I know that she was the kindest, most generous spirit I have ever known, and that what is best in me I owe to her.

------Barack Obama about his mother, Ann Dunham

Brack Obama's first book, Dreams from My Father, begins with the story of a telephone call form a relative in Kenya who told Obama, then twenty-one years old, that his father had been killed in a car accident. He was shocked by the call and didn't know how to feel, mostly becouse his father had left Obama's family when Obama was a toddler. Obama often told colse friends that he grew up feeling "like an orphan".

Separated form his father, Obama was strongly influenced by his mother. "I mean, she was just a very sweet person," he said. "She just loved their kids to death. And you know, [she] was one of these parents who... was the opposite of remote, was always very present and would be your biggest cheerleader and your best friend and had sort of complete confidence in the fact that you were special in some fashion."He once told a women's group:"Everything that is good about me, I think I got form her." In a preface to Dreams from My Father, Obama wrote, " I know that she was the kindest, most generous spirit I have ever know, and that what is best in me I owe to her."

Obama's mother's full name was Stanley Ann Dunham because her father had wanted a boy, but she led her life as "Ann." She was the only child of a couple originally from Wichita, Kansas. Her father, a furniture salesman, moved his family throughout Ann's childhood--form Kansas to Berkeley, California; then back to Kansas; then through some small Texas towns; then to Seattle for Ann's high school years. After Ann graduated from high school her father accepted a job in Hawaii and took his family to their final home, the city of Honolulu.
