海涛法师法语(六)修心法要  
The Essence of Mind Training (I)
Compiled by Ven. Hai Tao

1.功德来自修行,而非供奉死者。佛陀并不称颂死亡,他赞扬人身难得,趁还活著的时候修行很重要。
1. Buddha Sakyamuni eulogized the precious human life and he rarely focus on the importance of death.  It’s important to utilize this precious human body for our spiritual practices, from which we will gain merits and accomplishment. This can never be achieved by worshiping the dead.

2.觉察错误,立刻改正;发现善事,立即去做。
2. As for the mistake, observe it and correct it immediately; as for the goodness, do it spontaneously without any hesitation.

3.放弃恶行后,心就能静下来,并入定;心入定后,就能生出智慧。
3. A peaceful mind arise from the abandonment of evil deeds, and deep concentration should then be expected, as a result of which wisdom is actualized.

4.无论乐与苦或爱与恨,都是你重要的老师,它们是解脱的根源。
4. Any sort of circumstance is your important teacher: be it joyful, painful, desirable, or hateful – they will all lead you toward liberation.

5.如果有贪爱或憎恶,意味著有因存在,有因就会有果。如果有生,就会有灭,这就是自然。
5. Nothing comes of nothing.  Love or hate is the effect, which must denote a corresponding cause.  While there is a cause, there would be an effect; so is the case of the existence and extinction.  And that is the law of nature.

6.当贪爱与执著存在时,就会有憎恶与反感。如果有天堂可达,未来就有地狱可入,反之亦然。
6. Hatred and dislikes will appear when there is an attachment and desire. Likewise, when there is an access to heaven, there’s also one to hell, and vice versa.

7.佛陀时代的觉者和我们没有两样,都是从平凡与迷惘开始。
7. The enlightened Ones in Buddha Sakyamuni’s time used to be as ordinary and ignorant as us.

8.如果能将心看好,则看管身与口的行为就不是一件困难的事,因为它们都受到心的驱策与监督。
8. If you can control your mind, then you can discipline your bodily actions and spoken words easily. Mind is the forerunner of everything.

9.心是一切行为的根源。
9. Our Mind is the only source of all actions.

10.保持自制,注意你的语言与行为,并对自己的行为负责,这就是戒。
10. To be self-disciplined, take charge of your speech and behavior; and being responsible for them – this is precepts.

11.坚持正念正知,这就是定。
11. what is Meditation? To remain yourself in the state of mindfulness and alertness

12.在意识的领域中,能分辨一切现象的善恶与是非者,就是智慧。
12. In our consciousness, the self-arisen Wisdom will enable us to discern between evil and  good,  and between right and wrong

13.修行从粗糙开始,经由禅定与内观的淬炼,它将变得愈来愈微妙。
13. Spiritual Practices begins with general and gross levels, but when our meditation and insights become more refined and subtle, it would bring forth more mystical and inconceivable experiences.

14.心本身事实上是自由的,因为执著而有痛苦。
14. Our Mind is primordially free and unstained, suffering only arises when there is attachment.

15.当心执著苦与乐时,对执著的觉知亦随之而起。
15. When our Mind attaches to pain and joy, let the awareness of this attachment arises spontaneously.

16.没有一件事能禁得起正念与智慧的照射。
16. Under the bright light of  Mindfulness and Wisdom, all defilements and illusions dissolve at once.

17.见就只是见,觉就只是觉,心与境皆如实呈现,不再加油添醋,创造无明的印象。
17. When you see, just see. When you feel, just feel. Let all subject-object related phenomena manifest themselves as they are, no judgments,  no labels. Hence without any trace of ignorance.

18.不要急著训练别人,应该先管好自己。
18. Train yourself well before teaching others to do so.

19.以善法为基础的人生,将会发生出灿烂与尊贵的光芒。
19. Utilizing goodness and kindness as the basis of your Life, then you will shine with glorious brightness and nobility.

20.无明的黑暗比眼盲更可怕。
20. When you are blind, you see only darkness.
But when you are ignorant, you are totally blocked from the ultimate Truth, which is far more worst than the former.

