Anything under the influence of caissa.
Ding Liren (2458) won the Chinese Chess Championship 2009 that took place in the city of Xinghua Jiangsu. It was a very interesting event, with many surprising results and unexpected photo finish.

The top seeded GM Ni Hua started unconvincingly with 2,5/6. Similar was the story of the second seeded GM Bu Xiangzhi, who got a series of draw to achieve only 3,5/6. Both were surprised by the strong opposition lower rated players gave during the first rounds. Among them, was the future champion, who managed to get away with 1,5 points from the two matches against the favorites.

This distraction was wisely used by GM Wang Hao. Despite the first round draw against GM Zhang Pengxiang, Wang Hao achieved 7 consecutive victories. At that point, the chasing pack was two points behind him, with the final victory at sight. An 8th round draw against GM Bu Xiangzhi and a protocol victory against the lowest rated Ji Dan, left Wang Hao 1,5 points ahead and with a very good tiebreak, just 2 rounds before the end.

Right at that point the unthinkable happened. Ding Liren, who had a very stable tournament until that point and was one of the chasing pack players, managed to defeat Wang Hao in their direct match. It was quite strange to see a player only half a point away from Wang Hao, who has comfortably led the whole tournament, but odds seemed to be on the side of the stronger player - Ding Liren had a game with black against the higher rated GM Zhou Jianchao, while Wang Hao had white against one of the lower rated grandmasters, GM Liang Chong.

The final day was a fairy tale to Ding Liren. He got a direct win due to the zero tolerance policy applied by the organizers (his opponent was late for the game). And to complete the total turn of events, Wang Hao lost to Liang Chong to make Ding Liren Chinese Chess Champion.
