原创英汉双语小说:《创业之路——东山再起》{75}

‘I think you are going to see your former girlfriend, aren’t you? Don’t make an excuse.’ She suddenly interposes such a serious issue which is unprepared for Jack.

‘What a question! Don’t woolgather. I just talked with her about business last evening. You needn’t be jealous. I did nothing faithless. I have to go now otherwise I may be late. Take care of you, baby. See you.’ He goes away without saying more.

The American delegation is accommodated in the sixth floor of the hotel. Mr. Henry is in Room 608. Jack knocks on the door and comes in after having heard the invitation.

‘Hello, Mr. Jack, we meet again.’ Mr. Henry greets Jack forwardly.

‘Good afternoon, Mr. Henry. What can I do for you?’ Jack comes to the point straight. He knows that Mr. Henry may talk about business with him because of his overture.

‘Please take a seat. I’d like to listen to you about your proposing of joint venture. What do you like to drink, tea or coffee?’

‘Tea, please, thank you, Mr. Henry. What do you want to know from me?’ Jack doesn’t really know what to start with.

‘I intend to ask you some questions which may make the talking easy to go on.’ Mr. Henry is creditably master-hand of talking. He penetrates Jack’s difficulty.

‘Please go ahead.’

‘Firstly, I wonder if we can hold over 50 percent of the equity of the joint venture.’ It is the American’s major question which is difficult for Jack to answer because he doesn’t know the government’s cards.

‘I am sorry I don’t know. As you know, I am not the representative of the government. Generally speaking, the Chinese side intends to hold the company. But there is something exceptional. It depends on the negotiation. I reckon the local government doesn’t have a definite idea about the joint venture because they knew that you didn’t like the idea. They may be unprepared if you suddenly interpose the solution. I think you have fifty percent of odds-on to reach your destination. I believe you are an expert at negotiation. It will be as easy as nothing for you to get.’

‘Thank you for your flattering. The second issue is that how big do is the joint venture proper to start with?’

‘It also depends on. But at least the registered capital should be fifty million otherwise the joint venture’s strength won’t be remarkable. The company may be downgrade. In that case, the bank may be unwilling to lend money to the joint venture.’ Jack’s reply sounds like an expert.

‘Yes, I think so. Thank you for your overture. The last question is that how much you want if we decide to reward you because of your contribution to our company.’

‘Are you joking, Mr. Henry?’ Jack apparently is puzzled at the question. It is really unexpected.

‘No, I am not. I am serious, Jack. May I call you Jack? It sounds intimate. I appreciate you, lad.’ Henry says seriously. His countenance proves it.

‘Thank you for your generosity, Mr. Henry. But I will refuse the reward because I don’t think it is proper for me to accept the reward. The reason is very simple. The city is my hometown. I have been reared with the local climate. It is my obligation to do something for my hometown. I think my overture is a win-win idea.’

‘I am touched by you, Jack. I think you’re as aboveboard as the sun. I admire you, lad. Then you’ll really refuse the reward from us? It may be one hundred thousand. I suggest you rethink over it.’
