No matter what life throws our way, personal growth never stops. It comes from within, and needs only to be challenged in order to surface. It is entirely possible to step out of one’s comfort zone to learn something new.

An awareness of self

To live an aware life, the individual must begin with an awareness of self. He must conduct a running examination and periodic reexaminations of the self-in language, the medium of farthest reaches, deepest diving, and most complicated windings. The sorting might well begin with the ordinary, everyday experience of life. A diary or journal enables one to examine and evaluate experience, as well as to come to understand them and their significance—or insignificance. Most of us do this examination and evaluation in moments of dreaming or in that state of mental wandering just before sleep. There is some (even great) advantage, however, in subjecting ourselves to confusing and the poorly defined give way to the specific, the firm, and the clearly formulated.

For writing is discovery. The language that never leaves our head is like colorful yarn, which endlessly spins out multicolored threads dropping into emptiness, momentarily compacted, entangled, fascinating, and elusive. We have glimpses that seem brilliant but quickly fade; we catch sight of images that tease us with connections and patterns that too-soon flow on; we hold in momentary view a comprehensive arrangement(insight) that dissolves rapidly and disappears.

Writing that is discovery forces the capturing, the retrieving, and the bringing into focus these stray and random thoughts. Examining them we form ideas that are as much about the self as about language. Indeed, writing is largely a process of choosing among alternatives from the images and thoughts of the endless flow, and this choosing is the matter of making up one’s mind, and this making up one’s self. In this way writing that is honest and genuine and serious constitutes the discovery of the self.

Develop and fulfill one’s life发展自我,完善自我

I will practice perseverance more often, and never give up a thing because it was hard or inconvenient. If we want light, we must conquer darkness. Perseverance can sometimes equal genius in its results. “There are only two creatures,” says a proverb, “who can surmount the pyramids – the eagle and the snail.”

I will school myself into a habit of attention; I will not let anything come between me and the subject in hand. I will remember that a good skater never tries to skate in two directions at once. The habit of attention becomes part of our life, if we begin early enough. I often hear grown-up people say, “I could not fix my attention on the lecture or book, although I wished to do so,” and the reason is, the habit was not formed in youth.

I will pay more attention to the cultivation of the memory. I will strengthen that faculty by every possible means, and on every possible occasion. It takes a little hard work at first to remember things accurately; but memory soon helps itself, and gives very little trouble. It only needs early cultivation to become a power.

I will look on the cheerful side. Life is very much like a mirror: if you smile upon it, it smile back upon you; but if you frown and look doubtful on it, you will get a similar look in return.

Inner sunshine warms not only the heart of the owner, but of all that come in contact with it. “Who shuts love out, in turn shall be shut from love.”

I will school myself to say “No” more often. I might write pages on the importance of learning very early in life to gain that point where a young boy can stand erect, and decline doing an unworthy act because it is unworthy.

I will demand of myself more courtesy towards my companions and friends and indeed towards strangers as well. The smallest courtesies along the rough roads of life are like the little birds that sing to us all winter long, and make that season of ice and snow more endurable.

Finally, instead of trying hard to be happy, as if that were the sole purpose of life, I will try still harder to make others happy.

Our family creed

They are the principles on which my wife and I have tried to bring up our family. They are principles in which my father believed and by which he governed his life. They are the principles, many of them, which I learned at my mother’s knee.

They point the way to usefulness and happiness in life, to courage and peace in death.

If they mean to you what they mean to me, they may perhaps be helpful also to our sons for their guidance and inspiration.

Let me state them:这些信条叙述如下:

I believe in the supreme worth of the individual and in his right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

I believe that every right implies a responsibility; every opportunity, an obligation; every possession, a duty.

I believe that the law was made for man and not man for the law; that government is the servant of the people and not their master.

I believe in the dignity of labor, whether with head or hand; that the world owes no man a living but that it owes every man an opportunity to make a living.

I believe that thrift is essential to well ordered living and that economy is a prime requisite of a sound financial structure, whether in government, business or personal affairs.

I believe that truth and justice are fundamental to an enduring social order.

I believe in the sacredness of a promise, that a man’s word should be as good as his bond, that character – not wealth or power or position – is of supreme worth.

