Chapter eleven

1, the door is thrown open and the lights snapped on by a steward. A family wakes up from a sound sleep. 门忽然开了,服务员拧亮电灯,一家人从酣梦中醒来

Another steward is going from door to door along the hall, punching and yelling

另一个服务员正在大厅挨户喊叫,敲门

The deck is empty except for the crew, who are preparing the lifeboats. 甲板上不见乘客,只有船员在准备救生船

àsnap (open or close (sth) with a sudden sharp noise, (cause sth to)make a sudden sharp noise )打开或关闭并发出尖利声音,突然发出尖利声音 the box snapped open 箱子啪的一声打开了 the circus manager snapped his whip 马戏团主把鞭子抽得很响 she snapped her bag shut 她咔嚓一声把提包关闭了

(cause sth to)break suddenly with a sharp noise (使某物)断裂并发出尖利声音 he stretched the rubber band till it snapped 他把橡皮筋啪的一声拉断了 suddenly the branch that he was standing on snapped off 他踩着的熟知突然啪的一声折断了 –> 比喻 after years of hard work and poverty, he finally snapped 他多年劳累和贫困终因体力不支而病倒

à punch (strike sb/sth hard with the fist)用拳头猛击 punch a man on the chin 挥拳猛击男子下巴 he has a face I would love to punch 他有一张找抽的脸

à yell (out)(at sb/sth), (utter a loud sharp cry or cries as of pain, excitement, etc)号叫 stop yelling, cant you 不要嚷了,行不行 she yelled at her mischievous child 他对淘气的孩子大喊大叫 Yell out in anguish , terror, pain, 因苦恼,惊恐,疼痛等叫喊 yell with fear, agony, laughter 害怕,痛苦,笑得喊叫起来

2, a large number of First Class passengers have gathered near the staircase. They are getting indignant about the confusion

(Steward to Andrew) care of a drink, sir?

Andrews brushes past him

很多头等舱的乘客聚集在楼梯边,他们对这慌乱的场面愤愤不平

àIndignant: angry or scornful, esp at injustice or because of undeserved blame愤慨的,愤怒的(对不公正的,或冤屈的)she was most indignant with me when I suggested she might try a little harder 我建议她不妨再努力些,她竟大为恼火

He was terribly indignant at what he saw as false accusations。 他认为那些指责皆不属实,非常气愤

B,brush: touch (sb) lightly in passing 经过是触及 leaves brushing one’s cheeks 抚着面颊的树叶 his hand brushed hers他的手碰到她的手

Brush against /by/ past sb/sth (touch sb/sth lightly while moving close)接近时轻轻碰了 she brushed past him without saying a word他经过是碰了他一下,但是一句话也没有说

The cat brushed against her leg in the darkness黑暗中一只猫蹭了她的腿。

3,you have got us all trussed up and now we are cooling our heels. 叫我们穿上救生衣,现在我们等了半天了

It’s just the God damned English, doing everything by the book.

霍克利先生,说话干净点

à truss sth /sb (up) with sth (tie or bind sth/sb securely) 将某物、人捆绑好,束缚紧,系牢 truss a chicken, 把鸡扎好 the thieves had trussed the guard up with rose 盗贼用绳子把警卫捆了起来

4,please tell only who you must, I don’t want to be responsible for a panic请别告诉其他人,我不想引起恐慌

5,Lovejoy and Master at Arms are handcuffing Jack to a water pipe as a crewman rushes in and almost blurts to the Master at Arms

Over here, sir. They need you up in the second class Purser’s office. There is a big mob up there.

他们正在把杰克铐在一根水管上,忽然一个船员冲进来,急匆匆的对警卫说:到这来,先生,他们要你去二等舱行李房。有很多人涌到那里去了

à blurt sth out (say sth suddenly and tactlessly)脱口而出, he blurted out the bad news before I could stop him 我还没有来得及阻止,他已经脱口而出说出了这个坏消息

à mob (large disorderly crowd, esp on that has gathered to attack or cause mischief)无秩序的民众,尤其指报名 the fans rushed onto the pitch in an excited mob 球迷群情激昂,一窝蜂涌进球场

6,the Master at Arms tosses the handcuff to Lovejoy, then exits with the crewman. Lovejoy flips the key in the air and catches it.警卫把钥匙扔给了拉夫恰和船员退下,拉夫恰把钥匙抛向半空又把它接住

à flip (toss sth with a sharp movement of the thumb and forefinger so that it turns over in the air) 用拇指和食指捻(某物)使之在空中翻转

Flip a coin 捻硬币(抛向空中)

Flip sth over (turn sth over quickly)快速的翻转某物 flip the pages over 很快的翻着书页

Move sth with a quick sharp movement, flick)快速的移动某物 he flipped the light on

 

 

7,he puts a bullet on the desk and watches it roll across and fall off. He picks up the bullet

他把一颗子弹放在桌子上,看着子弹滚下去,又把它捡起来

8,she walks away through the crowd. Cal catches up to Rose and grabs her.

