21 Siaya: A Fatherj’s Home

It’s not just God we praise, but Obama too. ------Elderly Kenyan Women chanting to Obama

This was Obama’s third trip to see his father’s family. He had first visited just after college and then again after finishing Harvard Law School. The family farm was near a town called Kolego in the Siaya district of Nyanza province. Siaya was home to various small faming and trading villages. Most of the people who lived there were poor, with more than half living on less than a dollar a day. The district’s largest city was Kisumu. Almost all the people in the area were from the Luo tribe.

On his earlier visits, Obama had gotten on a train in Nairobi and ridden it through the night and the morning to Kisumu. When he arrived, he had walked half a mile to a bus station by himself and had been greeted by a handful of relatives. Obama talked about the difference to reporters. “The last time I arrived in my grandmother’s village, there was a goat in my lap and some chickens,” he said. This time he arrived into Kisumu afte a forty-minute plane ride.

When Obama’s flight landed, a mass of people seemed to appear out of thin air. The enthusiastic crowd turned out to be mostly Peace Corps workers from the United States. Obama was loaded into an SUV and driven to the New Nyanza Provincial General Hospital, where he and Michelle were to take their AIDS test. It was Saturday, and along the sides of there roads were markets selling everything from fruit to American T-shirts to Air Jordan basketball shoes. Every Kisumu street was lined with waving, hollering, and overjoyed people, hoping to catch a glimpse of Obama.

At the hospital, thousands had turned out to see Obama. People stood on rooftops of the hospital buildings, sat along balconies and climbed into trees. Some wore T-shirts bearing Obama’s name or image. Others held up pictures of him or waved flags with his name or face.

Obama and Michelle headed for mobile clinic and disappeared inside to thunderous applause. After the husband and wife got their fingertips pricked to draw small samples of blood, Obama stepped outside to speak. He took a microphone in his left hand and help up his right arm to ask for quiet. But the mass of people drowned him out and began to push forward. Obama urged calm. “Stop pushing, no pushing,” he implored. But no one paid attention. Obama sat down on the top step. “This is …” he said, pausing to find just the right word. “This is interesting.”
