Craftsman Paradigm and Tang Dynasty Poetic Criticism

Pan Tianbo

Abstract: In the history of poetic criticism, some terminologies and paradigms borrowed from craftsmanship have been widely used in literature criticism during Tang Dynasty, such as Tao-instrument relation, craftsman’s mind, refine and scouring, casting, carving and “the gold needle” etc. The poetics criticism of the Tang Dynasty had exposed the isomorphic principle and synergy mechanism between the practice of craftsman and poetry, and presented a new style of poetic criticism. The poetic criticism in the Tang Dynasty abandoned the old paradigms such as the "rules" and "skills" in poetic criticism since the Wei and Jin Dynasties, and created new paradigms such as "carving decoration" and "the golden needle" etc. This is obviously a poetic appearance of the liberal spirit of the Tang Dynasty's transcendental method. It highlights the poetic aesthetic pursuit of "transcending images" and "greatest skill looks natural" etc., and also reflects the realism tendency of poetic criticism in the Tang Dynasty. Behind these new poetic criticisms, we have witnessed the historical reality of the Tang Dynasty artisan culture, social development and poetic innovation movement, as well as the demonstration of the new atmosphere of the Tang Dynasty spirit, aesthetic pursuit and criticism.

Keywords: Tang Dynasty; poetic criticism; craftsman paradigm; realism.

Open Text and Dialogue Intention

The Relation and its Evolution between Postscripts and “Original Text” of Song Dynasty

Wang Xiaoli

Abstract: As a kind of sub-text, the postscripts gradually surpassed their dependence on the original works ("original texts") in the Song Dynasty and became a kind of self-contained unit with its own meaning, which is the premise for the spreading and acceptance of the postscripts as an independent style in later generations. As an open text, the call of “original texts” was the original mechanism for the generation of postscripts, and the interpretation of the meaning of the original works constituted the main function of postscripts. But with the maturity of postscripts, the author's autonomous intention of dialogue has promoted the creation of postscripts beyond the original texts. The postscripts were not only the response to the author, not only the discovery of the implied meaning of the original texts, but also the presentation of its self-meaning. The evolution of the relationship between postscripts and original texts was directly related to the strong self-consciousness of scholars in the Song Dynasty.

Keywords: Song Dynasty; postscript; “original texts”; relationship.

Zhou Zuoren’s “Hundred-Plant Garden” Narration: The Possibility of Location Biography

Ding Wen

Abstract: Zhou Zuoren wrote a series of essays about the “Hundred-Plant Garden”, which has a dialogical relationship with Dawn Blossoms Plucked at Dusk. Driven by a strong intention of dialogizing with Lu Xun, Zhou Zuoren established the role of Hundred-Plant Garden as a special place for Lu Xun’s biography writing. Location became Zhou Zuoren's particular angle in his reminiscence writing. He also reconstructed the text of Dawn Blossoms Plucked at Dusk into rooms and objects of Hundred-Plant Garden, which were the memory boxes that initially carried them. This made the texts and objects interrogate each other. The character of rooms was similar to its owners, and items stitched together a portrait of its owner. Memory becomes from words to material forms, resulting in double changes in quality and quantity.

The Narration of Upright Officials in Literature in the New Period

and the Modern Construction of National State Transition

Jin Chunping

Abstract: The narrative paradigm and the pedigree of honest officials since the new period not only inherit the value tradition of "Left-wing Literature", "Revolutionary Literature" and "Socialist Realistic Literature" initiated by modern Chinese literature, but also promote the gradual reform in the fields of social, political, economic and cultural systems in China in the past 40 years of reform and opening-up. The connotation and denotation of the image of upright officials also show the generation of types and the evolution of literature corresponding to the historical development of socialist countries, thus making the narrative of upright officials and the sequence of their characters an artistic micro-image of "Chinese stories". The fission and evolution of the narrative mode of contemporary political novels, which takes the narrative of upright officials as a typical example, not only enriches and develops the "literature of socialist countries" ideas, and in the history of narrative evolution, will complete the future imagination and ideal construction of modern nation-state.

From “Writing Youth” to “Shaping Life”: On Zhu Jing’s Novels

Li Wei

Abstract: Zhu Jing is an important young novelist in the new century. Her creation starts from the elegy of youth under the background of "old age", and then discusses the possibility of finding "perfection" in "dislocation" life, and gives rise to philosophical thinking in the narrative characterized by "contrast" and "intertextuality". It becomes Zhu Jing's unique aesthetic pursuit and creative characteristics to outline the "emotional form" bred in the current society in the seemingly "plain" narration. Zhu Jing's novels have thus become a unique existence in the current literary development process.

