Two days before I had joked to a young friend: I really am a person who has nothing to lose. I have no rights that can be taken away, no office that I can be dismissed from, no rank that I can tumble from, no fortune that can be siphoned off in fines. I really do have nothing to care for or worry about. There are no strings or ties to bind me. I can just get up and go whenever I please. Never did it occur to me that there might be something I didn’t know about, something that I was secretly yearning for day and night. It was something from which I could never break the connection. That something was home.

Life is neither all pleasure nor all pain. Pleasure and pain give birth to each other and complement each other. They put each other in focus.

Pleasure is a fleeting gossamer cloud, while pain is a lowering thunderhead that presses down on a city. There different types of clouds both gather on the horizon of one’s life, and enhance the beauty of the twilight.

There comes a time when life approaches its eventide. At such a time a person may become nostalgic and melancholy. But the life of mankind is everlasting, and the earth continues to revolve around the sun of its own accord.

When the east is no longer bright, light shines in the west.

《生命从十八岁开始》——冰心 life begins at eighty

After I fell ill, many friends wrote to me. Some of the letters were comforting, and some reproachful, saying, “now you will no longer be able to refuse to devote yourself to the aged!” I replied to one friend: “Confucius once said that he often felt that he did not know when old age would arrive, whereas I am in the position ofnot knowingthat I do not know that old age has already arrived.”

If one can’t rise above the crowd, he is buried for life. If he does rise above the crowd, he’d be like the spray on the crest of a wave, riding high to greet the light of the sun and the moon. He would be the hero who has achieved his ambition. Life is short. So one can take pride in even a passing moment of riding high, for it can count as an indication of a successful life.

But the universe is diverse. Some things in it are beautiful and others aren’t. Some people are talented and others aren’t. It takes thousands of skeletons to make a great general. That rank and file aren’t going to be heroes. In life, some ride in the sedan while others carry it on their shoulders. At a dinner, there’s the host, the guests, and then the servants who serve. There’s the man at the head of the table and the man who sits at the far end. In the kitchen, there’s the chef who cooks and the maid who tends the fire. Nature has created people of unequal talent; how can all be equal?

The higher the monkey climbs up the tree, the more he exposes the ugliness of his bald red behind.

Ancient Chinese have a saying: “he’s a man and so am I.” westerners have similar sayings. They say such things only to encourage people to strive, and not to give up trying. There’s a Spanish maxim: “you are what you do.” In other words, whether you’re looked up to or looked down upon depends not on your status, or your lineage, but on your achievements. We might add a comment: “the use you’re put to depends on the stuff you’re made of.” If you’re a turnip, try to be a crisp and juicy turnip. If you’re a cabbage, try to be a good tight cabbage. Turnips and cabbages are common household vegetables, so don’t try to be the precious fruits that are used in ceremonial sacrifice in temples. I’ve seen a tiny blue flower in clumps of grass and wondered if it was what westerners call the “forget-me-not.” It’s so tiny that it’s easily overlooked. But I think a tiny plant growing in the wild can put forth a tiny flower in gratitude to the sunshine and rain without asking others to “forget me not”. A line in a classical Chinese poem explains it: “flowers and trees have their own reason to grow. They need no beauty to pick them.”

Therefore naked truth should be somewhat covered. The blazing sunlight, which ruthlessly beats down on everything in the world, do not leave shadows that allow one to be mystified, to dream and to hope. Without light clouds and thin hazes sieving the sunshine and creating a colorful glow, how boring he sky would be!

Only in dimness and obscurity can one dream and give play to the imagination. Distance increases mystery. We are lost in a boundless remoteness, calling to mind mountains and rivers obscured in mist and clouds, stars on a dark night, the future in our hopes, a transcendental ideal, celebrities worshipped from afar, and a “friend” in one’s wishful thinking.
