1.Sober  adj. not drunk 未醉的;清醒的 \审慎的;严肃的;庄重的 \不加装饰的;朴素无华的\ v.使严肃;使变审慎

e.g. Tom drove his friends home after the party because he was (唯一未喝醉的) .

as sober as a judge严肃庄重的\十分清醒的, 一点没有喝醉的       e.g. sober judgment审慎的判断

sober down 变冷静, 沉着; (使)安静下来

sober up [off] (使)从酒醉中清醒过来

sober-headed,-minded  沉着的, 头脑冷静的

a sober life有节制的生活

2.Twist to change shape by bending or turning

n.一扭, 扭曲, 盘旋, 曲折, 歪曲, 手法, 螺旋状

vt.vi.拧, 扭曲, 绞, 搓, 捻, 使苦恼, 使转动, 编织

twists and turns迂回曲折之处; 各个角落; 精微处

twist off  扭断; 扭[拧]开

twist up 把...卷成螺旋形; 扭弯

twist bars,cinnamon, croissants and lemon jelly flavours (donut)

e.g. The woman (把嘴巴一歪)  and tears ran down her face.

3.Prone: adj. adv. having the probability of \\有...倾向的, 易于...的(to)\\俯伏的, 面向下的\\倾斜的, 陡的

  be prone to sth./doing sth.

  be prone to err 易犯过失

e.g. prone pressure method 俯伏人工呼吸法

   She is prone to colds.  她易患感冒

e.g. Jim was (更易于发火)with people who did not respect science.

4.Compromise: settlement of a dispute by which each side gives up something \\vt.vi. n. 和解,...妥协, 折衷处理\\ 危及, 连累\\放弃(原则, 利益), 泄露(秘密)

  compromise with…on ...方面同...妥协

e.g.  After several discussions the two sides realized that (只有他们都愿意作出妥协,问题才能解决)

  If I only knew! 要是我知道该多好(但愿)

   adjust, concede, settle, yield to,

5.Sacrifice:  to give up in order to get something more important \n.v. 牺牲, 献身, 祭品, 供奉

  sacrifice...for [to] ...而牺牲, 牺牲...而换得...

  at [by] the sacrifice of 靠牺牲...; ...为代价

   make sacrifices [a sacrifice] to ...作出牺牲\降低价格, 忍痛出售

e.g. After her husband was promoted to the manager of the company, Helen decided to(为了家庭而牺牲事业)

6.Guilt:a strong feeling of shame and sadness; \\n.罪行, 内疚

guilty: adj.犯罪的, 有罪的, 心虚的

 be guilty of a crime 犯了罪

e.g. Henry was constantly disturbed by (内疚感) after he lost his best friend in the war.

7. Stalk: to walk with long steps (in an angry or proud way)v.n.高视阔步, \\偷偷地走; 蹑手蹑脚地接近\\搜索, 潜步追踪\\象幽灵似的缠着; (疾病, 灾难)蔓延\\ , , ,

e.g. The soldiers(趾高气扬地走在城市里)as if they owned the place.(occupiers)

    cabbage stalk 结球甘蓝; 菜叶柄

    cane stalk 甘蔗茎

    corn stalk玉米杆

8.Remarkable: adj. out of the ordinary; deserving attention \\卓越的; 显著的; 非凡的, 异常的, 奇异的,值得注意的\\

e.g. The military leader is John Smith, (一名真正卓越的人).

 be remarkable for one's bravery以勇敢著称

9. Cause: purpose for which efforts are being made

n.原因, 导致某事发生的人或事, 动机, 理由, 根据, 目标, 理想, 事业\\ vt.引起, 惹起, 使(发生), 促成

e.g. The United Nations Organization (目的是建设一个和平的世界) and it devotes to the noble cause of peacekeeping.

1).devote 指 “决心将全部身心、活动、精力等献出”

  e.g. to devote one's life to a cause把生命献给事业。

2). dedicate 系正式用语, 指“庄重地奉献给神”或“为神圣目的而贡献”, 如:

e.g. They dedicated the temple.他们献出庙宇。

cause,reason,justification,ground “原因”或“理由”

1).cause用于表示具有明显因果关系的原因。reason有时能与cause换用,

e.g. They are trying to find out the reason (or cause) of the terrible fire.

2). reason通常含有“理由”的意思

3). justification所表示的“理由”的内涵是“正当”或辩解

e.g. You have no justification for deserting your wife and children. 你没有理由抛妻弃子。

4). ground 所表示的“理由”包含着坚实的依据

e.g. On what ground do you suspect him?

10.Heal: to become healthy and sound\\v. n.(使)痊愈, 治愈(多指外伤)\消除(分歧), 和解, 调停\\(在屋面上)盖瓦

e.g. The soldier (腿上有一处伤口). It would heal quickly if he kept the wounded leg clean.

    heal-all n.万灵药, 百宝丹

e.g. His wounds are healing up [over].

          他的伤口正在痊愈。

     He was healed of his sickness.他病已痊愈。

cf correct cure mend remedy repair

    hurt injure wound

11.Attribute n. vt. 属性, 品质, 特征, 加于, 归结于

 attribute sth. to

 认为某事物是...的属性; 把某事物归功于; 认为某事物是(某人)创造的

e.g. delays attributed to snow   因下雪而耽搁

e.g. The modern scientific method is usually attributed to Galileo.

