese folktales are an important source of his subject matter. Young does not simply reproduce them, but combines the cultural spirits and artistic techniques of the East and the West to represent them. His works aim to "retell" old folktales with unique paintings which are based on tradition but also break tradition with Western factors. Young’s ethnic cultural identity is not onefold and closed, but quite diverse and open. His works with the blended cultural landscapes of the East and the West, reflect the pursuit of "symbiotic esthetics". It provides a successful experience for the innovation of children’s literature in the era of globalization, e.g., how to activate and take advantage of local or ethnic cultural resources, how to deal with the relationship between nationality and internationality, how to transform tradition into modernity, and how to attract people beyond national boundaries.

Keywords: Ed Young; folktale; retell; cultural identity; symbiotic aesthetics.

Confucian Scholars in the Early-Middle Period of Qing Dynasty and Their Female Students:

Centered around Mao Qilin and Xu Zhaohua

Wang Xiaoyan

Abstract: In the early and middle Qing Dynasty, some Confucian scholars also recruit female students. They were very restrict in observing the family educational tradition, thinking ability and ideology of these female students, and took this as the foundation for building the teacher-student relationship of poetic education. This is essentially different from those literati who emphasized on the talent, emotion and spirituality of female students, with comparatively loose standard of recruiting focusing on literature interests and poem creation. By recruiting the female students and promoting the publication of their works, the Confucian scholars have spread their thoughts and formed a wider frontier of Confucian classis scholarship around their female students. Investigation of this type of teacher-student relationship is an important approach to analyze the way of ideology spreading in Qing Dynasty, as well as a necessary supplement to the study of the student recruiting way of Qing Dynasty literati, thus has important significance.

Keywords: early and middle Qing Dynasty; scholar of Confucian classics; female students; Mao Qilin; Xu Zhaohua.

Eileen Chang’s English-Chinese Translation and Rewrite

of The Golden Cangue and The Rouge of the North

Wang Weiping,Wang Ying

Abstract: After immigrating to the United States and with her language advantage, Eileen Chang was proficient in bilingual creation, especially good at rewriting the same story in Chinese-English translation. Among them, the most frequently repeated story is her early medium-length novel The Golden Cangue. She rewrited this text into full length English and Chinese novels successively, and finally came back to its starting point, adapted the original Chinese medium-length novel into an English version. This period lasted for nearly 30 years. From this long process, we can see her infatuation of this story and her unremitting efforts for entering the market of American readers. There are not only her initial inclination of self-colonize writing in order to cater to foreign readers' imagination of ancient China, but also her steady restoration and perfection of her early texts. She eventually presented a more and more objective and real appearance of a Chinese feudal family to readers.

Keywords: Sino-English translation; Eileen Chang; The Golden CangueThe Rouge of the North.

Classical Description in the Balance between "Cold" and "Hot":

Cheng Qianfan's Creation of Modern Poems

Luo Zhenya, Cui Xiao

Abstract: Cheng Qianfan's modern poems not only convey the unique feelings as a modern person, but also have a strong classical atmosphere, which is especially consistent with his dual identities of a classical literature researcher and an old-style poetry writer. Through the new form of classical charm, his modern poems use the "cold treatment" and "cold humor" to control the inner sentiment and vent the anger to the aggressor, forming the unique artistic style of poetry in the balance of "cold" and "hot". This kind of poetic exploration also provides an important evidence that the modern poems have assimilated artistic conception from classical poetry in the 1930s and 1940s.

Keywords: Cheng Qianfan; modern poems; classicality.

Dionysus behind the“Li Bai Fever”:

On Hermann Hesse’s Spiritual Tradition and Ideological Transformation

Mo Yaping

Abstract: Around the First World War, Western literati and scholars paid more attention to Li Bai's poems than before, and especially set off a “Li Bai Fever” in the German literary circles. Herman Hesse’s Klingsors letzter Sommer uniquely refers to the protagonist and the author as Li Bai, and creatively cites Li Bai’s wine poems as the leading line to connect its theme: the fission and fusion of rational and irrational, decline and revival. Nietzsche's Dionysian spirit and powerful will gushes into this novel, revealing the universal aspirations in the turmoil and chaos for redemption and rebirth. Respectively taking Li Bai, Nietzsche and Hesse as the perspectives, this paper aims to analyze the wrestling and integration of Eastern and Western thoughts on the basis of close reading, and to deeply trace the backbone and turning point at the center of Hesse’s hope and spirit.

Keywords: Li Bai; Dionysian Spirit; Herman Hesse; Eastern influence to the West.

Absence in the Belief-Order-Communication-Obligation:

A Brief Analysis of A Doll's House in the View of Family Ethics

Ai Xiumei

Abstract: A Doll's House is often regarded as a classical play of social problems, this kind of designation restricts the understanding of the works. The theme of A Doll's House is characterized by its trans-epochal and constant nature, which reflects the dilemma of common human family ethics. The failure in belief of the main characters at the soul level caused disorder at the ethical level, such as the aphasia of communication in life between husband and wife, the absence of father's role. In order to solve the dilemma, we should correct the understanding of love and replace the desire for the love's fruit with itself; then, rebuild a spirit of contract, and repair the broken relationships.

Keywords: Ibsen; A Doll's House; family ethics; love; spirit of contract.

Harold Broome's Bilateral Interpretation of Yahweh and Shakespeare

Huang Feng

Abstract: The American literary theorist Harold Bloom's interpretation of religious texts begins with the distinction between the Yahweh in the J text and the God in the Bible. Bloom believes that "Yahweh" is a literary figure full of humanity, and "God" is a religious figure compiled by the church person on the basis of the former. Throughout Bloom's interpretation practice, the series of interpretations of "Yahweh" is not a one-way secularization, there is also an opposite sacred behavior. While disguising "Yahweh" as a literary figure, he also praised Shakespeare as the most important classic writer and made him the true core of "literary belief." The presentation of this bilateral interpretation stems from Bloom's adherence to the same interpretation strategy, and also builds our approach to the overall practice of Bloom's criticism.

Keywords: Harold Bloom; Yahweh; Shakespeare; “agonistic struggle between father and son”.

The Rise of Degree Adverb "Hen" and the Decline of Degree Adverb "Shen"

 in Modern Chinese

Tang Chuanyang

Abstract:  In the history of Chinese, both Shen and Hen are important degree adverbs indicating high degree, and there is a competition and substitution relation between the two. Before the Yuan Dynasty, the Shen was commonly used as the degree adverb. But since the middle of Qing Dynasty Hen is mainly used as the degree adverb. Through investigating the use of Hen in modern literature and combining with its distribution in modern dialects, this essay attempts to prove that the generation of the adverb of degree Hen is the result of self-semantic evolution and language contact, the spreading is from north towards south. In modern Chinese, the adverb of degree Shen only appears in written language. There are three reasons for the decline of the adverb of degree Shen. Firstly, low clarity of meaning ;Secondly, psychology of seeking new; Thirdly, the use of other adverbs of high degree such as “Hao bu”,“Hao sheng”,“Hao”,“Shi fen”,etc.
