Alan Smith
will play his football at St James' Park in
2007/08 after Newcastle confirmed they have signed
the striker for an undisclosed fee.
Smith signs for Newcastle in a five-year
deal that brings an end to the 26-year-old's stay at Old
Trafford.
He elected to join Sam Allardyce's side,
despite strong interest from several other Premier League clubs,
with Everton and Middlesbrough also reported to be
interested.
Smith made the controversial switch across
the Pennines to joined the Reds from Leeds in May 2004 for
£7million. He made 93 appearances for United,
scoring 12 goals during a three-year spell in which he became a
crowd favourite at Old Trafford.
The striker trained with
his new team-mates on Friday and could make his debut on Sunday as
Sam Allardyce's side take on Sampdoria.