I believe in an all-wise and all-loving God, named by whatever name, and that the individual’s highest fulfillment, greatest happiness and widest usefulness are to be found in living in harmony with His will.

I believe that love is the greatest thing in the world; that it alone can overcome hate; that right can and will triumph over might.

Some meanings of authentic love

Love means that I know the person I love. I’m aware of the many sides of the other person—not just the beautiful side but also the limitations, inconsistencies and flaw.

Love means having respect for the dignity of the person I love. If I love you, I can see you as a separate person, with your own values and thoughts and feelings, and I do not insist that you surrender your identity and conform to an image of what I expect you to be for me.

Love means having a responsibility toward the person I love. If I love you, I’m responsive to most of your major needs as a person.

Love means growth for both myself and the person I love. If I love you, I’m growing as a result of my love. You are a stimulant for me to become more fully what I might become, and my loving enhances your being as well.

Love means making a commitment to the person I love. This commitment does not entail surrendering out total selves to each other; nor does not it imply that the relationship is necessarily permanent. It does entail a willingness to stay with each other in times of pain, uncertainty, struggle, and despair, as well as in times of calm and enjoyment.

Love means trusting the person I love. If I love you, I trust that you will accept my caring and my love and that you won’t deliberately hurt me. I trust the reciprocal nature of our love.

Love can tolerate imperfection. In a love relationship there are times of boredom, times when I may feel like giving up, times of real strain, and times I experience an impasse. Authentic love does not imply enduring happiness. I can stay during rough times, however, because I can remember what we had together in the past, and I can picture what we will have together in our future if we care enough to face our problems and work them through.

Love is freeing. Love is freely given, not doled out on demand. Authentic love is not given with strings attached. There is an unconditional quality about love.

Mature love is union under the condition of preserving one’s integrity, one’s individuality. In love this paradox occurs that two beings become one and yet remain two.

Don’t ever save anything for a special occasion. Every day you’re alive is a special occasion.

Whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experience of savor, not endure. I’m trying to recognize these moments now and cherish them.

If it’s worth seeing or heating of doing, I want to see and hear and to it now.

When someone takes the chance and reaches out, everyone wins.

If you want to be a more peaceful person you must understand that being right is almost never more important that allowing yourself to be happy. The way to be happy is to let go, and reach out. Let other people be right. This doesn’t mean that you’re wrong. Everything will be fine. You’ll experience the peace of letting go, as well as the joy of letting others be tight. You’ll also notice that, as you reach out and let others be “right”, they might even reach back. But, if for some reason they don’t, that’s okay too. You will have the inner satisfaction of knowing that you have done your part to create a more loving world, and certainly you’ll be more peaceful yourself.

The smile—the unaffected, unplanned, natural connection between people. I really believe that if that part of you and that part of me could recognize each other, we wouldn’t be enemies. We couldn’t have hate or envy or fear.

Good advice to help you live happily

It is okay to make mistakes

Making mistakes is something we all do, and I am still a fine and worthwhile person when I make them. There is no reason for me to get upset when I make a mistake. I am trying, and if I make a mistake, I am going to continue trying. It is okay for others to make mistakes, too. I will accept mistakes in myself and also mistakes that others make.

Everybody doesn’t have to love me并非人人都得爱我

Not everybody has to love me or even like me. I don’t necessarily like everybody, I know, so why should everybody else like me? I enjoy being liked and being loved, but if somebody doesn’t like me, I will still be okay and still feel like I am an okay person.

I don’t have to control things

I will survive if things are different than what I want them to be. I can accept things the way they are, accept people the way they are, and accept myself the way I am. There is no reason to get upset if I can’t change things to fit my idea of how they ought to be. There is no reason why I should have to like everything. Ever if I don’t like it, I can live with it.

I am responsible for my day我对自己的每一天负责

I am responsible for how I feel and what I do. Nobody can make me feel anything. If I have a rotten day, I am the one who allows it to be that way. If I have a great day, I am the one who deserves credit for being positive.

I can be flexible

There is more than one way to do something. more than one person has had good ideas that will work. There is no one and only “best” way. Everybody has ideas that are worthwhile. Some may make more sense to me than others, but everyone’s ideas are worthwhile, and everyone has something worthwhile to contribute.
