 1. jubilation: n. The act of rejoicing. 欢腾,欢庆:欢腾、欢庆的行为, 欢欣; 欢呼; 庆祝
2. wee: adj. a. Very small; tiny. 很小的;细小的 b. Very early: 很早:eg. the wee hours of the morning. 凌晨一、二、三点钟
3. metaphor: A figure of speech in which a word or phrase that ordinarily designates one thing is used to designate another, thus making an implicit comparison, as in “a sea of troubles”
4. talisman: n. An object marked with magic signs and believed to confer on its bearer supernatural powers or protection. 护身符:上面画有魔力符号并被相信能给它的佩戴者带来超自然力量或保护的一个物体 eg. Beauty is sometimes a most powerful talisman. 美貌有时是一种极为强大的法宝
5. trample: v. 7. slog: vi. To walk or progress with a slow, heavy pace; plod: 沉重缓慢的前进:以缓慢、沉重的步子行走或前进;沉重缓慢地走:eg. slog across the swamp; slogged through both volumes. 沉重缓慢地走过沼泽地;缓慢吃力地读完了那两卷
8. embolden: vt. To foster boldness or courage in; encourage. Synonyms: encourage 给以胆量:加强某人的胆量或勇气;鼓励encourage eg. This emboldened me to ask for more help. 这使我更大胆地开口请求更多的帮助。
9. unequivocal: adj. Admitting of no doubt or misunderstanding; clear and unambiguous: 毫不含糊的;明确的:不容许疑问或误解的;明确和不含糊的:eg. an unequivocal success. 明确成功
10. 12. precipitate: vt. A. To throw from or as if from a great height; hurl downward: 下掷,由高处抛下:从或好象从极高处抛下;向下投掷:b. To cause to happen, especially suddenly or prematurely. 7. galvanize: vt. A. To stimulate or shock with an electric current. 通电流:受到电流刺激或电击 b. To arouse to awareness or action; spur: 唤醒:唤醒注意和行动;刺激,激励:eg. the galvanized iron 镀锌铁皮, 白铁皮 be galvanized to [into] life 受刺激而活跃起来
8. ballot: n. The act, process, or method of voting 投票:投票的行为、过程或方式 eg. cast[take] a ballot 投票 vote by ballot 投票表决[选举] There was a large ballot. 票数很多。
9. initiative: eg. on (one's) own initiative: Without prompting or direction from others; on one's own. 自主的:没有他人的怂勇或指导的;自己做主的initiative spirit 主动精神 initiative genius 自发的天才peace initiative 和平的开端 individual initiative 个人的积极性 subjective initiative 主观能动性 win initiative 赢得主动 take the initiative in making acquaintances 主动交朋友 He helped me on his own initiative. 他主动帮助我。|n. 12. plump: vi. To drop abruptly or heavily: 倒下,坠下:突然地或沉重地坠下:eg. plumped into the easy chair. 扑通一下坐在安乐椅上 b. To give full support or praise: 全面地支持,赞不绝口:给予全面的支持或赞扬:eg. plumped for the candidate throughout the state. 整个州全力支持这位侯选人 vt. Eg. plumped the books onto the table. 把书用力扔到桌上
13. rail: vi. To express objections or criticisms in bitter, harsh, or abusive language. Synonyms: scold 责骂,抱怨:用愤恨、粗俗、辱骂的语言表示反对或批评
14. vicious: adj. eg. vicious gossip. 恶意中伤的闲话a vicious companion 一个坏朋友 a vicious textbook 错误百出的教科书 vicious criticism 恶意的批评 vicious reasoning 错误的推理 a vicious headache 剧烈的头痛
15. grisly: adj. Inspiring repugnance; gruesome. Synonyms: ghastly 令人厌恶的;恐怖的 eg. a grisly countenance 狰狞的面孔
16. live with: To put up with; resign oneself to: 忍受;顺应:<口>承认, 忍受(不愉快的事) eg. disliked the situation but had to live with it. 不喜欢这种状态但必须忍受它
17. ponder: v. To weigh in the mind with thoroughness and care. 思索,衡量:在头脑中彻底且仔细地加以权衡 eg. He pondered his words thoroughly. 他说每一句话要仔细掂量。
18. tangle: n. A confused, intertwined mass. 纠缠,纠纷:乱糟糟缠在一起的一团 eg. traffic tangles 混乱的交通状况 a tangle with sb. 与某人争执 His hair is all in a tangle. 他的头发乱成一团。His mind was in a tangle. 他的思想陷于困惑之中。
19. oddness: n. 奇怪, 奇妙
20. mundane: adj. Of, relating to, or typical of this world; secular. 世俗的:属于、有关或者象征世界的;尘世的 eg. mundane affairs 俗事
21. apocalypse: n. a. The Book of Revelation. B. A prophetic disclosure; a revelation. 先知预言;天启
apocalyptic: adj. eg. now speaks in apocalyptic terms about the probable conflict ahead (Financial Times)“现在以预示灾变似的话语讲着未来可能发生的冲突”(金融时报)
