Thinking about Professions (2/2)

While stressing about your future career is not a great idea, especially before you even go to university, it is never too early to start exploring potential options. Because you don’t actually have to choose a profession, you have the freedom to experiment. We’ve talked about the importance of extracurriculars before, but this time I wanted to relate them to your future profession. One important use of your extracurricular time, both before college and in college, is to expose yourself to different non-academic activities, such as different types of work.

The first step is, as always, to ask yourself what you’re interested in. The list may be short or long, but choose one profession or field that might be interesting to you. Obviously, as a high school student, you’re probably not going to find a full time employment in this profession, but that shouldn’t stop you from learning as much about it as you can.

Researching professional fields can be accomplished in a number of ways, and in later blog posts we’ll talk about what you can do for specific interests, but here are some potential general steps. First, if you’re considering a field that is taught in schools, whether graduate or undergraduate, reach out to some professors. Find professors whose work is related to your interest, and (whether by calling their office or sending them an e-mail) ask them some questions about their work, or even about why they enjoy that topic.

Next, try to find someone who works in your profession of interest. Ask your family and friends if they know someone in that field, and try to get in touch with that person. Ask them about a typically day at work, what makes the job exciting, and also what sort of difficulties they encounter.

Finally, after learning about the profession, the next step is to try to take some kind of concrete action. Just because you can’t properly work does not mean that you can’t take some small steps. If you have an interest in finance, start trading fake stocks. If you have an interest in journalism, start writing articles. If you have an interest in helping the world, start volunteering. There is always something you can do to get a taste of what a future profession is like.