 

修心法要(二)    
The Essence of Mind Training (II)
Compiled by Ven. Hai Tao

1.我们不需要担心行善是白费工夫,即使死后,我们所创造的功德仍会留在世上。
1. No need to worry that our good deeds will be fruitless.  Your merits last even after you die.

2.慈就是爱,佛陀希望我们拥有无量的慈。
2. Pure Love is Loving-kindness. As it was taught by the Buddha, let your kindness and love be boundless and borderless!

3.无论人们来自何处,我们都应该同样关心,无论亲疏远近,都应该给予相同的爱。
3. Love and care about others equally -  without any discrimination.

4.如果生活缺少法,我们就和动物没有两样。
4. Without Dharma, we will be no different from animals.

5.“戒是宝”,一切财富与享用皆源自戒律。
5. Precepts are jewels from which all one’s wealth and enjoyment manifest

6.身体是从戒律出生的财富,但是我们却看不见这些财富。
6. The precious human body is a result from upholding pure precepts, yet we often fail to see the value of this Abundance.

7.不要急著想解决别人的问题,先审视自己的问题。
7. Don’t rush to tackle other people’s problems if you cannot even solve our own ones.

8.远离没有意义的活动,积极行善。
8. Stay away from meaningless activities, practice kindness didligently!

9.尚未生起的善法,要努力令它生起;已生起的恶法,即使只有一点点,也要努力断除。
9. Cultivate the ingenerated virtue and eliminate even a little tiny vice.

10.八正道的每一支都离不开戒、定、慧,只能从这里面去寻找。
10. The Eightfold Noble Path is accessible only through the Three Learning of Precepts, Meditation and Wisdom, The Three Learning is the only Way that leads to the Eightfold Noble Path.

11.修禅是创造解脱之因的捷径。
11. Meditation is a quickest path to liberation.

12.当戒、定、慧一起运作时,当下你就能看见呼吸、感受、心与法。
12. When you skillfully integrate Precepts, Meditation and Wisdom, you can then clearly perceive your own breathing and feeling, including your mind and all its phenomena.

13.禅定的意思是指心稳固不动,并且以正念正知,随时保持心的稳定。
13. Meditation refers to a mind state which is stable and immovable, sustained and sealed by  mindfulness and awareness.

14.“内观”,它是对事物清楚而如实的认识,这是最高层次的平静。
14. Insight meditation means that we can clearly perceive the world and its phenomena as they are, without any fabrication. This is Ultimate Peace in its highest state.

15.我们停止的只是禅坐的形式,而非禅修。
15. What we stop sitting, just abandon the forms, but continue your meditation whatever you do.

16.修行有连贯性,那就像是水滴,而非滔滔不绝的流水,无法维持均衡的正念。
16. Continue your spiritual practices consistently, just like the constant-falling drops instead of the flash flood – though it is powerful yet fleeting, as a result of which mindfulness is unable to last.

17.内心的禅定不一定需要禅坐的形式。
17. Inner Meditation does not necessary depend upon Outer Sitting.

18.了解心的平静是什么,才是正确的修行之道。
18. A Peaceful Mind is the Key to correct practice.

19.只有不美的东西,才需要掩饰与装扮,人们试图把不美与不净的东西,装扮成好看一点。
19. Only the ugly things needs pretensions and adornment, hence it is a big joke of RasionaLIESation when you try too hard to beautify and hide the impurities.

20. 如果我们如实觉知乐与苦,我们就知道法。
20. We know what the Dharma is when we are aware of joy and suffering as what they really are.

 

修心法要(三)    
The Essence of Mind Training (III)
Compiled by Ven. Hai Tao

1.我们被世间所依赖的装饰与美化所欺骗。
1. We are often fooled by the outer world which has been artificially decorated and beautified.

2.每一件事都经过包装,让原本不美的事物变得吸引人,这就是迷惑的因。
2. Everything is but make-believe, turning the
ugly attractive, from which the delusion results.

3.专注于生起的现象,并看著它消失,但是不要以为它就此结束了,不要自满。
3. Concentrate on the appearance of a thing and see its disappearance through, but don’t be so arrogant as to think that it has already come to an end.

4.有些人的修行似乎很平顺,没有什么障碍与苦难,这是他们前世的业报。
4. Some people seem to be quite lucky on their way of cultivation, without many obstacles and hardships.  That’s because they had planted good karma in their previous lifetimes.

