健康,确实对所有工作,对生活愉快是必要的,同样,破坏它的行为是愚昧的。

Health is, indeed, so necessary to all the duties, as well as pleasure of life, that the crime of squandering it is equal to the folly. (No.48)

 

希腊诗人说,“健康是天堂里最宝贵的力量。”

Health, most venerable of the powers of heaven!(greek poets)(No.48)

 

不管谁事先不休息不娱乐地消耗自己,他不仅要按小时偿还,而且要付出高利贷。

Whoever takes up life beforehand, by depriving himself of rest and refreshment, must not only pay back the hours, but pay them back with usury.(No.48)

 

人们应不要完全忽视自己的记忆力,而应尽力去记住自己的美德,因为没有其他的名誉,能把美德的愉快带给天堂。

Man should be taught not to be wholly careless about their memory, but to endeavor that they may be remembered chiefly for their virtues, since no other reputation will be able to transmit any pleasure beyond the grave.(No.49)

 

人年轻时,想到有一天会老;人老时,请记住,自己曾经年轻过。

When he is young, consider that he shall one day be old; and remember, when he is old, that he has once been young. (No 50)

Native deformity cannot be rectified, a dead friend cannot return, and the hours of youth trifled away in folly, or lost in sickness, cannot be restored.(No.52)

 

在人类不幸生活中,几乎没有比贫穷更为可怕的事情了。

There is scarcely, among the evils of human life, any so generally dreaded as poverty.(No.53)

 

富有,权威和荣耀都会失去它们的影响力,因为富有明天会被另一个人占有,权威今晚就要永远失效,荣耀不论它如何具有价值或真实,很快就再也没人去关心。

Riches, authority, and praise, lose all their influence when they are considered as riches which to-morrow shall be bestowed upon another, authority which shall this night expire for ever, and praise which, however merited, or however sincere, shall, after a few moments, be heard no more.(No.54)

A powerful argument which is seldom used to a woman without effect.(No.55)

 

让美德一边单独对抗恐惧,另一边抵制愉快,这是很困难的。

It is difficult for virtue to stand alone against fear on one side, and pleasure on the other.(No.55)

 

找到没有故意作恶的冒犯者;把痛苦给予那些没有任何挑衅罪恶的人,没有什么比发现这些更不愉快的事了。

Nothing is more unpleasing than to find that offence has been received when none was intended, and that pain has been given to those who were not guilty of any provocation.(No.56)

 

“节俭”可以看作女儿的审慎,姐妹的温和,父母的特权。

Frugality may be termed the daughter of prudence, the sister of temperance, and the parent of liberty. (No.57)

That error cannot justly be reproached, which reason could not obviate, nor prudence avoid.(No.63)

 

友谊包括尊重和爱好,一个来自温情,另一个来自持久。

Friendship, compounded of esteem and love, derives from one its tenderness, and its permanence from the other.(No.64)

 

友谊只有平等才能长久。

罪恶与美德容易区分。按照哈林顿的格言,压抑,只有那些看不见东西的人,才能感觉到。“人虽不能眼见,却能感觉。”

Vice and virtue are easily distinguished. Oppression, according to Harrington’s aphorism, will be felt by those that cannot see it.(No.68) or “the people cannot see, but they can feel”.

 

要见证任何人最为可信的个性,只有那些在家庭里认识他的人,因为在家里,能见到他的无拘无束,自然的行为举止,如同他自愿地把自己的一切表现出来。

The most authentick witnesses of any man’s character are those who know him in his own family, and see him without any restraint, or rule of conduct, but such as he voluntarily prescribes to himself.(No.68)

 

老年最需要的支持是财富。

The most usual support of old age is wealth.(No.69)

 

年轻人初入世道,充满希望,追求热情,没有什么比冷酷的警告,冷淡的期待,谨慎的不自信,这些经验和失望必定灌输给他们的东西,更令他们讨厌的了。

To a young man entering the world, with fullness of hope, and ardor of persuit, nothing is so unpleasing as the cold caution, the faint expectation, the scrupulous diffidence which experience and disappointments certainly infuse.(No.69)

 

没人能说服他,陷井就在他前面,除非他陷入困境。

Not one can be convinced that snares are laid for him, till he finds himself entangled.(No.69)

 

每一代人总是蔑视和赞叹另一代人。老一代和新一代的概念,如同不同重量和成分的液体,无法混合在一起。

Thus one generation is always the scorn and wonder of the other, and the notions of the old and young are like liquors of different gravity and texture which never can unite.(No.69)

 

所有能期待的安慰,一定来自于回想过去,或借用未来。

All the comfort that can now be expected must be recalled from the past, or borrow from the future.(No.69)( the Rambler III)

 

短时间接触或稍微一观察就对一个人作出判断,没有什么比这更不公平的事了。

Nothing therefore is more unjust than to judge of man by too short an acquaintance, and too slight inspection.(No.70)

 

期待的快乐,经常比得到的快乐要大得多,每个希望若完全实现,会让人感到失望。

For the pleasure of expecting enjoyment, is often greater than that of obtaining it, and the completion of almost every wish is found a disappointment.(No.71)
