Words

1.contain vt 里面（装）有，包含，含有。不用于进行时态

  The book contains five pictures。

  Sea water contains salt.海水里有盐。

  That box contains some old letters.这盒子里装了些旧信。

  The hall can contain 500 people.这大厅能着2000人。

拓展:注意区别 contain与 include

  contain: hold or have sth in itself. 里面有，含有

  Include: have sb./sth. As part of a whole包括。。。在内

Examples:

1)      Does the price include VAT? 价格里包括增值税吗？

2)      The book contains 12 maps, including 2 of China.这本书里有12幅地图其中有2张中国地图。

2. access n（u）进入，通路，有权用。常与连用

  There is no access to the house from the main road.从大路没有通向那座房子的路。

  Students have access to the library on Sunday.星期天学生可进图书馆。

  access v 读取，访问进入

Access information from websites.从因特网上获取信息

  Access the internet.进入因特网

3. crash vi碰地摔碎，轰地掉（倒）下来；坠毁

  The cup crashed to the floor 杯子掉到地板上摔碎了。

  The bus crashed into a tree.

  The plane crashed and no passengers survived.飞机坠毁了，无乘客生还。

  The cause of the plane isn’t known.. 飞机坠毁的原因还不清楚。

  He was badly hurt in the car crash.

4.breakdown n 机器故障，失败，破裂，身体（尤指精神）衰弱

  Our car/We had a breakdown on the motor way.我们的车在高速路上抛锚了。

  She suffered a nervous breakdown.她患神经衰弱。

 break down（机器，车辆等）坏了，（计划，谈判等）失败了，（身体）跨了，谈话（通讯等）中断；分解

  We are sorry to arrive late, but the car broke down.很抱歉迟到了，车坏了。

  All our plans broke down.我们所有的计划都失败了。

  The peace talks have broken down.和平谈判失败了。

  His health broke down,.

 He broke down in the middle of the speech.

 Chemicals in the body break down. our food into useful substances.我们体内的化学物质把我们的食物分解成有用的物质。

5 via = by way of, through 经由，通过

 He went from London to Washington via New York.他经由纽约从伦敦到华盛顿。

 I can send him a note via the internal mail system.我可以通过内部通讯给他发个通知。

 He sent me a letter via one of my friends.他通过我的一个朋友给我寄来一封信。

6 permission n.许可，允许

 Tom asked this man’s permission to use his computer.汤姆请求那人允许他使用他的电脑。

 With your permission we will take the first train.在你的允许下我们乘头班火车。

7.permitv.允许，许可

permit doing 允许做某事

permit sb to do允许某人做某事

I don’t permit making noises in my room. 允许在我办公室里吵闹。

We don’t permit smoking in the office.我们不允许在办公室吸烟。

Permit me to introduce myself.请允许我做自我介绍。

Time/Weather permitting, we’ll go swimming.时间/天气允许的话我们去游泳。

8.Concentrate 集中（注意力，思想等）。。。，专心。。。

Concentrate on /upon sth集中于，专心于

Concentrate attention/mind/energy/effort on /upon sth把注意力/思想精力/努力集中于。。。

You must concentrate on /upon your study.你必须专心学习。

If you concentrate your energy on the study of English, you will master the language.

如果你集中精力学英语你会掌握这门语言的。

His whole mind was concentrated on one thing.他全部心思用在一件事上。

9.develop v 发展，养成，形成；培养；冲洗胶卷

常见短语

develop an interest in培养。。。方面兴趣

develop the habit of 养成。。。习惯

She developed an interest in science.他对理科产生兴趣

We should develop industry.我们应该发展工业。

Charlie Chaplin developed his own way of acting.卓别林形成了自己的表演风格。

They developed their strong system of society.