5.一个有智慧的人,不需要事事都要求完美,重点在于看破并放下世间的假象,以获得解脱。
5. For a wise person, the ability to see through the illusion of the mundane world and let go of it to gain liberation is more important than to be perfect in everything.

6.当你不再被迷惑时,就可以解脱表相的束缚。
6. When you are not fooled by the seeming, you are no longer confined by it.

7.心就只是心,它不是个人、实体或自我,这就称为心的觉醒。
7. When you realized that mind is just a mind, that it does not designate a specific person, an entity or a ‘Self”, you have attained the awakening of the mind.

8.所谓的观或思惟,都要用到想的功能去看事情,但是最后你会超越思想,产生洞见。
8. Both visualization and contemplation apply the function of thinking, but eventually one will go beyond the level of mere thinking and gain insights.

9.真正的智慧是看破与放下,不会有纠缠。
9. True wisdom is to be found in the ability to penetrate and then let go without attachment.

10.本心潜藏在每个人里面,每个人也都有“觉知者”。
10. Within everyone contains the true nature of Mind as well as the enlightened Quality.

11.穷追不舍的发问,无法让你了解实相,你需要自己去体悟。
11. Absolute Reality is to be realized and proved through diligent practices, not through persistent questionings.

12.往话语指出的方向去观察,而不要陷在话里。
12. Think beyond the meaning of the words.

13.心入定时,没有思想,定中只有观照。
13. When the mind is in a state of deep meditation (*Samadhi), there will be no thinking but only contemplation –you just perceive.

14.无论发生什么事,都以无常的认知,随它们去。
14. Whatever happens, let it flow away with the view of impermanence.
15.没有什么东西是永恒的,空即是一切,那就是实相。
15. Nothing lasts; and everything is marked by emptiness. That is the Absolute Reality.

16.当现象生起时,你持续坚壁清野;当事物净空时,你便维持等舍之心。
16. When a phenomenon arises, keep your mind solid and clear; when the phenomenon dissolves, stay in a mind of equanimity.

17.思想只是概念与想像的产物,如果我们没有充分觉知,就会误将它视为智慧。
17. Without full awareness, discursive thoughts will be mistaken as wisdom. In actuality, they are merely the creation of one’s conception and imagination.

18.不要以为智慧遥不可及,只要有概念的地方,就有智慧。
18. Wisdom is not something far-off and inaccessible; you can always find it within any concept.

 

修心法要(四)    
The Essence of Mind Training (IV)
Compiled by Ven. Hai Tao

1.解释得愈多,我们就离实相愈远。
1. You are more further away from the Absolute Reality when you are trying hard in fabricating more and more theoretical explanation.

2.没有贪著,痛苦就无从依附,智慧在一切情况下都会生起。
2. When you are free from attachment, suffering will end and the wisdom shall arise spontaneously.
 
3.修行:先从打好地基开始,做一个正直与诚实的人;其次,对于恶行具有惭愧心;第三,保持谦卑,少欲知足。
3. In terms of spiritual practice,  being an honest and upright person is the masis.  What follows are a heart of repentance as well as humility and contentment.

4.真实的修行不累,因为它是透过心去完成。
4. What does tiredness have to do with it since authentic spiritual practice is but a matter of the training of the mind?

5.一个业正在受报时,另一个业就会蛰伏著。我们现在受的是过去的业果,而非现在的业报。
5. When one karmic result is being repaid, another will remain latent.  What we enjoy or suffer now is the karmic results from the past instead of current ones.

6.“蚊子有什么用?”如果站在蚊子的立场想:“人有什么用?”
6. “What’s the use of mosquitoes?” said mankind.  “What’s the use of mankind?” mosquitoes replied.

7.未有河流如渴爱。
7. Wild as rivers can’t beat the power of desire.

8.贪欲不是嘴巴或胃,它们无法被满足。
8. Greed can’t be gratified by mouth or stomach.

9.忍耐是诸法之母。
9. Tolerance is mother to all kinds of Dharma Practice.

10.如来只是指出道路的人。
10. The Thatagatha (Enlightened One) is merely the one who shows you the right path.

11.当我们真的拥有明亮的电灯时,心却反而被遮蔽。
11. A bright light can’t disperse the darkness of the mind.

