An In-depth Analysis on the Aesthetic Consciousness of Early Tang Poetry and Chen Zi’ang's Poetics

——Centered Around the Event Called “Long Men Ying Zhi

Yan Weizhe

Abstract: The aesthetic consciousness of Tang poetry is mainly composed of the vigorous style of Han and Wei dynasties and the flowery e x pression of Qi and Liang dynasties, which was first demonstrated in the works of the early Tang poets such as Wei Zhen and Yu Shinan. Chen Zi’ang inherited the views of Wei Zheng and others, and introduced the idea of “vigorous style with allegorical meanings” in his letter to Dongfang Qiu, in order to contend against the luxuriant Qi and Liang style. This had directly influenced Dongfang’s performance in his response to the “emperor assigned topic creation”, the so called “long men ying zhi”. The different performances of Dongfang Qiu and Song Zhiwen on this event indicated the divergence in aesthetic consciousness of the early Tang poets, which was shown in three aspects, namely, expressing idea or following emotion, antiqueness or innovating, euphemism or extravagance. This eventually has an important influence on the poetry of the glorious age of Tang Dynasty.

Keywords: Dongfang Qiu; Song Zhiwen; Long Men Ying Zhi; strength of character; poeticdiction.

The Evolution of the Literary View and Its Reasons of Shen Shanbao,

A Mater of Female Poems in the Daoguang and Xianfeng Periods

Wang Xiaoyan

Abstract: Shen Shanbao is a “host master” in the circle of noble lady poets during the Daoguang and Xianfeng Periods in the Qing Dynasty. Her literary thought presents many complicated features. On the one hand, she holds the concept of chastity, filial piety, kindness and elegance, which has the element of benefiting the social welfare; on the other hand, she always maintains a certain preference for literary e x pression that emphasizes spiritual heart, real interest and poetic feeling. By investigating her compilation of The Poems of Famous Ladies, we can see that the literary thought of spirituality is always the main line of her writing. The process of her entering the capital from Qiantang in the early stage and returning to Qiantang from the capital in the later stage was accompanied by two major changes in her thought, each of which has its emphasis, but ultimately reflected the return of spirituality literature. The study of Shen Shanbao's literary thought is an important clue to analyze the literature and its ideology of elite female literature in Beijing, Hangzhou and Shanxi areas during this period..

Inventing China with Non-fictional Writing:

The Genre’s Characteristic in Peter Hessler’s “China Trilogy”

Wu Qiong

Abstract: Peter Hessler’s “China Trilogy” emphasizes the writing about the history of ordinary people and opens the subjective historical space. Hessler has made China a diverse subject instead of an unchanged object. His writings represented the non-fictional writings’ trend in today’s China, and can also be taken as a good example to review the non-fictional writings in China. The trilogy told stories about contemporary China with different structural ways. Although history as a device itself has its unavoidable literariness, and ordinary people as inner landscape being the reversed definition, they all pointed to the fiction or invention of real China which was collaged by fragmented individuals. And the vast space and the historical reality in the space have been presented in new narratives.

Reminiscent but Unreturnable Home Country: Comment on Gefei's Novel Expecting Spring Breeze

Li Mingshen

Abstract: Gefei's novel Expecting Spring Breeze is a farewell to the countryside. In nearly half a century of looking back, the novel presents the Chinese countryside struggling to crawl under the ups and downs of history from the perspective of villagers. As the most obvious and extensive existence of Chinese society, the countryside has always been the victim of historical progress or been forgotten by the times.  Expecting Spring Breeze shattered all people's illusions about pastoral songs in the past, based on the eternal "change" of history, and illustrated the "constant" aspect of the core of Chinese villages, witnessing the gradual disappearance of villages and finally becoming the wasteland abandoned by history and the times.

Keywords: Expecting Spring Breeze; Gefei; nostalgia; Chinese countryside; historical narrative.

A Study of “Poverty” in Louise Erdrich’s Novles

Yuan Xiaoming

Abstract: A lot of poor people appear in Louise Erdrich’s novels, which constitutes a challenge to the notion of classlessness in American mainstream discourse and highlights the disadvantage of native Americans in the overall economic structure. To some degree, Erdrich also attempts to modify the stereotype of poor people through disconnecting one’s economic status and his individual character. However, when race doesn’t come in, association of one’s poverty with his family education and moral quality is emphasized, which undoubtedly reflects the mainstream’s imagination and anxiety towards the poor in this country.

The Themes of “Mechanical Replication” and “Transformation” in Ragtime

Bai Weizhen

Abstract: Ragtime is the representative work of American Jewish writer E. L. Doctorow. This novel has caused a sensation in the American literary world by its integration of fact and fiction, dissolution of the boundaries between novel and history, as well as its distinctive postmodern writing style. Therefore, the academic community interpreted this novel from perspectives of writing technique and method, thus had ignored the interpretation of its profound ideological connotation for a long time. However, “mechanical replication” and “transformation” are two main themes of this novel. By searching for the dynamic balance between them, Doctorow explore mechanical duplication’s influence on human material life and spiritual life in post-industrial era, which displays his obvious humanistic concern and profound thought on survival dilemma of post-modern human.

