smash vt.& vi 打碎;捣烂 The cup fell and smashed.(杯子落下来摔碎了。)

grab  vt. & vi.抢先,抢占,抓住

 

1、The expensive shops in a famous arcade near Piccadilly were just opening.

2、At this time of the morning, the arcade was almost empty.

3、Mr. Taylor, the owner of a jewellery shop was admiring a new window display.

4、Two of his assistants had been working busily since eight o'clock and had only just finished.

5、Diamond necklaces and rings had been beautifully arranged on a background of black velvet.

6、After gazing at the display for several minutes, Mr. Taylor went back into his shop.
   

7、The silence was suddenly broken when a large car, with its headlights on and its horn blaring, roared down the arcade.【宁静突然被打破,一辆大轿车亮着前灯,响着喇叭,呼啸着冲进了拱廊街】

horn n.喇叭

blare vt.& vi. (喇叭或其他高音器具)刺耳地大声响起

roar /rɔ:/

vi.咆哮,怒吼

Who dares to answer back when he roars like a lion? 当他像狮子般咆哮时,谁敢和他顶嘴?

vt. 大声地喊出

He roared that  was a violation of the rules.他大声地说,那是违反规则的。

n 吼叫声,咆哮声;呼啸声

She was frightened by the roars of a lion.她被狮子的吼叫声吓呆了。

  

8、It came to a stop outside the jeweller's.

9、One man stayed at the wheel while two others with black stocking over their faces jumped out and smashed the window of the shop with iron bars.

10、While this was going on, Mr. Taylor was upstairs.

11、He and his staff began throwing furniture out of the window.

12、Chairs and tables went flying into the arcade. One of the thieves was struck by a heavy statue, but he was too busy helping himself to diamonds to notice any pain.【其中一个窃贼被一尊很重的雕像击中,可是他忙着抢钻石首饰,竟连疼痛都顾不上。】

 

13、The raid was all over in three minutes, for the men scrambled back into the car and it moved off at a fantastic speed.【抢劫只持续了3分钟,因为窃贼争先恐后地爬上轿车,以惊人的速度开跑了。】

14、Just as it was leaving, Mr. Taylor rushed out and ran after it throwing ashtrays and vases, but it was impossible to stop the thieves.

ashtray [ˈæʃtrei] n. 烟灰缸

vase [vɑ:z] n. 装饰瓶;花瓶

 

15、They had got away with thousands of pounds worth of diamonds.【他们带着价值数千镑的首饰逃之夭夭了。】

在这句话里, worth是名词

再看下面例子:

 worth n. 2000 worth of equipment 价值2000美元的设备

       worth用做adj时,这句话能改为:They had got away with diamonds worth thousands of pounds.