12.方便会障蔽心灵,因为人们对于容易得到的东西会觉得理所当然。
12. Skillful Means may obstruct one’s mind, as people tend to take it for granted.

13.太舒适只会让你变得散漫,人们还想更方便,但是却永远无法满足。
13. Too much comfort brings only sluggishness and dissatisfaction.

14.当房子一团乱时,我们可能会觉得很不舒服,并起身打扫与清洗。但是心黯淡与抑郁时,我们却看不到,还埋怨悲惨的处境。
14. We can’t bear the mess in our room and will thus clean it up right away.  Yet we often failed to see the mess of our mind,  and even continue to complain about our miserable situation.

15.多数的事情都只是假象,我们却执著这些错误与不确定的事物为真实。
15. Out of attachment, we mistakenly view numerous illusions and errors as reality.

16.佛陀说不知道对错的人,可以教他们知道;但是知道却不照做的人,就无可救药了。那些人被称为放逸者,无法受教。
16. For the ignorant, you can teach them the rights and the wrongs, but for those who never practice what they have learnt, you can teach nothing since they are un-teachable.

17.修行人,虽然形式有所不同,但是做的事是一样的。
17. The goal is the same for all the practitioners, albeit the various forms and methods.

18.日夜无情地流逝,我们是否善用时间?
18. Time passes by relentlessly.  Did we utilize it skillfully?

19.我们都想断除烦恼,但是我们认识烦恼吗?
19. We all want to eradicate our afflictions, but do we even know what they look like?

20. 快乐与痛苦出现时,智慧就可能在那时生起。
20. Wisdom is likely to sprout where there are happiness and suffering.

 

修心法要(五)    
The Essence of Mind Training (V)
Compiled by Ven. Hai Tao

1.有正见的地方,就有平静。不知道这点,即使独居也静不下来。
1. Peace is not to be achieved through solitude but through Right View.

2.我们应该抱著自修与独居的心态,与人共住。
2. In relating to others, keep an attitude of self-awareness and solitude.

3.如果有人说话刺伤了我们,我们只要如实觉知即可。
3. When people hurt us with their speeches, we just aware pf it as it is.


4.所谓进到法里,就是向内观心。
4. Contemplate the  inner nature of your Mind, you can then entering into the stream of Dharma.

5.如果我们真的在修行,则住处、食物、衣服与药物等必需品都会不请自来。
5. Necessities such as residence, food, clothes, and medicine come naturally to those who are truly engaged in their spiritual practices.

6.我们不须要囤积东西,如果我们修行得好,就一定会有资粮。
6. there’s no need to hoard up things, for if we practice well, resourcefulness awaiting there abundantly.
 
7.如果我们能转而内观,就会了解我们自己的生与死和树没有两样。
7. observe inwardly, you will realize that our life and death is the same as the trees.

8.佛性,亦即内心清明的觉知,会带领我们观察与觉悟一切法。
8. Buddha nature is merely our inner Clarity and Awareness, from which we will realize the ultimate nature of everything.

9.开悟就是如实觉知事物的本质。
9. Enlightenment means to realize the true nature of all phenomena.

10.我们因为渴爱而迷失,被现象愚弄,因此而感到痛苦。
10. Our desire makes us blind to see the reality, from which our pain results.

11.自然的本质不是什么神秘的事情,在自然中,事物出生、改变,然后结束。
11. There is nothing mysterious about Nature, where everything arises, changes, and then ceases.

12.正见与邪见都是出自同一个觉察。
12. Right view and Deviated one all originated from the same perception.

13.心不应该陷入善或恶的模糊地带,因为那会成为欢乐与悲伤的因。
13. Free your mind from the polarity of good and bad, or they will decide your joy and sorrow.

14.世俗之人经常在追求欢乐,他们习惯对迷人与讨厌的事物,做出极端的反应,并且一直在这两端之间,来回摆荡,无法止息。
14. In pursuit of pleasure, not only the mundane people react extremely according to their likes and dislikes, but they also cannot stop themselves from vacillating between the two.

15.平静之人,他们了解什么是看似平静,实际却不平静的方式。
15. A person of Peace look beyond artificial and apparent Peace-fullness, which in reality, a chaos in disguise.

