Chongqing  vs. Chengdu(2009-09-22 15:49:13)
There have been and will continue to be the inevitable comparisons between Chengdu and Chongqing, i.e.; Who has the most pollution? Who has the most beautiful girls? Who has the hottest Hot Pot? etc. The comparisons are never ending. However, there are a few more reasons Chengdu may be outpacing Chongqing in economic development and the thinking of the responsible government administrators.
MNC(multi-national corporates) or local companies are examining several things before establishing or relocating offices in the western region of China.
Climate: CQ is a furnace in the summer and freezer in the winter.
International Flights: Chengdu plans to expand more direct international flights to 3 airports including 1 hub airport and 2 branch airports by 2012. While Chongqing has to face with the pause of the direct international flights set up one year ago.
Industry: Chengdu has focused on attracting clean hi-tech industries and neighborhood redevelopment. But Chongqing, when can you stop ONLY announcing we are MOTOR Hometown?
Tourism: Chongqing has a potential to be a hub for tourism but the potential has never been relized. Tourists don't stay in Chongqing for long. They just regard CQ as a place to board vessels to Three Gorges without knowing any surrounding attractions.
......The list could go on with aboudant statistics and facts. No doubt, Chengdu is regarded more foreigner-friendly and progressive.
Why? Why Chongqing is backword and passed by people and enterprises as well as business?
Answer: the thinking of CQ government administrator is short-term, narrow and unprofessional. They think "local" rather than "global", they see "short-term" rather than "long-term", they refuse to market or promote Chongqing and its attractions overseas.
However, there is hope.
As Party Secretary Bo Xilai arrives in Chongqing, the clean-up of underground culture of corruption is going on. Thousands are arrested. Corrupt and inefficient government officers who believed that they were untouchable are now behind walls. Organized crime lost their leadership! When Chengdu officers are asked "Do your think something similar will happen in Chengdu?" The answer is "No. Chongqing (the corrup goverment officials) went too far. Beijing does not allow this."
Finally, as a Chongqing native, I wish my hometown every success in the fight against the cancer of corruption and going foward constantly.
