I. New Words and Phrases

1. panic  v. (cause to) feel panic (使)恐慌

Don't panic! It's not serious at all. 不要害怕!没什么大不了的。

He panicked over the coming test. 他对将要到来的考试感到恐惧。

n.[singular; U] (a state of) sudden uncontrollable quickly-spreading terror or anxiety 惊慌,惊恐

panic-stricken 惊慌失措的,极度受惊的

When people in the room heard someone crying “Fire! Fire!” they were seized by panic and began to run in all directions.

当屋子里的人听到有人喊“起火啦!起火啦!”时,他们惊慌失措,四处逃散。

2. terrified  adj. very much afraid;badly frightened 很害怕;极度惊恐的,吓坏了的

He was terrified at the thought of parachuting. 他一想到跳伞就极度惊恐。

I'm terrified at tigers. 我对老虎怕的要命。

3. infer  vt. from an opinion from or make a judgment based on (something);deduce(根据某事)推断,推定

What can you infer from the title? 从这个题目你能推断出什么?

Can you infer the author's main idea from what he wrote?

你能从这位作者所写的东西中推断出他的主要思想吗?

4. bother  v. 1) cause trouble, worry, or annoyance to (someone), especially repeatedly or continually, in little ways 打扰,烦扰

Don’t bother me with little things like that.   别拿这种鸡毛蒜皮的事来烦我。

I'm sorry to bother you, but can you direct me to the railway station?

劳驾,你能不能告诉我到火车站怎么走?

2) cause inconvenience to oneself; trouble oneself 为……而烦恼,为……操心(常与about, with, to连用)

I never bother to iron my shirts. 我从不烫衬衫。

Don't bother with/about it.       别为此操心。

5. affair  n. [plural; C] an event or set of connected events. 事情;事件

The minister is busy with important affairs of state. 部长忙于重要国务。

These are my private affairs; they are none of your business. 这是我的私事,不关你的事。

Extending Knowledge:

C.f. affair, event, matter, thing, business

affair 指已经发生或必须去做的事情,以单数形式出现时,通常指一般的“事情”,而以复数形式出现时,通常指重大的“事情”。不管单、复数这个词所表示的“事情”都包含着“在进行中”、“处在过程中”或“交易、交往”的意思。

Having found out that his wife had an affair with another man, the poor man wanted to kill himself. 那个可怜的男人由于发现他的妻子与另一个男子有私情而想自杀。

the world affairs世界事务;国际事务  foreign affairs 外交事务

event通常指具有很大影响、意义大的事件或运动会的比赛项目。

Can you remember the events which happened in the 1960s?

你能记得发生在二十世纪六十年代的事件吗?

matter 意思为“毛病”、“问题”,通常指“要注意的事情” 通常指客观存在的或有待处理的问题。

What's the matter with you? 你怎么啦?

thing 是指“事情”“事务”“东西”的意思,指大事、小事、好事、坏事,但一般不用来指专门的事务。有时为了含糊其词而有意用 thing。

To say is one thing but to do is another. 说是一回事做是另一回事情。

business作“事情”解释,一般指“公事”“正事”“商业事务”,强调任务,职务等指派的工作。

He is on business. 他出差了。

It's none of your business. 与你无关。

Be that as it may, the nerve poison does its business with man far more quickly than the blood poison.

尽管如此,神经毒液毒杀人类比血毒液快得多。

6. romantic  adj. dealing with or suggesting love and adventure 富于浪漫色彩的,充满传奇情调的

the romantic adventures of Alice 爱丽丝的富有传奇色彩的奇遇

a romantic love story 浪漫的爱情故事

I was told that Spain is a romantic nation. 有人告诉我说,西班牙是个浪漫的国家。

7. tone  n. 1) [C] a particular quality of the voice regarded as expressing a particular feeling or meaning; manners of expression 语气,腔调

He spoke in an angry tone. 他用愤怒的语气说话。

My father told me his decision in a serious tone. 我父亲用严肃的语气告诉我他的决定。

2) [C] the quality or character of the sound produced by a particular instrument or singing voice (乐器、歌声的)音调;音色;音质

I wish I had a piano with better tone. 但愿我有一架音色更好的钢琴。

8. resort to: make use of ; turn to (often to something bad ) for help 采取,求助于(通常为不好的事物)

Some countries resort to force to bully weaker countries. 有些国家借助武力欺负弱小国家。

I'm sorry you have resorted to deception.                我很遗憾你竟用欺骗手段。

resort to all kinds of methods采取一切办法

Note: resort to the seaside 常去海滨 此处resort to 意为常去

resort: n. [C]a place to which many people go for recreation, rest, etc. 度假地,游览胜地

a mountain resort 一个山区游览胜地

9. in labor: the act of giving birth 分娩

When in labor, the mother has to bear great pain. 在分娩时,这位母亲不得不忍受巨大的疼痛。

She said she didn’t experience a lot of pain when she was in labor.

她说她分娩时并没有经历什么特别的痛苦。

Ⅱ. Language Points

1.To communicate, Dr.Chan often resorts to body language.

Meaning: In order to exchange ideas with the patients, Dr. Chan often makes use of body languages, such as gestures or facial expressions.

2.At first I was concerned about the impersonal aspect of using a phone.

Meaning: In the beginning I was worried about he negative effects of using a phone because of it inability to fully express personality and feelings.

impersonal: im(用在b,m,p之前,表示不,无,非) per-son 个人 + -al…的

3.The duration of an average visit is about 15 minutes.

Meaning: An average visiting time lasts about 15 minutes.

4.It's not easy being part of people's personal lives. Interpreters have heard everything, from business

transactions to personal emergencies.

Meaning: It’s very difficult to be involved in people’s personal lives. Interpreters have heard everything, including important things like business transactions, as well as very urgent and personal things such as giving birth to a baby.

It = being part of people’s personal lives

5.One interpreter had to coach a woman in labor to push harder

Meaning:One interpreter had to encourage a woman who was having a baby to use more strength in order to get the baby out of her womb.

6.“Language Line Service was a lifesaver.”

Meaning: “Language Line Service saved my life.”

Ⅲ. Practical Writing

Revision: e-mail messages; “Help wanted” Ads; Placing Orders; Filling in invoices
