1. Roger Federer: The plot thickened considerably after his takedown of Rafael Nadal -- 6-0 in the third! -- in Hamburg, Germany. Lost in the "rivalry" talk, there's a "Roger Slam" on the line here. There are a few possible landmines (Ferrero? Safin?) on the road to the final but in a winner-take-all match against Nadal, you have to go with the two-time defending champ.

Rafael Nadal: A quick preliminary word here about subjective seedings: Rankings be damned, how can a two-time defending champ who's won 81 of his last 82 matches on clay and never lost at Roland Garros, not come in as the favorite? Nadal has a tricky draw -- starting with Juan Martin del Potro and a possible round-of-16 dust-up with Lleyton Hewitt. Plus Nadal has played an awful lot of tennis this spring. Still, we have to pick him to win again.

Hewitt is discovering a knack for clay late in his career; he comes in as the oddsmakers fourth choice and it's hard to disagree. Just too bad for him, he's in Nadal's quadrant.
