As excitement around the world starts building for the new Harry Potter film, we are going to end with some new science that's bringing the world a fiction closer to reality.

Researchers in the UK have shown it's possible to make a flexible film that could one day be used to make a real-life invisibility cloak. Known as a metamaterial, it can manipulate the path of light - and excitingly, these new materials can actually do it for visible light, says Dr Andrea Di Falco from the microphysics group at St Andrews University in Scotland.

"It is about developing a new kind of materials which belongs to the broad area of metamaterials, which is flexible and interacts in a controlled way with the visible light so the colours that we cannot see."

"So it's some sort of flexible material that can interact with light and change the way that it moves."

"Exactly. The way in which it can propagate, which is the key element to one day, hopefully, be able to fabricate invisibility device, so devices that can conceal an object."

"And the way that they would do that is by bending lights around that object. You could wrap that object, presumably in some of this material. The light would bend around it, and the object would seem to disappear."

“其中的原理便是这种材料能使物体周围的光线转弯。比方说你可以将一个物体包裹在某种弹性材料里,光线经过时便会转弯,看起来就像物体消失了一样。”