What did Brontë Write in India Ink?

Irish Orientalism in Jane Eyre

Wang Ping, Shi Lan

Abstract: In Victorian times, making India civilized was regarded as a great work, and in some sense, the missionary is the symbol of national and imperial identity. Women missionaries were taken as heroines and pioneers. However, Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre boldly shied away from the responsibility of being an uncomplaining wife of a Christian martyrdom and dutiful missionary in India. This is a typical representation of Irish Orientalism. The author’s contradictory attitudes towards India’s suttee offers allegorical commentary on Irish affairs, having what Thomas Moore called a “doubleness of application.” Moreover, both imperial and anti-colonial impulses at the same time in Jane Eyre are characteristic of Irish strategies and narratives. Examining Bronte’s Indian writing will help us to further explore the means by which members of an internal colony might engage public debate in the metropole about political sovereignty, modern nationalism, and the imperial project.

Keywords: Jane Eyre; suttee; women missionaries; Indian writing; Irish Orientalism.

Kazuo Ishiguro: From Immigration Literature to World Literature

Fan Xiaoqing

Abstract: Immigration writer Kazuo Ishiguro set an ambition of “international writing” at the beginning of his career. Since then, in the past 40 years, his writing has experienced two stages of internationalization and globalization, from “internationalized” immigration literature to world literature. Internationalization and globalization are the core features of Ishiguro's oeuvre, which run through three aspects: the theme, the style and the acceptance of his works. From the perspective of writing, Ishiguro once put forward the concept of “writing for Norwegians”, and his target readers are from all over the world, so the consciousness of internationalization and globalization is throughout his writing process. From the perspective of reading, only when readers view his novels in an international and global way can they truly understand their meanings, thus to avoid misunderstandings caused by excessive connection between the theme and specific historical situations.

War, Politics and Life Consciousness: Harold Pinter’s Depiction of Death in Poetry

Wang Yan

Abstract: Death is a major motif runs through in Harold Pinter’s works. Violence and wars, and political persecution, induced by human greed and cruelty, are the major culprits of death, which in Pinter’s poems are represented on the one hand by aggressive wars launched by Western hegemony and superpowers; on the other, by the rightists’ persecution of the leftists. Pinter’s works unravel philosophically the contradictory and complementary relations between death and romantic love, death and family love, as well as death and friendship. Instincts for life and survival predetermine the complicated twists and turns between death and love. Stylistically, Pinter’s death-related works epitomize most strongly such Pinteresque elements as minimalism, mystery, menace and black humor.

The Genealogy and Practical Dimension of Butler's Performative Theory

Abstract: Judith Butler's performative theory has been a key word in Western literary theory since it was published. She applied this theory to gender studies and redefined gender identity. However, domestic research on it is still at the level of sorting out and summarizing. By tracing Austin's theory of speech action and Derrida's deconstruction criticism based on the concepts of "repetition" and "supplement", this paper explores the generative basis of Butler's theory of gender representation and discusses in detail the cultural practices involved in Butler's new theoretical system of performance based on gender..

The Construction and Contemporary Expansion of Theatricality in Text Theory

Kong Degang

Abstract: Roland Barthes believes that theatre consists of practice of symbols and behavior of viewing. He put his understanding of theatricality into its own theoretical operation. In his later textual theory practice, theatricality was constructed into a philosophical way of thinking, including the materialization of time, the operation of physicality/symbol/text, and the state of viewing and being seen, creating so-called "Philosophical theatre". The expansion of the theatricality in the text theory influences performance arts in turn, and spread to contemporary social operation in the way of heterogeneous isomorphism.

The Space Aesthetics of "Screen City"

Zhang Jingwu

Abstract: Movies come into being and grow in the city. The city has a profound impact on the whole film culture and industrial system. Screen space has been actively serving the presentation of urban space. The space aesthetics of "screen city" can be summarized in three ways: "doll space" and "anti-doll space", "third space" or "fourth space", "utopian space", "dystopian space" and "heterotopian space". These three generalizations focus on three dimensions: the interactive relationship between film and city, the multiple relationships between film and reality, and the ex pression of film and social consciousness. We should actively utilize the space aesthetic laws of "screen city" to better develop the film culture industry.