The Critique and Deconstruction of Post-structuralist History, Knowledge and Power in Texts:

Discussion on Theoretical Resources of the Neo-historicism in the Postmodern context

Kong Fanjuan

Abstract: The neo-historicism does not have a unified theoretical program and a fairly complete theoretical system, so it is not a rigorous theoretical school in general. The main core theorists of the neo- historicism have coincidence in their political standpoints and research objectives. They come together with the same or similar theoretical viewpoints. Therefore, the theory of neo-historicism is particularly plentiful and miscellaneous, and it also has a variety of critical perspectives and interpretation methods in the specific operation practice. The neo-historicism emerged in a knowledge context prevailing in post-modernism, encountering various kinds of post-modern theories to varying degrees of impact and influence, so the neo-historicism has drawn a wide range of theoretical resources. Among many postmodern trends of thought, the most influential one is post-structuralism (including deconstructionism), especially Foucault's thought. Concretely speaking, post-structuralist historical outlook, discourse analysis and intertextuality constitute the basis of the text interpretation theory and critical practice of the neo-historicism.

Keywords: neo-historicism; post structuralism; Foucault; discourse analysis; genealogy; intertextuality.

Experimental Analysis of Neutral Tone in Mandarin Speech Produced by

Hong Kong Cantonese Learners

Liu Lei, Gu Wentao

Abstract: This study compared Mandarin neutral tone (T0) produced by native speakers (L1 group) and Hong Kong Cantonese L2 learners (L2 group), through both perceptual experiment and acoustic analysis. The T0 syllables after four tones in three types of word contexts (i.e., isolated word, word in a broad-focus utterance, and on-focus word in a narrow-focus utterance) were investigated. The perceptual experiment showed that T0 had a lower score of naturalness in the L2 group than in the L1 group; the difference between L1 and L2 was larger in isolated words than in sentences. Acoustic analysis showed that T0 in general had longer duration, larger durational ratio, and smaller F0 difference between the two syllables in the L2 group than in the L1 group. In addition, for T0 syllables in focused words, L2 group failed to acquire the rules of F0 encoding effectively. Comparison of the perceptual and acoustic results shows that syllable duration is the most important factor contributing to the naturalness of T0 syllables produced by the L2 group. This study suggests the importance of paying attention to the context-dependent characteristics of T0 in learning Mandarin as L2.

Quantitative Calculation of Prosodic Strength in Mandarin Speech

Zhang Wei, Xie Yanlu, Zhang Jinsong

Abstract: Prosodic strength refers to the relative prominence of each syllable in continuous speech. It used to be perceptually annotated at discrete degrees, but perceptual annotation is highly subjective and cannot give continuous values that are potentially useful in speech technologies. This study proposed a method to estimate prosodic strength of each syllable in Mandarin continuous speech, using a linear combination of three acoustic measures, viz., normalized syllable duration, pitch span, and F0 deviation from tone template. The validity of the method was verified by the relationship between the acoustically estimated prosodic strength and the perceptually labeled stress index, by the relationship between prosodic strength and POS class, and by the comparison on prosodic strengths of the same words in different focal conditions.

Keywords: Prosodic strength; tone; fundamental frequency contour; syllable duration.

Discussion about the Small World of Language Networks

Xu Chao, Chen Xiaohe

Abstract: Many real-world networks have the small world property, and studies have found that many language networks are also "small worlds". Taking Zuo Zhuan and its modern Chinese version’s language networks, multiple types of language networks, and multilingual language networks as the object, and guided by linguistic theory, this article comparatively analyses the small world property of various language networks and its linguistic significance. The study found that although language networks commonly have the small world property, the mechanism behind this phenomenon is very different; different types of languages’ small world properties bears the order as isolating languages > fusional languages > agglutinating languages; the vocabulary system of Zuo Zhuan is denser than its modern Chinese version, and the small world property is stronger.

Text, Taboo and Mentality: A Reading of The Inscriptions on the Calligraphy of 15 Perfect Men

Zhang Zongyou

Abstract: The Inscriptions on the Calligraphy of 15 Perfect Men is a postscript written by Zhu Yizun in his later years. The objects are all former loyal officials of the Ming Dynasty who persisted on their integrity. The historical facts involved in the postscript show that "resistance to the Qing dynasty" was a taboo of politics among the scholastic groups in the early Qing dynasty, resulting in the tearing and antagonism between the Manchu and Han, as well as among the Han scholars themselves. The Qing court has made long-term efforts in order to bridge the gap, stabilize the ruling. As an individual, Zhu Yizun transformed himself from a civic resistant to a high rank academic official of the Qing dynasty, also experienced the painful reflection of life and choice. Zhu Yizun finally chose the academic road, applied for the position of “erudite Confucian scholar”, committed to literature writing and inheritance, and has made outstanding contributions. The Inscriptions on the Calligraphy of 15 Perfect Men has thus become a sample of interpreting Zhu Yizun's spiritual journey and reflecting the political trend and intellectual identity of the early Qing dynasty.
