My character changed a lot when I entered the junior high school. I became a quiet boy reluctant to make friends with others. At that time, both the junior and senior high schools were hard to join through the admission exam. I succeeded because I did well in my studies. The teacher in charge of my class in the junior high school was a new graduate from the Fushun Normal School nearby. She taught mathematics, and her name was Chen as I remember. One time she led us to the countryside to take part in labor training. During the training my left eye was injured by one of the staff of the county government. The eye was swollen badly, revealing a scar even now, but only in the point of the eyebrow without making my face too ugly. Teacher Chen took me carefully, afraid to be blamed by my parents. I told her that they would not because they had so many kids to feed. She took me to the commune clinic nearby to see the doctor. That staff also came to my house to see me several times. Everything went along fine. She treated me always nicely. We were very sad for a long time, when we heard that she had become friendly with our painting teacher, because we felt he was too old for her. They did not succeed because of unknown reason. She was one teacher who left a very deep impression on me.

I had been a member of the class committee in charge of the course of physics until graduation from junior high school. The new teacher in charge of the class was named Li, and I remember that he wore glasses and treated me well. It was his strong influence that made me give up the thought of going to a normal school to save money for the family.

Now it is the time for me to tell you what made me determined to learn a foreign language. What was the driving force that made my thought fly to it when I even did not know what a foreign language was in my childhood? It happened in the junior high school. One day during a class break, some students and I remained in the classroom when someone wrote a string of foreign-like words on the blackboard, but which read out a Chinese sentence. He said it was Chinese phonetic alphabet. That was something I learned when I was in the elementary school, but failed to master at all. It was in a style of parts of Chinese characters called "letters in Chinese sound". Those that he wrote on the blackboard looked foreign. I was deeply moved by the beautiful "foreign words" at once, and a thirst for mastering the Chinese phonetic alphabet came up in my mind.

In my childhood I could not get money from the family to go to see movies. The only way for us was to sneak into the cinema. My friends and I made our way in through the loose places between the restroom and the fence. If one of us was unluckily caught and kicked out of the cinema, he would wait until the movie was shown for one hour. Then the watchman was stung by conscience to let him in. It was not so easy for us to do so because that was in the night in cold winter in the Northeast. When I grew a little bigger, I went out to collect the waste copper, iron, and broken glass to sell. I gave the big money I earned to the family and kept the smaller amounts to go to the cinema or buy foreign novels.
