                                                   Chapter Six       Mothers of Invention

I’m sitting at the kitchen table, going through the mail, when I hear the rustling of a plastic bag under the sink, the precise spot where my mother first met the mouse. I have moved the trash bag to the outside of the cupboard, where it hangs from a drawer pull, to keep it out of the mouse’s reach and to avoid my having to open the cupboard door for fear of what I might find inside. The trash can still has a plastic bag in it, although, as the mouse will soon discover, it is empty.

I get up and tiptoe toward the cupboard. Along the way I grab a dish towel off the back of a chair—a weapon strikes me as a good idea—and motion to our dog Rick to stick close behind me. Rick gives me a bored look, exhales, and drops his head back to the floor.

I’m not typically a quick study, but this time I cobble together a plan to deal with the mouse in the few seconds it takes for me to travel the eight or nine feet from my chair to the cupboard door. I envision the scene unfolding like this: I will open the door, slowly pull the trash can toward me, and then throw the towel over the mouse to disorient it.Then I will grab the trash can, rush toward the back door, throw it open, and heave the whole business out into the backyard, producing such a harrowing experience for the mouse that it will flee the premises and never return.

I execute step one as planned and nudge open the door. Next I cautiously grip the rim of the can and ease it toward me, the towel clutched in my free hand. I peer over the edge into the interior of the white plastic bag within, every fiber of my body ready to spring into action.

It’s a false alarm. When I look inside the can, there is nothing but empty plastic. The mouse has vanished without a trace. I sigh, straighten up, and retreat to the kitchen table, where I sit and consider my options, which are grim and few. I turn to look at the wall calendar. Five days until Kevin’s return.

Next I take a long look at the dog, still splayed on the floor across the room. Rick is proving as useless as a dish towel as a form of antimouse weaponry, which is a shame, because since my mother left town the dog is the closest thing I’ve got to an adult companion to advise me on the boycott and other household calamities.

I try to suppress a rising bitterness against Kevin about my having to turn to a large, disinterested dog for comfort in a difficult time.

“Five days,” I tell Rick, as he briefly opens an eye.

We’ll never make it.
