Battersea Dog’s Home

Battersea is part of Central London on the south bank of the river Thames. It is most famous for its Power Station, now a grade II listed building, and for the Battersea Dog’s Home, which is close to the Power Station.

The English are supposed to be a nation of pet lovers, but in the nineteenth century London streets were full of hundreds of dogs that had been lost or abandoned by their owners. Many were sick, some crippled, and most were half-starved. In 1862, Mrs. Mary Tealby founded the Temporary Home for Lost and Starving Dogs in north London, later moving it to Battersea, where it has been ever since. The number of dogs helped by The Home reached a peak of 42,500 in 1896, and has been declining since then, but even today The Home rescues about 7000 dogs a year in London.

According to Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, the total number of stray dogs in Britain as a whole was estimated at 100,000 in 2005. Presently about 150 stray dogs are destroyed every week.

Where do all these dogs come from?
Some are just lost, but the majority have been abandoned by their owners who no longer want them. At this point charities like the Battersea Dog’s Home or Dogs Trust step in. They rescue the strays and try to reunite the lost dogs with their owners; for the others they provide food, shelter and rehabilitation, and try to find them new homes.

Many dogs are abandoned because their owners have not thought carefully enough before taking responsibility for them. Initially people can have good intentions, and thoughts of the fun of owning and playing with a cute puppy can lead to a hasty decision. Later, as the puppy grows into a dog, the reality of the cost, hard work and sacrifice needed to keep a pet properly becomes too much. The dog is no longer wanted, and sadly some people then abandon them.

Battersea Dog’s Home recommends that anyone who wants the pleasure of owning a dog first considers four important questions before buying one, the questions of cost, time, circumstances and commitment.

Cost: It’s not cheap to keep a dog. Battersea estimate that food costs an average of £10 per week, or £520 per year. To this must be added the annual cost of vaccination, about £45, combined worm and flea treatment every 4-6 months, up to £50, and neutering ( for health and behavioral reasons) up to £200.  Puppies need a series of three vaccinations costing about £30 each, and pet insurance costs £10 to £40 a month. All these can require a budget of more than £1000.

Time:  Dogs are social creatures and should not be left alone for long periods. Dogs need regular exercise (up to 3 walks per day) for as much as an hour a time; also time is needed for daily grooming, training and playing. If you spend long hours at work a dog is not for you.

Circumstances:  Will a dog fit into the lifestyle of the pet owner and other family members? Dogs may not be compatible with other pets, or may make the house less tidy, or some members of the family may have allergic reactions to particular animals for example. The living space available for pets is also an important measure; it is not humane to cramp a dog in a tiny cage.

Commitment:  A puppy can expect to live for 12 ~ 15 years. If you cannot make a commitment for this length of time then a puppy is not for you. Pets need constant care just as a young child does, except they do not grow up to become independent like a child, thus the owner’s responsibility remains continuous or possibly more as the pets get older.

Regrettably, the experience of charities like the Battersea Dog’s Home shows that many people rush into buying a dog without considering the four questions outlined above. The result is the huge number of stray dogs in Britain today. Most of us, adult or children, have neither the time nor the commitment to give constant care to pets for so many years, if we assess our circumstances practically. Giving a pet animal to other people or your own children as a present is really giving them a huge responsibility, please consider carefully.
