i really had the luxury of time to immerse myself in this year's Arts Festival. i love the stage, more than anything else. i would say my training in that area prepared me sufficiently for what was to come when i signed my very first contract. but i believe stage performances.. will always have a special place in my heart.

Wind Shadow, and Eonnagata are definitely two of my favourites. gone are the days of pure classical choreography, with just dancers and their costumes. now there's the inclusion of multimedia projections, conceptual ideas translated into staged aesthetics. Wind Shadow was put together flawlessly (personal opinion), and the choreography is a physical challenge in  itself.

Peter Brook's work. i was looking forward to this, having studied Peter Brook in Uni during my Theatre Studies days. stage was always about the use of space, the symbolism of actions, props, etc.. mise-en-scene, semiotics.. going back to watch a proper stage play drained me out completely. stage does not depend on the art of editing, but a totality of what goes on on stage, that's the beauty of it.

this was a pleasant surprise. i didn't really know much about Nitin Sawhney, so i went for his concert without knowing what to expect. i loved it. his band was fantastic, musicianship, vocals.. it was everything you hoped to get out of a concert.. and more..
arts fest
O Sounds.. this is a pretty experimental piece, for a young company. but artistic director Kuik Swee Boon is an amazing dancer, someone i really respect. i remember him in principal roles in so many SDT dances..
arts fest
i went for this mainly in support of NUS Dance Ensemble, where i was once a part of - as member and President. i've always been proud of Dance Ensemble. Zaini's piece didn't disappoint me. true to it being a platform for campus works.. it did showcase a few promising dancers and choreographers.

i particularly liked Dan Kwoh's "Message" and Lee Mun Wai's "All These Private Things"..
arts fest
Sylvie Guillem.. she's a true dance icon.. this took my breath away. the feel between this and Wind Shadow is completely different and yet they really left an impression. one thing for sure.. if they returned for another show, i'd watch it again..
arts fest
film.. dance film.. pretty experimental.. pretty bold. i liked Shelly Love's "The Forgotten Circus". one thing special about it was that it was filmed entirely backwards. so you see dance movements that would be virtually impossible if done forwards, and even though actions were backwards actions, you still get a sense of them moving forwards.. am i confusing you guys?
arts fest
i'm not so sure i enjoyed this one.
period.

this is something i probably need to start getting used to. a lot of the new choreography that i see now is heading in this direction. i'm definitely more old-school, i think dance should really be choreography that combines the foundations and techniques that build a dancer, not just bodily movements, disjointed or otherwise. that's how old-school i am.

我明天就出国了
这次要去甘肃 做一些有意义的事
非常期待
我很快就回来了
