“THE VILLAGE OF TANG SHI IS THE POETIC LINES IN TANG POEMS OF TRUE FEELINGS”

—A comment on the bilingual (Chinese-English) book “THE LIGHT OF ANTS” of Tang Si (the original name is Tang Derong), a distinguished poet in contemporary Chinese.

I took as a title for this comment one line from a poem “The Village of Tang Shi” because it reflects his intention to find those true feelings which ignite the hearts of other people. Poetry is a very specific and delicate matter. Many modern poets pretend to be superintellectuals but often they do not reach their goals because poetry lives first of all inside hearts!. Poetry is akin to truth. It must be simple and significant, full of true feelings.

Poetry and beauty are spread around the world. The goal of a talented poet is to find a “golden cross-section” of beauty and transform these perfect natural proportions into proper words which are able to light the fire of passionate feelings! Genuine art cannot be divided from life.

I was full of such toughts reading the book of Tang Shi “THE LIGHT OF ANTS”. I like his dream to build a unique poetical village of a true feelings, to melt into a natural background becoming an invisible part of Nature, “always sitting happily on the soaring clouds”. He wants to penetrate inside of this world and to find the secrets of beauty. He wants to find those threads connecting previous and present generations, to understand relations between alive and lifeless, to find an essential place in contemporary life and to bring his experience to other people.

He assimilates the world like a unique conglomerate, a specific ecosystem where life of human beings is connected with plants, animals and insects. In his whimsical imagination the ants become wise and creative creatures like people, and his “grandfather after his death has turned into the King of ants (“Perhaps It Is a Parable”)”.

Tang Shi feels life by heart, not by mind. For him the rural land is not simply a landscape but an animated creature. In “The Dark Night Meeting the Early Plum Blossom”he writes:

“It is snowing heavily in the village beyond,

In the snow I touched a plum blossom in the dark…

The early-open plum blossom must be relevant to my blood type,

Must be similar to my character…

I will identify plum blossoms as my sisters”

Look at these emotional lines from his poem “When Paddies are Harvested”:

“One paddy after another falls down in his bosom,

The soil eventually feels a sharp pain in his heart…

I know when paddies are harvested,

I have become the enemy of the soil,

And I am seized with a strong emotion”.

You may evaluate how colorful a metaphor is describing the feeling of a dry mouth yearning for ice water (“The Water Ice Is a Weak Girl”):

“The water ice is a weak girl.

How can she withstand rapacious sucking?

The scalding mouth has kissed her into tears,

The does not resist and she is unable to resist”.

Even The cane chair opens its arms after separation of a night  To hug me softly in the office”!(“Office Day”)

He describes some kind of comforting sadness of human life using pale colors touching your heart (“Leaves Dancing in the Wind”):

“Golden leaves dancing in the wind like a person who

Through winds and frosts in human life makes me

Fly easily over tribulations and desolations in human life”.

I might continue these examples of high poetry and true feelings endlessly, but it’s far better to read this book. I hope that you’ll find in the poetical village of Tang Shi so many positive colors of life and a striking mystery of relationships between human beings and Nature… Tang Shi is a poet with deep true feelings. Through his passionate imagination he gives new file and dimention to poetry of contemporary Chinese. In his poem “I Chase Myself Stealthily in the Dream” he writes:

“Wading across the river of torrential words, walking

Over the mountain of precipitous expression

I chase myself stealthily in the dream”.

I invite you to visit the poetical village of Tang Shi. I think you’ll obtain pleasure reading his book as I did.