Where are you going? To him? To be a whore to a gutter rat?

I’d better be his whore than your wife. (She pulls free)

No, I said no. (He grabs her again. Rose spits in his face and runs away)

她挤过人群,卡尔追上她,拽住她

你到哪里去?去找他么?去做那个肮脏的老鼠的妓女?

我宁愿做他的妓女也不愿做你的妻子,她挣脱了

不行,我说不行。 他又拽住了她,露丝朝他的脸上吐了口水,跑开了

à gutter (channel at the )side of a road, next to the kerb 路边沟,排水沟,阴沟cigarette packets thrown into the gutter 扔在阴沟里的香烟盒

The gutter (比喻)poor or debased state of life 贫苦低级的生活the language of the gutter 粗鄙的语言 he picked her out of the gutter and made her a great lady他使她脱离贫苦生活,并成为贵妇

9, you have to get to a boat right away

No, I am doing this with or without your help. But without will take longer

你快点上救生船

不,不管有没有你的帮助,我都得去做,你不帮我,要找他会久些

10,sorry, miss. Lifts are closed.

(she grabs him and shoves him back into the lift.) I am through being polite, goddamnit!now take me down!! E-deck

(the operator fumbles to close the gate and start the lift)

à shove (push (sb/sth) roughly)乱推,乱挤,乱撞 a crowd pushing and shoving to get in 推推搡搡往里挤的人群 who shoved me 谁撞到我了he shoved her out of the way, 他把她退到了一遍 the policeman shoved me aside 警察把我挤到了一边

(infml)(put sth casually in a place)随意将某物放到某处 shove papers away in a drawer 把文件往抽屉里胡乱一塞 where shall I put the case? Shove it on top of the car 我把箱子放在哪里?先放在汽车顶上吧

à Fumble (touch or handle sth awkwardly or nervously)笨拙或者紧张的摸索或处理 he fumbled the ball and then dropped it 他笨手笨脚的漏接了球

Fumble at/for/with sth (use the hands awkwardly in doing sth or in search of sth)笨手笨脚地做某事或寻找某物 fumble in one’s pocket for some coins 笨手笨脚在口袋里摸索几枚硬币

She fumbled with her notes and began to speak 他手忙脚乱的翻找讲稿,然后开始讲话

Fumble for the light switch 摸索电灯开关 fumble for the right thing to say 笨嘴笨舌的寻找适当话题

11,the life car has handed in a foot of freezing water. She claws the door open and splashes out.

电梯停在冷水浸泡的地面,露丝波开门,冲了出去

She runs back, locating the right door, then pushes it open. She splashes over Jack and kisses him她跑回来,认准房门,推开,奔向杰克,吻他

à claw (try to(scratch or tear sb/sth with a claw or claws or with one’s finger-nails)(试图)用爪子或指甲抓或撕某人、物体,搔,扰,刮 the cats clawed at each other 猫用爪子互相抓 the prisoner clawed at the cell door in desperation 囚犯绝望的乱抓牢房的房门 his face was badly clawed 他的脸给抓坏了

Claw one’s way across , up, through (move across ,etc by using the claws or the hands)用爪子或手爬过去 they slowly clawed their way up the cliff 他们缓慢的爬上了峭壁

à splash across, along, away , through, etc (move across, etc with a splashing noise)带着泼溅声走过等 we splashed (our way)across the stream 我们哗啦哗啦的淌过小河

She splashed through the puddles 他哗哗的淌过水坑

12,how did you find I did not do it?

I did not. I just realized I already knew.

The lights flicker and go out, leaving utter darkness. Then they come back on.

灯忽明忽暗,终于熄灭,一会儿又亮了

à flicker (of a light or flame)burn or shine unsteadily (灯光或火焰)闪烁,摇曳,all the lights flickered for a moment 所有的灯都闪了一下

比喻 (of an emotion)be felt or seen briefly 感情稍纵即逝 a slender hope still flickered within him 他心中仍有一丝希望 a faint smile flickered across her face 脸上闪现过一丝微笑

13,he punches him squarely in the nose, he lets her go and staggers back.

她狠狠打中他的鼻子,他松手后退

At the stairwell, the water has flooded the bottom five steps. She takes off her heavy dress, and plunges into the chest-high water, and goes forward.

在阶梯处,水已经漫过了五级台阶。她脱去重重的外衣,投入齐胸的水中,向前走去