Gamification of Movies and the Cinematic Nature of Games

Li Jian, Deng Xiaolin

Abstract: The interaction and influence of games and movies present different art forms and works. The adaptation of games achieves the transplantation of "mind flow experience" by taking advantage of the shooting method of action movies, the shaping of hero, protagonist and world view, and the CGI special effects. A film with "game" as the core of the narrative is essentially a game process. By virtue of the completion of "game", it provides the audience with a template of life, and stimulates the audience to think positively about life, freedom and courage through the change and improvement of their own values in the selection of characters. Films exploring the essence of games gradually transform and subverted the audience's aesthetic image and taste at a metaphysical level, guiding them toward the propositions with more ultimate significance, such as reality and fantasy, life and universe, time and space, thinking and consciousness, etc., and promoting the audience's self-awakening and self-reflection.

Keywords: movie; game; adaptation of subject; narrative mode; the nature of art.

On the Establishment of Applied Linguistics by Baudouin de Courtenay (1870)

 Qiu Xuemei and Li Baojia

Abstract: This paper asks three questions: 1) When and where did Baudouin's argument on applied linguistics appear ?  2) What is the content of Baudouin’s idea? 3) How the research scope proposed by Baudouin is identical to or distinguished from the one proposed by contemporary researchers? By tracing the study history, we got the answers to the above inquiries as following. 1) Based on the applied linguistics lectures at the Introduction to Linguistics Course delivered at the University of Petersburg between December 17 and 29 in the year of 1870, his script titled as "Некоторые о бщие замечания о языковедении и язык" was published in 1871. 2) Baudouin proposed not only the terminology of “applied linguistics”, but also argued its scope deals with language arts (teaching arts, infrastructure arts, research arts), and linguistic data application. 3) The scope of research proposed by Baudouin is basically consistent with that of contemporary scholars. The so-called "language research arts" has a corresponding relationship with machine-applied linguistics. This retrospect helps to expand our international vision and enhance our theoretical consciousness.

Keywords: Baudouin; applied linguistics; theoretical creation; research scope.

On the Patterns of Morphemization and Semantic Generating of Transliterating Loanwords

Sun Daogong

Abstract: Morphemization is an important way that loanwords integrate into Chinese vocabulary system, and it is also an significant performance of the strong vitality. Based on the 1536 transliterating loanwords, we collected them in the 10 representative neologism dictionaries. And uses the “Fensi” as the individual case, this paper analyzes the patterns and characteristics of morphemization. The conclusion is that morphemization embodies in two aspects: lexical degradation and syllable upgradation. Which pattern will be selected is restricted by Syllable quantities. Single-syllable loanwords can only choose lexical degradation, yet multisyllabic loanwords include two patterns: lexical degradation and syllable upgradation. And syllable upgradation of morphemization occupy a position of prominence in the productivity. Finally, based on the Semantic Ball theory, the semantic structure of new words after morphemization are analyzed, and two kinds of semantic generating patterns are proposed in semantic morpheme-formation.

Keywords: transliterating loanwords; morphemization; semantic ball theory; semantic generating patterns.

The Functional Differentiation of “Shi” and “Rang” in Periphrastic Causative Sentences

Li Xun, Duan Yehui

Abstract: The syntactic form of periphrastic causative sentences is generally "N1 + V1 + N2 + V2", in which V1 is generally causative markers such as “shi”, “rang”, “ling” and “jiao”. It has no actual lexical meaning, that is, it does not assume the lexicalization function of causative relations. “shi” and “rang” can be regarded as the most typical V1 in periphrastic causative sentences, which show absolute dominance distribution in the corpus. “Shi” is a simple periphrastic causative word, while “rang” is a multifunction causative word. “Rang” can express the four meanings of “periphrastic causation”, “causation”, “permission” and “passivity”, which are respectively recorded as Rang 1, Rang 2, Rang 3 and Rang 4. In periphrastic causative sentences, the functions of “shi” and “rang1” are close to each other and can be replaced in a limited conditions. Corpus shows that the substitution rate of “shi” sentence is much higher than that of “rang1”. There is a certain degree of tendentious functional differentiation between “shi” and “rang1”. It is restricted by several factors: style, event type and semantics of V1.

Keywords: periphrastic causative:“shi”;“rang”;functional differentiation.
