周六中午，午饭后不久，碰见2位读者，男的是美国人，手持一张纸，上写：Samuel J.
Raymond，从 San Francisco
乘船抵沪，死于1865年。女的是个中国人，自称男的女友。说这个Raymond是男友的祖先。想查一下他的死因，被安葬在上海哪里。
利用百度，似乎无法查出这个“名人”。或许此人的名气还真不够响亮。于是Google 和 Google book search
双管齐下搜索：Samuel Raymond shanghai，倒是查到一些端倪：

2、是一本1864年的Freemason's monthly
magazine，共济会月刊。其中P352有：
MASONRY AT SHANGHAI. A correspondent at
Shanghai, CHINA, under date May 21st, writes, that
“Ancient Landmark Lodge” was organized on the 9th of
May, under the Dispensation granted by Grand Master Parkman in Dec
last. The W. Master appointed Bro. Samuel J.
Raymond as J. Warden, pro tem, in place of Bro. John F.
Haskins, named in the Dispensation, having left the
country.
也就是说这个共济会员Raymond 于1864年被提名临时（pro
tem）接替某人赴沪。而1866年死讯已传回美国，也就是说刚去就感染时疫而死的。着实可悲……
此人有可能埋在上海的什么地方？通过查阅：薛理勇：上海的“外国坟山”《上海滩地名掌故》、[法]安克强（Christian
Henriot）：上海租界公墓研究（1844—1949
年）（《中国海洋大学学报(社会科学版)》2008年5期）、郑祖安：“山东路公墓”的变迁（《档案与史学》2001年6期）、陈蕴茜、吴敏：殖民主义影响下的上海公墓变迁、山东路外国公墓（上海档案信息网)……扩展阅读：上海图书馆编《老上海风情录外侨辨踪卷》、唐振常《上海史》、熊月之《上海通志》……，大致可以确认1860年代，他最有可能的埋葬地在山东路公墓（1844-1868）、浦东墓地（1859-1904）。
这些墓地，根据安克强的研究，在1951年后被迁移到青浦的吉安公墓。不过文革中此墓地应该受到破坏。
