Portfolio Underway(1)

想来想去,闭门造车总不是一个好主意。习惯性并且阶段性的陷入思维上的僵局,自己有时候也不知道怎么解套,尤其是尝试了几种方法之后效果不佳,于是做下去的热情也开始消减。所以,还是应该听听经验丰富的人们的建议。

I realize that making the portfolio alone could be a very terrible idea. I always have troubles in some stages of designing and having tried several methods feeding back rather bad result, my passion on the mission is fading. Therefore, I think it quite necessary to hear from somebody experienced. (What's this? I plan to invite Peter maybe some other guys that have trouble in reading Chinese to visit this blog, so...)

Folding Structure Study: Bridge Design

提到折叠的主题,也是偶然在于洋的提醒之下。由于一些我自己没有意识到的原因,我的设计在这方面似乎比较有表现力,于是建议我试试看这么走。

而我们在二年级时期的合作设计步行桥就运用了日本折纸作为原型。于是我放下手边的候车室,先再次研究这个东西。

I began to get interested in folding structure because of the reminding of Alan Yu. He saw some habbit of mine that fit this theme and suggested I could go this way.

Luckily, the Bridge task we did in the 2nd year was inspired by Origami, the Japanese folding art. Thus I ceased what I am doing and started to study on this, again.

在EPFL的Hani Buri的研究中,总结了三种折纸能为结构之所用,这是其中之一,称为钻石模式

In the thesis of Hani Buri from EPFL, 3 main patterns that can be manifested in structure are mentioned. One of them is Diamond Pattern as the picture above.

其二,人字形模式

The second pattern, the Herringbone Pattern. 

而第三种模式还没进行尝试,以后会出现。

The third one, the Diagnal Pattern is still not practiced, so maybe it will appear later. 

 

由于EPFL的研究最终落实到建筑上是解决屋顶和围护结构的问题,相对而言作为桥的结构出现就算个有点新的玩艺儿了。而问题就在于不仅要解决承载力的问题,还有结构与人交互的问题。在这方面,个人觉得以桥的形式运用折叠结构出现的问题会大于屋顶,主要来源就是人的参与。

As the research in EPFL finally concern the strategy of making a roof and enclosure, it is relatively new to make it as a bridge. The point is that not only the dynamic problem but also the interaction between structure and people should be concerned. In my opinion it could be harder to deal with this kind of problem in the bridge than that in the roof structure, because people are involved actually.

 

关于结构原型,我是想操作这三个模式,有一些可以做到深入,而有一些可能在某个阶段就会出现源源不断的问题而搁置。也许我是想表现这种研究的状态,呵呵。

About the structure patterns, I would like to deal with all the 3. Some would be more close to finish and some other could be just like a brief study. Perhaps I am willing to show this kind of status of researching :D

目前手中的工作,是钻石模式,也就是二年级操作的结构原型。

And now, I'm going with the Diamond Pattern, the pattern that we used in the 2nd year.

经过考虑,我认为单纯的对称结构在空间丰富性上有一定的局限性,所以我尝试了改变其折痕的交点来取消其对称性。

I regard the symetric structure would have shortage in spatial diversity. So I try to drag the intersection point of tilted creases a little along the horizontal creases to overcome such shortage.

这样带来的结果,就是从横剖面上看,出现了高低的“峰”和“谷”,感觉有趣了些,怎么去运用还需要挖掘。

The result is, seeing through the section, the "peaks" and "valleys" diverse from one to another, which make it possible to create some more exciting spaces.

另一方面,二年级的时候我们就发现了板件存在的薄弱问题。这次,我打算用上下两种截然不同的方式去处理这个问题。

On the other hand, I try some new different ways to solve the problem of the weakness of the panels we found in the 2nd year.

在上表面,由于和人的交互性关系,加强的构件依然定义为和结构一样的板面,并且要考虑与之后的表面空间利用结合,让一些有趣味的空间自然形成。

On the top surface, accounting the interaction, I define the structural reinforcements as still panels, which could be harnessed later as pragmatic elements.

在下表面,用很清爽的杆件作为加强构件。

On the surface beneath, sticks are used to clearly and directly show the braces. 

于是,一个剖面上看就是这样的状态

In the end, the section is like this:

渐渐接近卡壳的部分了。。。

顺水推舟地画出了有人体尺度的剖面(报告范老师,研究了尺度关系之后,我擅自将跨度调整到15m,10m的外部约束学生先放一放。。。)

So, we are approaching what annoys me.

Spontaneously I drew some sections with people. (And I have to inform Prof. Fan that I adjusted the span requirement from 10m to 15m because I find it more suitable for this structure.)

问题来了,这看上去是个挺激动人心的剖面,而实现这个剖面的办法,想了一下,或许是这样:

Here is the issue: the seemingly fascinating section is just an ideal section, and trying to figure out a way to realize it, I drew this plan:

平面上看似乎也还没什么问题

这下出事了,空余的坑坑洼洼的部分原本被认为在剖面上是那些美妙的供人坐下的地方。实际上,没有落脚点,边上的遮挡很压抑,与必要通行路径的冲突,还有一些安全隐患。

Well, the "craves" in the model are just what I drew something interesting in the section. Actually, no plenty spaces for placing the feet, collision with the pass path, and also some security trouble have revealed.

我觉得这样解决这个问题似乎是走死了,也许拿那些“三角形”面板来控制这些空间原本就不是个好主意。新的想法关注在剖面上。也或许剖面也是我给自己下的套?

So I think I went to the dead end in this way. Maybe it is not a good idea to use the "triangles" to materialize the sections in the drawing. Or maybe the idea of sections itself is none sense?
