Journalism is a popular industry for college graduates. It lets them use their writing skills, it lets them travel and talk to interesting people, and it gives them a lot of independence (not to mention the chance to write a book or two in the future). On the other hand, the industry is going into a decline, and many journalists have to spend a lot of their time reporting what people want to hear rather than the truth.

If you’re considering journalism as a career, the most basic skills to start developing are your writing and your question-asking. For the first one, you should be writing every day. It doesn’t have to be journalistic writing, but it should be formal, in the sense that you are paying attention to the writing itself, and editing it. Write short stories, write your observations, write blog posts, but make sure that you are pushing your abilities (in other words, pay attention to style and word choice; don’t just write the first thing that comes to mind unless you plan on editing it later).

Question-asking seems like an easy skill, but in fact it’s a very difficult one. Journalists have to get information from people who are otherwise not sharing it, so you have to know how to make people feel comfortable and trusting enough to tell that information to you. It is hard to ask someone a question for which there is no good answer, and even harder to get them to answer it. To practice this skill, you will have to start being a journalist. Start talking to people within your community, or even your family. Make it informal at first. You can get a sense of what’s important, what they think about certain issues, etc. Then choose a topic. Pick something easy and agreeable, something that people will easily share their opinion on, like what kind of traveling people want to do, or what your fellow classmates want to study in university. Once you’ve chosen a topic, interview some people you know with some specific questions in mind. Once you feel comfortable, interview some strangers. As you become more comfortable, you can experiment with different topics. Obviously, write down everything, and try to write articles based on the information you collect. You don’t have to publish them anywhere, but just doing the writing will give you practice. If you’re having trouble figuring out how to write an article, read articles in published newspapers and magazines. Study their structure, and try to replicate it.

There are many resources on the internet to help aspiring journalists. Just start searching for things like “how to write in journalism style” or “how to be a journalist”.
