. New Words and Phrases

1.contain  v.hold; have within itself or a part

The album contains many memorable songs.                   这张唱片中包括许多值得收集的歌曲。

At the sight of this cruelty , he could hardly contain his anger.       

见此残暴情形, 他无法克制自己的愤怒。

2.pretend  v.give an appearance of (something this is not true), with the intention of deceiving

He pretended that he was innocent.                他假装无辜。

He pretended to be friendly with me.              他假装对我友善。

3.illegal  a. against the law

Large numbers of illegal immigrants have brought serious social problems to the country.

大批非法移民的进入给这个国家带来严重的社会问题。

The sale of cigarettes to children under 16 is illegal in some countries.

在有些国家,向不到16岁的孩子出售香烟是犯法的。

4.benefit  n.[C;U] anything that brings help, advantage, or profit

China and America can work together for their mutual benefits and progress.

Regular morning exercises will benefit you a lot.             有规律地进行晨练会使你受益匪浅。

5. recommend  vt.1) advise or suggest as a correct or suitable course of action

Doctors strongly recommend that fathers should be present at their baby's birth.

医生强烈建议父亲在孩子出世时呆在身边。

2) praise or being good for a purpose; provide information about something/ someone good

I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in chemistry.     

我向任何对化学感兴趣的人推荐这本书。

6.lead to: result in

Smoking can lead to lung cancer.                             抽烟可能导致肺癌。

7.shut down: (cause to) stop operating, esp. for a long time or forever

Some coal-mines had to shut down.                            有些煤矿不得不关闭。

8.hang out: spend time in a place

As an experienced policeman, he knows where the thieves usually hang out.

作为有经验的警察,他知道窃贼们通常在那里出没。

9.trick… into doing…: deceive somebody into doing something by tricks

The old man tricked the young woman into marrying him by promising to buy her a new house.

10.log off: finish a period of using a computer system by performing a fixed set of operations, exit a computer

. Text Learning

1. But look out —you never know who is at the other end of the line.(Para.1)

Meaning: But be careful, as you can never tell what kind of person is communicating with you through the Internet.

2. “You have no idea if a person is playing a role or it could thus be harmful.” (Para.5)

Meaning: “You don’t know whether the person ‘talk’ to you is pretending to be another person, so it could do harm to you.” 

3. They offer “chat rooms” so that strangers can “talk”, along with easy-to-use electronic mail. (Para.6)

Meaning: Besides the e-mail service that is easy to use, the major online services also provide “chat rooms” where strangers can “talk” to each other by typing words into the computer.

4. The most frightening thing is when they arrange to meet kids in person. (Para. 8)

Meaning: The most terrible thing is that they try to make arrangements for the kids to meet them face-to-face.

5. When you get several million people together, as online services do, there are bound to be some strange ones on the loose. (Para.14)

Meaning: when millions of people gather together, as they do with the help of online services, some strange people are likely to be among them and they are not under control.

loose  n. [U] [as in on the loose] the state of being free from control, esp. having escaped from prison

A bear broke out of its cage in the zoo yesterday. Police are still searching for the animal on the loose.

一头熊昨天从动物园的笼子里逃脱。警察正在搜寻这头在逃的动物。

a. 1) not fastened, tied up, shut up,etc.; free from control

The fox broke loose and ran away.                               狐狸挣脱了束缚跑掉了。

2) not firmly or tightly fixed; movable when it should be firm

She was in her nightdress, with her hair hanging loose on her shoulder. 

她穿着睡衣,头发松散地披在肩上。

on the loose: free, esp. having escaped from prison

The murderer escaped from prison last year and is still on the loose.

那个杀人犯去年逃离监狱,现在仍逍遥法外。

6. There is no need for alarm, as long as you are aware. (Para.17)

Meaning: As long as you are conscious of the situation you are in online,  you do not have to be afraid.

Ⅲ.Practical Writing: writing memos

  Ask the students to write a notice after learning the samples.