16.烦恼就是水,行者的心则是荷叶,它们互相接触,荷花不需要回避水,但是仍然彼此分开。
16. Affliction is like water, while the practitioner’s mind is like the lotus leaves. Separating  the flower from the water, they still allow it to be rooted from it,

17.得与失、毁与誉、称与讥、苦与乐,合称世间八法。如果人的内心跟著这些事情走,受到它们摆布,那就称为俗世与俗人。
17. Gain and loss, honor and disgrace, praise and censure, pleasure and suffering are called the Eight Worldly Winds.  If we have our nose led by them, we are very worldly indeed.

18.八正道与世间八法是一对的,这两条道路相互重叠,而非分属不同领域。
18. The Eightfold Noble Path and the Eight Worldly Winds are inter-related, like two roads overlapping, not two different fields.

19.佛教的奥义是坚持戒律,戒律源自于内心的动机。
19. The gist of Buddhism is to Pure Precepts, which is the origin of one’s motivation.

 

修心法要(六)   
The Essence of Mind Training (VI)
Compiled by Ven. Hai Tao

1.当烦恼出现时,世间八法压抑并遮蔽了八正道。
1. When the afflictions come into play, the Eight Worldly Winds obstruct the Eightfold Noble Path and take the upper hand.

2.当我们以戒、定、慧调伏身、口、意时,很快就会看见藏在心中的世间法。
2. When we curb our body, speech and mind by means of precepts, meditation and wisdom, we can easily detect our worldly-motivations.

3.藉由修行,恢复心的潜能之后,我们就能看见世间与它的起源。
3. Restoring our mental potential through spiritual practices, we will perceive the Universe and its origin.

4.如果我们根据欲望行事,永远没有结束的一天。
4. If we act on desire, there will be no end of it.

5.修行的内涵就是努力对抗折磨我们的事。
5. The substance of spiritual practice is to fight bravely what torments us.

6.修行真的必须依靠稳定与忍耐。
6. Dharma Practices in real sense are stability and patience.

7.唯有当心觉醒时,我们才会真的了解三宝。
7. A real understanding of the Triple Jewels comes with the awakening of the mind.

8.因为心的觉醒而得到真正的皈依,无论身在何处,佛、法、僧都会与我们相随。
8. When we go for real refuge with an awakened mind, the Buddha, Dharma, and the Sangha (the Triple Jewels) will be with us wherever we are.

9.如果了解事物的实相,我们就不会演出兴奋、得意、悲伤与流泪等戏码。
9. If we perceive the true nature of all phenomena, we will then abandon all Dramas of  excited-ness, pride, sadness and tears…

10.平静是真正的快乐,这是透过见到实相与根除贪染而获得。
10. True happiness is Peace, a state of mind achieved through perceiving the Absolute Reality and freedom from Desire.

11.因为懒惰习气的缘故,我们必须精进;因为缺乏决心与刚毅的精神,所以我们需要忍耐与自制。
11. Adopt Diligence to counteract laziness, and tolerance as well as self-discipline as antidotes of lack of resolution and unyielding spirit.

12.当一个人觉知时他就会自动出离与放下重担。
12. In a state of Awareness, one will have genuine Renunciation and naturally let go of all burdens.

13.有疑惑者与没有疑惑者之间,没有什么好争辩的。
13. There should be no dispute between a doubtful person and an awaken one.
 
14.结束疑的智慧来自实修,而不是对他人的发问。
14. Only through genuine practices we can gain wisdom that clarify all doubts, questioning others will never reach the goal.

15.疑会因为不屈不挠地修行,而在梵行者的心中耗尽。
15. Persistent practice will clear –off all doubts in your mind.

16.无论发生什么事,把它捡起来,检视它,看清楚。
16. Whatever happens, pick it up, observe it, see properly!

17.当正念有足够的力量观照时,它会让心明亮起来,并且让智慧更加清晰。
17. When you gain strength in your practice of mindfulness, it will light up your mind and sharpen your wisdom..
18.安住在正见,无论身处何处,都能安心。
18. A Peaceful Mind is with those who hold proper views.

19.想要快速了解事情不是法,它只是我们的欲望。
19. A wish to quickly grasp the points of things is about one’s desire, not about Dharma.
