A Brief Report of the 2018 Beijing World Congress of Philosophy

and the ISUD Sessions and Round Tables

1. The Congress

The 24th World Congress of Philosophy was held on August 13-20 in Beijing. The Opening ceremony was held in the Golden Hall of the People’s Great Hall, where usually be the venue of the national congresses of Chinese Communist Party, China’s People’s National Congress, and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. The main venue of 2018 WCP was the China’s National Convention Center, very close to the so called “Bird’s Nest” and the “Water Cube” where the 2008 Olympic Games were held. Some sessions were also held in the campus of Beijing University.

A plenary session in CNCC

  During the eight-day "philosophy week", more than 6,000 philosophers and philosophy enthusiasts from 121 countries and regions listened to each other and had in-depth conversations around the theme of "learning to be human" in more than 1,000 academic activities which including plenary sessions, symposia, endowed lectures, sessions of contributed papers, student sessions, society sessions, round tables, etc. The number of attendance is the highest in history. Nearly half of the participants are Chinese. More students than before have participated the congress (totally 160 student sessions).

In this Congress, the participating scholars discussed the theme of "learning to be human" from the perspectives of self, community, nature, spirit and tradition, which is not only a philosophical response to the common concerns of human society, but also an echo of the era of philosophy tradition based on humanity.

Diversity and inclusiveness are the most distinctive features of this World Congress of Philosophy. Greek, Chinese, Indian, Jewish, Christian, African and other philosophies have attracted great attention. Traditional philosophies such as metaphysics and logic, and new philosophies such as artificial intelligence, information and digital culture have all attracted the attention of scholars with different languages and colors. The whole vision of today’s world philosophy development is presented in full on this congress. Meantime, this congress is also a great chance to promote the awareness of Chinese philosophy in world philosophical circles. Actually, as mentioned by Professor Luca Scarantino, the newly elected President of FISP, in his closing ceremony address: study of Chinese philosophy in a Western philosophical institute is now become very normal, and this congress, by creating the awareness of Chinese and other philosophical traditions, may change the pattern of doing philosophy in the world.

2. The ISUD sessions

During the 2018 WCP, ISUD (International Society for Universal Dialogue) has held its society sessions and round tables. It seems that as a group member of the FISP (International Federation of Philosophical Societies), ISUD has the privilege to run some sessions during the WCP. Approved by the ex-committee of ISUD, we submitted the applications for society session and round table to the organizing committee of the 2018WCP as early as in August 2017. The theme of the society session is “Learning to be human through dialogue and conversation”, including 10 speakers, with Keqian Xu as the moderator. The theme of the roundtable is “Learning to be human in an age of crisis and uncertainty, including 10 speakers, with Jihua Hu as the moderator. After the application was accepted, we have also made some minor readjusting. The final version of the ISUD society session and round table appeared in the programme is as following:

Although due to some personal reasons, some of the speakers were not showing, they still made their contributions. Robert Allinson, the current president of ISUD has sent some important notes for the discussion. Kevin Brien’s paper was read by Prof. Hu, and Guo Jie’s paper was read by Jingzhao Liu.

Manjulika Gosh, Jihua Hu, Keqian Xu, Jingzhao Liu and Jonathan O. Chimakonam have played the role either as the chairperson or as the commentators. All the participants, include the audience have joined the discussion enthusiastically.

Prof. Hu has done a very well organization job for both the society session and the roundtable discussion. He created a Wechat group of the event to communicate among the participants. He also made a Wechat page to announcing the contents of our sessions.

3. The FISP general assembly

ISUD is one of the more than one hundred members of FISP, and has one vote in the voting of the FISP general assembly. Since Robert Allinson, the Chairman elected of ISUD, would not be able to attend the Beijing WCP due to some emergent situations, and none of the current executive committee members would be able to attend, Robert Allinson appointed Keqian Xu to delegate ISUD and attend the FISP general assembly.

The FISP general assembly

The FISP general assembly was held in the Yingjie Exchange Center in Peking University, the agenda includes the following:

l  Welcome address by the President of Fisp

l  Address by the Vice President of Peking University

l  Report of the Secretary-General

l  Report of the Treasurer

l  Discussing on some proposals from member societies (including further promoting International Philosophical Olympiad; saluting to the deceased philosophers; female philosophers’ issues; Ibero-American philosophy issues, etc.)

l  Presentation of the new website of Fisp;

l  Membership and membership due issues;

l  Revision on the Bye-Laws of FISP (deleted a paragraph from the Bye-Laws which defines a restriction of the number of the steering committee members based on country or nationality).

l  Bid for running the World Congress 2023: Four cities compete for running the WCP 2023: Melbourne of Australia, Rio de Janeiro of Brazil, Tokyo of Japan, and Teheran of Iran. All of the four cities gave excellent presentations to support their bidding. After the first round of voting, Melbourne and Rio won, but neither met the required votes. And finally Melbourne won in the second round of voting.

l  Election of the new Steering Committee and the new president of FISP. There was only one candidate for the President, who is Luca Scarantino, the current secretary general. The assembly elected him as the new president of FISP by a show of hands. There are 44 candidates for the steering committee, no number restriction. At the end of the assembly the ballot count was not completed. The result was not released. I guess all of the candidates have been elected.
