61 Calling a Stag a Horse

Zhao Gao was the eunuch head in the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC). When Qinshihuangdied, Zhao Gao went on to serve his son, the second emperor, and soon he was appointed as the prime minister. He intended to usurp the throne, but was afraid of others’ objection, so he tried to sound them out on his intention.

One day, he offered a stag to the emperor.

“Your Majesty, here is a fine horse I present to you,” pointing to the stag, he said.

The emperor took a look at the stag and said with a smile, “My prime minister, you’ve made a mistake. Obviously, it’s a stag! How can you call it a horse?”

Then Zhao Gao turned to other officials and asked them whether it was a horse. Scared by Zhao Gao, some kept silent, some followed his words to flatter him and of course there stood some honest officials who told the truth: it was a stag. Later, Zhao Gao managed to have those who disagreed with him killed by tricks. From then on, the officials became more scared of him.

This idiom means: to distort facts deliberately.

Note:

Qin Shihuang: the first Emperor of the Qin Dynasty, named Ying Zheng(259-210 BC), who unified China for the first time in history.
