In his first year at Punahou, when he was ten, Obama got an unexpected Christmas gift: a visit from his father. Those weeks were the only time that Barry spent with his father while he was old enough to remember him. Barry learned that his father had remarried and that he had five half brothers and one half sisiter living in Kenya.

Obama remembered only a few particular things about his father's visit. He was impressed by the way his father could catch the attention of everyone in a room simply by walking in, speaking in his confident manner, moving gracefully. But he remembered another moment as well: an argument that broke out between his father on one side and his mother and grandmother on the other when his father tried to stop Barry from watching a holiday cartoon, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. His father believed the boy had been watching too much TV and not studying enough.

Barry was beginning to realize some hard truths---that his parents' marriage had failed and that his father had abandoned his responsibilities to the family. He was beginning to doubt the stories he had been told by his mother about his father's greatness.

"My father's absence in my life, it was just so complicated," Obama explained in an interview. "He went from being a goat herder in a small village in Africa to getting a scholarship to he University of Hawaii to going to Harvard. But he was somebody who never really achieved his potential... He was a brilliant guy, but in so many ways, his life was a mess."

By the time Barry reached high school, Ann had separated from Lolo and returned to Hawaii with Maya. The family lived in a small apartment just a few blocks from Punahou. "Hawaii was heaven for a kid and ...I was sort of goof-off," Obama admitted. His days were filled with hanging out at the beach, bodysurfing on the rolling Pacific waves, and playing sports, especially basketball--lots of basketball. For Obama, Julius Erving, better known as Doctor J, was a hero--a gentlemanly, smart, and thoughtful African--American sports figure. Doctor J's dunks were wondrous to the eye. He seemed to fly through the air, effortlessly pinwheeling the basketball and slamming it into the hoop.
