Hey friends!

Thanks for all of your comments. You have a lot of great questions, and I hope I can help answer some of them. Today, I’d like to discuss a very popular question for those going to study in the U.S.:  as a student should I apply for an F1 “student” visa, a J1 “exchange visitor” visa, or a B2 “tourist” visa? Most students going for full-time study will travel on an F1 visa. But in some situations, a different category is better. Let’s talk about how each category differs:

F1 “Student” Visa
F1 visas are issued to most qualified students enrolled in a full-time student program, including primary school, middle school, high school, college, or university (undergraduate and graduate level). Before you apply for the visa, you should first apply to the school in the United States.  As part of the acceptance process, they will send you an I-20 form that lists your enrollment dates, field of study, required level of English, total cost of education, etc. With the I-20 form, you can then apply for your F1 visa online, pay the application fee, and schedule an appointment. You should prepare for the interview by thinking through your academic plan and gathering the I-20 form, proof that you can pay your education expenses, and proof of English preparation (like a TOEFL or IELTS test).

J1 “Exchange Visitor” Visa
J1 visas are issued to qualified participants in Exchange Visitor Program (EVP). The Exchange Visitor Program fosters global understanding through educational and cultural exchanges.  All exchange visitors are expected to return to their home country upon completion of their program in order to share their exchange experiences.  This visa category includes au pairs, interns, professors, research scholars, Summer Work and Travel students, and others.  It also includes some types of full-time students.  This includes students ages 15-18.5 attending a U.S. high school for up to 1 year and college students whose educational expenses are paid “substantially” by outside sources, like through scholarships or grants. In every EVP category, your organization will need to apply on your behalf for a SEVIS number and send you a DS-2019 form. This form indicates the organization inviting you, your exchange visitor category, and your enrollment dates. Most of our J1 applicants are research scholars invited by U.S. universities or research institutes.  To read more about J1 visas, please see our J1 visa website.

B2 “Tourist” Visa
Finally, B2 visas are issued to students traveling as tourists but also involved in a short course of study. Often, it’s a short workshop about history, language, government, business, etc. The course can’t be more than 18 hours/week, and students cannot receive academic credit. Most students traveling on a B2 visa are going for winter and summer educational camps.

If you get confused, just remember to look at the form your organization sends you. If it is an I-20, you should apply for an F1 visa. If it’s a DS-2019, you should apply for a J1 visa. If they just give you an invitation letter recommending B2, you can use that. Ultimately the visa officer will determine the correct visa class and may ask you to request a different form from your organization.

I hope this helps explain the different types of student visas. Thanks for your great questions, and keep reading Qianzheng Laowang for more U.S. visa tips!
