 Chapter Three

‘Come on, boy. The sun is looking at your hips. It’s time to get up.’ Molly says chuckling.

‘I am sorry I wake up so late. I don’t remember what happened last night. I guess I was drunk. Thank you for taking me back. Is this your house?’

‘Yes, do you like it?’

‘More than that, I love it. By comparison my home is like a kennel and yours is the paradise.’

‘Then you keep enjoying the paradise. The breakfast is ready. Come down, let’s have it together.’

‘Thanks a lot. I won’t be long.’

‘I wait for you in the dinning room. Take it easy. We have much time.’

‘Now, let’s talk about your English, boy. As a matter of fact, nobody can learn oral English in a short term, say one week. But we can, by concentration on something important, get it. Do you know what the interviewers often ask you?’ Molly begins her teaching.

‘Yes, of course. But I failed to express it in English.’ Jack is not confident.

‘It is what I want to say. Now that you know the cards in their hand why don’t you make use of it?’

‘You meant that I recite the answers as an emphasis? Wonderful! You wake up the dreamer with one word.’

‘Good. I think you’re a shapeable made man indeed. Then I’d like you to remember the answers by heart within a week. Next Monday you will take an interview of a foreign-own company named GE.’

‘Really?’ He opens his eyes wider.

‘From now on you live here. I am sure you know the room. I will check the result of your exertion in the evening. Now I go to work. Your lunch is in the kitchen. Good-bye, boy. Wish you be lucky.’

Molly is at work. The house is quiet. Jack takes the chance to look at the house. He dares not to do so when Molly is in. After all it is her privacy. It is a large house, at least, over two hundred square meters. There are two bedrooms upstairs, each with its own washroom. It has nothing to visit over there except that.

A big living room is on the first floor, with a corridor toward the gate. A bar-stand at the end of the living room, behind the stand it is a dining-room, in which there is a door to the kitchen. A simple washroom is at the other corner.

There is a little furniture in the living room. A huge LCD TV set on the wall. A set of comfortable sofa is opposite to the TV. The floor is decorated with carpet which is woolen and as soft as sponge. Jack prefers to be barefoot on it.

A computer desk is next to the bar-stand. It is the temporary workplace of Jack. He works in the morning and in the afternoon. He has a short nap after lunch. He feels as if he comes back to his age of the middle school student when he learned at ease.

Recalling his experiences to take the interview Jack begins to summarize the rules to pass the interview. He finds the questions usually are the following:

1 Self-introduction

2 What is the least favorite course of your in the college? Why?

3 What is your biggest shortcoming?

4 Do you think you’re a good student in the college?

5 Talking about your family

6 What’s your point of view on the sector and technological development trend?

7 What do you think you still lack to fill the job?

8 How much do you expect to have?

9 What can you bring to the company?

The first question seems easy to answer. It is but a brief self-introduction. With second thought you may realize it’s not as easy as ABC. The interviewers’ time is precious and expensive. They won’t waste it listening to the interviewees’ twaddle.

Considering about it, Jack makes his answer as follows:

I am Jack, aged 24, majored mechanics from Shenyang University. I love my major very much and spent a lot time to research it deeply. As Your Monsignors’ time is precious, I am here going to mention what I learned in the spare time in the college. In the fourth year of it I went to a motor factory to practice where I put my emphasis on the motors used in generator. As we know, China is developing country that needs more and more energy. Unfortunately, the country’s fossil oil resources are not adequate. Of course, the country’s coal reserves are large, but it causes the result to pollute the environment. The solution is unmistakable, that is, the electricity which is clean and economical. Realizing this, I paid more attention to the generator market in China. I found there is a huge market space in this country. I think new energy policy will be made by the government. Combining with the country’s policy to develop the western region, I predict there will be an enormous market share of generators driven by wind. As for my expertise I don’t think it is my most important strength to design. So at outset I was poised to be a salesman. Because of this I read more about marketing and practiced in an electronic shop during holidays. I think I am suitable to fill the job of marketing or technological administration. I am from countryside. As your Monsignors know that most students from countryside are able to bear hardship and hard work and eager to stand out. I am not exceptional. My character is to get rid of any obstacle in my way to advance and take courage moving on and on.

The above address has 281 words which need nearly three minutes to recite. I will spend a week reciting seven of them. Jack thinks.

In the evening, Molly comes back early.

She says in Japanese.

‘Why? You speak Japanese?’ Jack asks.

‘Yah. Do you know Japanese?’

‘No, I don’t. What did you mean by --?’

It means I am back. You should answer with おかえりwhich means welcome you back.’

‘Ok, I remember. Now let’s repeat it again.’

‘Good! You’re clever enough. Look, this is your reward, boy?’ She smiles.

‘Oh, marvelous, I like Mcdonald’s food very much. How do you know I like it? Thank you, belle.’

‘How is your job? Let me look at it before you have the dinner, will you?’

‘Listen to me now. I am sure you’ll be pleased with me, belle.’

Jack recites the address fluently, which sounds perfect.

‘Wonderful! You really own a good memory. But your pronunciation is a bit Chinese. Your voice needs improving, too. Now I teach you how to breathe with the belly rather than throat. You may improve your voice in this way.’

‘Thank you beforehand. I’d like to learn it,’ he is very grateful.

‘First let you tongue out of your mouth as much as you can. Let your tongue hang freely, that is, never try to control it. Relax the muscle of your mouth. Keep the action as long as you can. Then let the air go through your throat. The air will vibrate your vocal cords to produce a ringing voice.

What’s more, you must practice the abdominal like this. Keep your mouth open like the above way, try to inhale and exhale with your belly up and down. Keep the action as long as you can. At beginning you may do it several dozens. By and by you may do it several hundred at a sitting. Do the above exercise every day, half an hour to one half each time. You may speak English in a perfect accent three months later.’

On Sunday evening, Jack passes the rehearse interview from the simulative interviewer Molly.

‘You’re praiseworthy, boy. Meanwhile your oral English has been improved. I dare say you will be able to pass the interview tomorrow. Please accept my congratulation ahead of schedule. It is early now. Let’s out to celebrate it by drinking.’ Molly’s mood is as high as the sky at the moment.

‘Obeying is better than respecting. I listen to you, belle. But I dare not drink more because I am afraid I will be late tomorrow morning. I cherish the chance very much. I must pluck the laurel this time. But for your help I won’t have such a confidence. At the moment, there are thousands of words in my mind.’

‘You’d better let them converge as one sentence.’ Molly says jokingly before Jack finishes his speaking. ‘By the way, let’s have Western-style food this evening.’

‘It must be very expensive, I guess. I never have that. I don’t know how to use the tableware. I am afraid I’ll lose face. Let’s go to food-stall, will you?’

‘You will have a post in a foreign-own company. You should learn how to have Western-style food.’

‘All-right, you say the last word.’

In the evening they take their seats in a brilliant Western-style restaurant named Red Mill where Molly meets some acquaintances. The expressions of their eyes are intimate and reverent. Jack’s curiosity is kindled. He contrives in private to discover the mystery.

‘Cheers, boy, let’s toast.’ Molly hoists her glass.

‘Thank you, belle teacher,’ Jack makes a face. ‘I don’t even how to use these forks and knives. By the way, can I drink the water in the bowl, I am a little thirsty.’

‘No, you can’t. It is for washing hands. I tell you a secret to avoid losing face. When you don’t know how to perform, you’d better observe what others do and then imitate them as exactly as you can.’

‘Yes, it is a good idea, thanks. But I prefer to be instructed by you now, madam. Would you please tell me how to use these forks and knives?’
