Ceramics is an independent school of modern plastic arts that not only combines expression_r_r_r of form and the beauty of glaze and color, it creates a style that more accurately passes on the ceramic artist’s own ideas and artistic pursuits, becoming the carrier of personal feelings and thoughts. The expressive vocabulary of ceramics reflects the contemporary environment. With the qualitative material and spiritual changes of modern people, innovations have constantly appeared and well developed. Modern Taiwanese ceramics had its early period in the 1970s. Through the diligent promotion of early period ceramic artists, ceramics flourished and there were many examples of great works in international exhibitions. Since ceramics artists still had not received appropriate attention domestically, this museum held eight “R.O.C. Ceramics Biannual Exhibitions” from 1986 to 1998 to promote modern ceramics creative styles, and also held the “R.O.C. National Modern Ceramics Invitational Exhibition” in 2006. This year, we invite international ceramics master Mr. Wang Jun Wen to hold a featured artist exhibition in this museum in the hopes that this museum can be an exchange platform for the ceramics world, expanding the domestic arts field of vision, encouraging creativity, and founding a new scene for modern Taiwan ceramics.

Mr. Wang Jun Wen, known as the “father of liquid in liquid separation,” was born in Taipei in 1956, and is currently a U.S. citizen and resident. Mr. Wang is one of the most famous ceramics artists alive today. His works have immense influence and tons of admirers at home and abroad. In 1995, Mr. Wang uncovered the secret of Song Dynasty Jian Kiln black glaze, creating seven kinds of unprecedented separated glaze colors. In 1997, he made the cover of America’s authoritative Ceramics Monthly magazine, becoming the first Chinese to receive this honor in 50 years, which shows his status and impact in the world of ceramics.

With his passion for antiques and ceramics, when Mr. Wang Jun Wen is not working, he starts collecting ceramic artworks. When he was 35, he resolutely changed professions and entered the world of firing ceramics. He completely finished with first place honors from San Diego Mesa College’s advanced ceramics expert class, and his creativity and research received international recognition. At San Diego Mesa College he held the position of convener for Dr. John Conrad’s expert research group, following the research of world enamel authority Dr. Conrad. After seven years of diligent research in Taiwan, China, and the U.S.A., he finally uncovered the secret of Song Dynasty Jian Kiln black glaze, reproducing the peerless style of liquid in liquid separated glazes. It can be said that he is a pioneer and a revivalist of contemporary ceramics, and he is generous with his glaze formulas, answering any questions. This has cemented his status as a ceramics master and a transmitter of Chinese traditional ceramics culture.

Mr. Wang has received the Most Valuable Prize from the U.S. International Ceramics Exhibition, and has had an unprecedented number of featured artist exhibitions at the U.S. Ceramics Museum, making him Asia’s first ceramics artist to have exhibitions in this U.S. museum. To honor his leading position in international ceramics glaze research, the U.S. Ceramics Museum gave him the title of U.S. enamel authority. His works have been collected in almost 20 major museums around the world, including the British Museum, the U.S. National Gallery of Art, and the U.S. Ceramics Museum.

The expression_r_r_r of Mr. Wang’s glaze colors is based on abstract aesthetics. All kinds of glazing techniques give the glaze color countless gorgeous displays through different strong and weak reductions and high and low temperatures. Each type of glaze color flows naturally with many levels as if it was made by nature, revealing an irresistible beauty! This art that blends earth and fire represents Mr. Wang’s lifelong goal to make ceramic works that naturally produce an unlimited charm.

This exhibition includes Mr. Wang’s early period ceramic works that he diligently produced abroad, and shows the creations of his liquid in liquid separated glazes period, as well as his recent artworks that mix in the vocabulary of religion. The recent period’s joyful dancing Bodhisattvas and solemn religious objects express his awareness of mud and life, passing on his personal clarity, respect, sincerity, joy, and gratitude, manifesting the infinite value in ceramics. I personally represent the national Museum of History in anticipation of a successful exhibition, and expect that more domestic ceramics artists will be able to earn a place at the table of international ceramics through the expression_r_r_r of their creativity.
