排球运动1895年起源于美国，最初是在篮球场地上挂一张网，两队隔网站立，以篮球胆为球，在网上打来打去，不使其落地的一种游戏。后来美国马萨诸塞州霍利奥克城的基督教青年会干事摩根(w.G.Morgan)创造了排球比赛。1896年摩根制定了世界上第一个排球竞赛规则，同年在斯普林菲尔德专科学校举行世界上最早的排球赛。斯普林菲尔德市立学院的特哈尔斯戴博士将其命名为volleyball，意为"空中飞球"。 
    排球运动1900年左右自美国传入加拿大，1905年传入古巴、巴西等国家，成为当时风靡美洲的一项时尚运动。1914～1918年第一次世界大战期间，排球运动先后在法国、意大利、苏联、波兰等国家流传开来并得到广泛开展。排球规则在发展过程中不断完善，1912年排球比赛规则规定，双方上场的运动员必须轮转位置。1917年规定每局为15分，五局三胜制。1918年规定上场运动员每队为6人。1922年规定每方必须在3次以内将球击过网。1949年在捷克斯洛伐克的布拉格举行了首届世界男子排球锦标赛，1952年在前苏联的莫斯科举行了首届世界女子排球锦标赛。排球运动在1964年就成为奥运会的正式比赛项目。
