The core of Confucianism and Taoism is the headstream of advocating elegance and despising popularity.  Refined tastes are the refined sentiment and aesthetic tastes which came into being in the course of the internalization of Taoistic Confucianism and the application of Taoistic Confucianism to aesthethics. Not only were the refined tastes ubiquitous in various artistic forms, but also it existed in the elegant insterest and lofty sentiment and life style of the men of letters. On the moral premise of advocating elegance and despising popularity, schloars fervidly pursued the lifestyle of gentlemen and  creatively introduced their doctrines into art. Thus, in ancient China, the artistic tradition and aesthetic tastes which advocated elegance and sought ideal state came into existence and it exclusively belonged to Chinese scholars.
