Green Trains  part one

I lived in the Rail West District, the industrial center of Shenyang, and the name “Rail West” came from the fact that there was a railway bridge on the east side. Each time I passed there on a bus ride, I would stand on my toes to peer up on the bridge, for, often, there were trains running on it---the power and speed, and the distant places they were heading for, all these would strike every kid with excitement and awe.

Then, I got glaucoma, so my mother took me to the south of the country for treatment. At that time, from Shenyang to Shanghai, it took a whole day and a night by train--- a real feeling of long journey. Before our departure, many neighbors came to our home and asked my mom to bring back for them a la mode clothes, lollies, and cream biscuits, etc.  A lot of kids even said enviously that they would rather have glaucoma so that they could go to Shanghai too. It was China in the 1970s.

On the train, I was excited for but a short while before weariness and sleepiness fell. My mom gave her seat to me so that I could enjoy a small “bed” and I slept like a log. I was at that time inconsiderate and careless; I did not know how mom spent the night. When the train approaching the Yangtze River, mom woke me up and told me the Great Nanjing Bridge was right ahead. This gigantic stuff, which I had seen on countless posters and was on the 20-cent bank note, was about to pass before my eyes.

It was night and pitch dark when the train went on the bridge, all I could see were the bridge lamps whirring backward. Envisioning the deep and wide river under, the rumbling sound of the train seemed hollow and empty, not that harsh and aggressive. It took over 10 minutes for the train to cover the bridge, and I was thinking “what a bridge”, and that it had to be the longest bridge in the world, much like I thought China was the biggest country in the world and that Shenyang was the largest city in China, second only to Beijing of course.
