Troubled past

Ever since the Civil War, the South has struggled to find ways to deal with its troubled past. 自从美国内战以来，美国南方一直在设法处理过去遗留下来的麻烦事。（P43，Unit 16 人教高二英语）

根据Longman Dictionary的解释，troubled作形容词，主要有三个意思：

1. worried or anxious 如：
troubled face/eyes/look 忧虑的脸/眼神/表情
Benson looked troubled when he heard the news. 当本森看听到这个消息的时候，他看起来很忧虑。

2. having many problems 如：
These are troubled times for the coal industry.  这对煤炭工业来说是它麻烦的时期。
Greg had a troubled childhood. 格雷格有一个不幸的童年。

the troubled electronics company 麻烦不断的电子公司
troubled marriage/relationship 有问题的婚姻/关系

troubled times 乱世

3. troubled waters a difficult situation, especially where there is a lot of disagreement and problems 如：
We don't want to enter the troubled waters of race and religion. 我们不想趟种族与宗教这混水。
pour oil on troubled waters (=try to make an angry situation calmer) 给混水加油，即火上浇油，搅混水

fish in troubled waters [喻]浑水摸鱼, 趁火打劫

有一首英文歌叫Bridge over Troubled Water，有人译作《忧愁河上的桥》，实际上这是双关，troubled water可指“波涛汹涌的河”也可指“一团乱麻似的生活”。
