Mike and Rose are in the high school
Mike: What's all that noise!
Rose:Ryan just announced that he's running1 for class president.Mike:Again Doesn't he know he'll never beat Tony
Rose: Guess not. He thinks he'll win. He says everyone's tired of Tony's broken promises.2
Mike: Great. Two weeks of listening to those two. No one else is running
Rose: Oh, yeah! That cute boy Neil's up for3 office,4 too. He's my choice.
Mike: You're voting5 for him just because he's sexy What about the strengths6 and weaknesses6 of his platform7
Rose: He plays guitar.
Mike: That's not a platform.
Rose: Well, he wants more participation8 in clubs and student activities.
Mike:What's the use Tony just uses those clubs as a way to get out of 9 class. They never actually do anything.
Rose: Well, maybe Tony won't win.
Mike:Get real.10 Tony's too good a talker.11 Everybody thinks he hung the moon.
Rose: It's just talk,11 though. As soon as the campaign's12 over, he forgets everything he promised.
Mike:Like the new desks he said he'd get us-two years ago!
Rose:Exactly! And that makes people angry.
Mike:Doesn't matter. Tony's popular. And besides, he's loaded.13
Rose:Right! He treated the whole school to pizza at the pre-election party last year.

●What's the use
A:Maybe I should talk to Josie about her drinking problem.
B: What's the use She won't listen.
A:Do you want me to take the day off so that we can sit down and talk
B:What's the use You never listen to me anyway.

The next day
Mike: Did someone give you something this morning?
Rose: Yeah, a "gift" from Tony-a note with ten bucks.
Mike: Is that legal?(1) Isn't that vote-buying?(2)
Rose: It was just a gift. It didn't say we had to vote for him, so I guess it's OK.
Mike: It still seems pretty fishy.(3)
Rose: Don't read too much into it. Hey, look! Ryan's handing out (4)flyers!(5) Maybe we'll get some more money.
Mike: Nope, I already got one. But he really hit the nail on the head.
Rose: Was he Tony-bashing(6) again?
Mike: Kind of. He said our school needs a change. Tony's already been president for two years.
Rose: I agree. Did he say anything else?
Mike: Just that Tony has no morals(7) because he's dumped(8) three girls this year already.
Rose: What's that got to do with anything? That's so low.(9)
Mike: Like Neil's any better.(10)
Rose: Ryan always has to attack other people to try to win. At least Neil practices what he preaches.(11)
Mike: You mean just because he plays guitar for everybody at lunch?
Rose: No, because he gets people to take part(12) by taking part himself. He leads by action.
Mike: Maybe it'd work better if he played better.
Rose: At least he tries. So, I'm voting for him.
Mike: I bet you're the only one.

Don't read too much into it.

Don't read too much into it.
A: Johnny sent me flowers. Oh, no, I bet he wants to marry me. What am I going to do?
B: Don't read too much into it. He hasn't even asked you out on a date yet.

Two days before the election
Rose: Let's check out the poll(1) results in the school paper.
Mike:Surprise, surprise,(2)Tony's way(3) ahead.
Rose: Arghh! Not Tony again!
Mike: I'm afraid so. A vote for Neil or Ryan would just be wasted.(4)
Rose: I don't care! I'm still voting(5) with my heart, not my head!
Mike: But if Tony wins, he said he'll get *NSync(6) to play at our dance.
Rose: Tony may have connections,(7) but he isn't trustworthy.(8)
Mike: What about Ryan? He's a great debater.(9)
Rose: He hits(10) below the belt. And what has he ever said "he" will do?
Mike: Nothing, really. He just cuts Tony down to size.
Rose: So, Neil is the best choice.
Mike: Neil's an idealist.(11) He wants everyone to come and play with him.
Rose: Cool. Why don't you?
Mike: I can't even play an instrument.(12)
Rose: He's always helping people with their homework. He's the only candidate(13)with real values!
Mike: I'm waiting until the campaigning is over to decide.
Rose: Hah, you just want to go to Tony's pre-election party.
Mike: No, I want to hear the candidates' final speeches. Is Tony having another pizza party?
Rose: Better. He's renting Bubba's disco for the night. The whole school's invited.
Mike: He's just too much.

1.cut someone down to size
A: Everyone thinks Les is the coolest guy in school.
B: Maybe I should tell them about him cheating on that last Chemistry test. That'd really cut him down to size.