I want to develop this film here.我想在这里冲胶卷。

Some children develop very slowly.有些孩子发育比较慢。

development n. 发展，开发

With the development of随着。。。的发展

With the development of science and technology, people are living a better life. 随着工农业的发展人们的生活水平越来越好。

developing发展中的

developed发达的

China is a developing country while American is a developed country.中国是一个发展中的国家而美国是个发达的国家。

10.Communication通信，联络，交往

Radio is an important means of communication无线电是一种重要的通信方式。

Language is a major means of communication, but communication between people who speak different Language is difficult.语言是一种主要交流工具。

Communicate v.转达，传递，交流

We communicate with each other by letter/telephone.我们通过信/电话交流。

He communicated the news to his classmate.他把这个消息转达给他同学。

11.last v.延续，持续；维持到；够用

His illness lasted a month.他一病一个月。

The meeting lasted a long time.会议持续了很长时间。

She felt sure that their friendship will last forever.他确信他们的友谊回永存。

How many days will our food last?我们的食物还能维持多久？

Our money will not last until the end of the month..我们的钱维持不到月底。

12.reach v达到。。。；传到。。。

Your letter never reached me.你的信从来就没到我手里。

Not a sound reached my ears.我一点没听见。

13.average平均

the average of。。。的平均数

on(the) average平均起来

14.pass 经过，通过，超过

He pretended not to have seen us when he passed us.他从我们旁边经过假装没看见我们。

A new law was passed.通过了一项新的法律。

Dick has already passed his father in height.在体量上他已超过了他父亲。

15.expect v.期待，预料，指望

I hardly expected to find you still here.我没料到仍然在这找到你。

I expect you to stay longer.我希望你再呆一会。

This film is more interesting than (it was) expected.这部电影比预料的有趣。

be expected to do sth.被期待做。。。有望。。。

You are expected to be there on time.千万莫误！/准时到达

Phrases

1.       consist of=be made up of由。。。组成/构成（无被动语态）

The class consists of 65 students.这 个班级由65人组成。

The committee consists of 7 members.委员会由7名成员组成。

2.be/become known as作为。。。出名；被称着/叫着；大家公认

   She was known as an excellent dancer她是公认的优秀的舞蹈家。

   Smith is known as a successful banker.斯密斯以成功的银行家而著称。

   The African lion is known as the king of the forest.非洲狮被称为森林之王

2.       go down（价格，河水，温度）等下降，太阳落下，船下沉，风平浪静

the sun is going down.太阳正西下。

Prices have gone down but I doubt if they will remain so.价格已降下来了，但我怀疑是否能保持这样。

   I am glad your temperature has gone down.很高兴你的体温降下来了 。

3.       come up with提出

he came up with a new suggestion.他提出了一个新建议

I hope you can come up with a better plan than this.我希望你能提出比这个更好的计划。

Scientists will have to come up with new methods of increasing the world’s food supply.

科学家们必须提出新的增加世界食品供应的方法。

4.       compare… with…把。。。和。。。相比较

It’s necessary to compare English with Chinese in English study.在英语学习中有必要把英语和汉语做比较。

Compare this with that you will see which is better.把这个与那个做比较你会看出哪个更好。

He compared Paris with Shanghai.他把巴黎和上海做了一下比较。

Compared with many women she was fortunate.和其他妇女比较，她是幸运的。

It was a small place then compared with what it is now.和现在比较，那时它是一个很小的地方。

Sugar production has rose 15% percent compared to/with the first six months of last year.与去年1-8月分比较糖的产量增加了15%。

5.       agree with sb.(what sb. said, one’s idea, one’s opinion, one’s decision, one’s view)

1)      同意某人（某人说的话，想法，意见，决定，观点）

2)      与。。。一致/气候，食物等适合。。。

I agree with what you said.

He didn’t agree with your opinion.

His words didn’t agree with his action.他言行不一致

The weather in the north doesn’t agree with her.她不适应北方的气候。

Bananas don’t agree with everybody.香蕉并不是适合每个人。

Agree to a plan/proposal/suggestion…同意一项计划/提议/安排

但不可说 agree sb to do

6.       in one’s opinion在我看来，依我之见

In my opinion, you are wrong. 在我看来，你错了。

In my personal opinion, you should go to help them. 依我之见，你应该去帮他们

7.       hesitate to do sth./hesitate about doing sth.对做某事有顾虑，做某事犹豫

If you need any help, don’t hesitate to ask.如果年需要帮助，就说吧。

He is still hesitating about sending his son abroad.他仍然对送他儿子出国犹豫不决。

8.       play a role of扮演一个...角色

9.a series of一系列，一连串

   There has been a series of car accidents at the crossing.在那个十字 路口曾发生过一连串的车祸。

   These days I have read a series articles on reading.这些日子我读了一系列论述读书的文章。 

   They will play a series games this year.今年他们将进行一系列的比赛。
