the Puffing Billy Railway

It's been pretty fine these days so a couple of friends couldn't help but wanted to get away from the suburbs of Melbourne.
Well, so it seems that even the suburbs of a city can be pretty tiring! People would just want to get as faraway from the cities as possible.

So all of a sudden I was just told by Peter that he would want to drive the whole lot of people to the old railways of Puffing Billy and take the train to have a trip starting from Belgrave.

I had to get up early the next morning. The alarm of LP's cell phone was the most hideous sound that could ever be heard in the morning, monotonous and indifferent.

After a quick shower and a quick breakie, it was time to roll!

It was Peter's turn to drive. It was a good hour before we could reach Belgrave, where we had a brief break in a small cafe. I don't know why I would always love to have an Irish coffee in a cafe whenever possible. Obviously the little cafe in the country-Belgrave wasn't really licensed to sell any drink with alcohol, I, as a result, had to put up with a Cappuccino.

These days I'm almost finding anything Italian disgusting.

And before long we were at the Belgrave station of the Puffing Billy Railway.

In the country side everything would just kind of remind you of the game Final Fantasy VIII. Actually I had this feeling when LP and I were visiting the southern towns like Geelong and Philip Island last year as well.

And now, the train carriages also bear a considerable resemblance.

Here I learned that the locomotives are still steam driven... I guess that's why it was named PUFFING Billy?;-)

And this railway line was originally built starting from around 60 kms east of Melbourne, going S-Eward deep into the mountains and ranches, just to expand the British settlements in the great Melbourne area.

Those creators of Final Fantasy must have come to Australia before...:)

It was just nice to ride on the train, which only ran slowly. And the people from the country side always waved to all the passengers on the train when we passed them by.

What makes the people here so happy about everything?
I've never seen a single stranger waving at me with a smile when I am on a train passing him/her by in China since I was born!

The Aussies are definitely not holding a grudge against anyone:)

And our friends here concluded that usually, the country people would just be nicer than those from the cities, to which I said probably it also applied in China in a certain way.

We got off at the Emerald Lake Side station and had a quick lunch, after which we hurried back to the train to get back to Belgrave. The schedule turned out to be pretty tight because according to the orange time table of Puffing Billy, the last train that was bound for Belgrave would depart Emerald Lake Side at 2:20 pm.

In Belgrave we got into our car and started driving back. We covered some different roads from the ones that we did on the way to Belgrave.
We had brief stops in Mount Dandenong and Olinda, which are both basically Dandenong Ranges. I thought the word "ranges" just meant "the out skirts of..." anyway:)

These little villages were just beautiful, peaceful, affluent and probably for local residents, boring - typical villages you can see in Final Fantasy as well.

So that was the day when we had a short trip to the Puffing Billy railway line.
It seems that even for a country with only a history of 200 years or so, there is already something out there that they would want to reserve, as some memories of good old days or maybe, also the hardship suffered.