   现代科学方法通常被认为是伽里略创造的。

   (= ascribe to)

e.g. The army officer (把其有效的管理归功于             对士兵的正规训练)。

12.Leap  v. n. (leapt [lept], leaped [li:pt])[现在除成语外, 普通用 jump]

  , 跳越, 跳跃,飞跃

 Look before you leap.

  []三思而后行。

Leap out at 引人注意

e.g.  Mr. Smith was out of touch with his friend for a year. When he turned the newspaper this morning, the picture of his friend (引起他的注意) him.

13.Smooth over ...弄平; 使平息[稳定]下来消除(障碍等)

vsmooth: 弄平[], ...[]\\使流利[流畅]\\使容易; 消除(障碍等)(out; over; down; away)\\掩饰, 遮掩(over)

使柔[]; 镇定; 使高雅; 使(晚年等)平安

e.g. smooth away differences     消除分歧

    smooth the anger      平息怒气

e.g. James made an attempt to(消除和同事的争论)  by telling her a joke.

14.Line up  排成行,排成列

e.g. The military leader (把所有的军官排队) after the attack. 

" glare []光滑的, 亮晶晶的 n.眩目的光, 显眼, 怒目而视, (冰等的表面)光滑的表面

"v.闪耀

  glare ice 光滑而发亮的冰

Glare vt....怒目而视

e.g. glare defiance at each other 彼此怒目相视(表示互不服气)

vi.眩目地照射, 闪耀; 炫耀\\瞪眼, 怒目而视glare(at, on, upon)

e.g. They stood glaring at each other.

e.g. The army officer (生气地瞪着士兵)who were fighting each other in the camp.

15.Damn v. n.咒骂; [诅咒语]该死, 混帐\丝毫\下地狱\\ adj.可恶的, 讨厌的\完全的; 没望的(用以加强贬义)\ adv.非常, 极其

e.g. I‘ll be damned if I’ll go. 我要是去就不  是人!

Damned  if …= I'll be damned if …      

 []要是...我就不是人!

  It is not worth a damn. 一文不值。

damn it (all)![]见鬼! 真糟糕! 真气死人!

Damn you! (=God damn you !) 该死! 混蛋!

 It's damn cold.天冷得要命。

16.Kneel: knelt, (kneeled), kneeling

  下跪, 跪着(before; to, down)

e.g. Everyone in church knelt in prayer.

        跪着祈祷。

   She knelt to pray. 她跪下祈祷。

17.Reach v.(常与out, for连用)伸手\\n.伸手可及之距离\\延伸;伸展\\ 到达\\ 联系e.g. Please reach her by telephone.

       reached out an arm

18.Run: vi, vt 迅速移动;迅速行驶

e.g. I'll run the car into town.

       迅速开进城里。

  He ran his eyes down the list.

      迅速地在名单上扫了一下。

19.Leave vt. vi. 听任; (某人)做某事, 留置不动

e.g. leave the door open让门开着

 leave a thing as it is 听其自然, 置之不理

20.leave alone不管, 不理会; 不惹动

21.Sentimentalize:vi. vt. 伤感; 伤感地想; 感情用事

e.g. sentimentalize over [about] the past

   思往事而伤感

 sentimentalise one's college days

     对大学时代怀伤感

22.Amputation:  amputate vt.切除(手臂,腿等)

23.Sever vi. vt. 分成两半;切成两段 \\分开; 离开;使隔开; 从整体切下(一部分)sever oneself from 退(); 脱离; ... 分离

e.g. The rope severed under the strain.

      拉紧后断了。

  sever friends 离间朋友

sever connections with sb. 断绝关系

24.Scar:(scarred; scarring) n.v. 伤疤, 伤痕\\[]精神上的创伤

  a mental scar 精神上的创伤

 scar-faced adj.脸上有疤的, 满脸是疤的

 He jests at scars that never felt a wound.

[谚]没有受过伤的人总爱嘲笑别人的伤疤; 未经痛苦的人不懂得同情别人。

25.Odd adj.奇数的, 单数的, 单只的, 不成对的, 临时的, 不固定的, 带零头的, 余的

 e.g. at odd times[moments]有空的时候; 偶而

26.Interval n.间隔, 距离, 幕间休息; 时间间隔

 at intervals每隔一段时间,每隔一段距离

 at regular intervals每隔一定时间; 每隔一定距离

in the intervals of business在工作间隙时间

27.draft: v. n. 起草; ...打样, 设计\\选派, 选拔; []()\\汲出

e.g. be drafted into the army 应征入伍

    draft a bill 起草法案

   acceptance draft  承兑汇票

28.Board  n. v. 木板, 甲板, 膳食费用, 会议桌 ; \\用板盖上, 包饭,供膳宿, (船、飞机等) go on board\\ board the train

 e.g. board and lodging 膳宿费

29.Offensive: adj.冒犯的; 唐突的;讨厌的, 无礼的, 攻击性的\\  n.进攻, 攻势

e.g. offensive manner 无礼的态度

  offensive formation 进攻队形

  assume (take) the offensive 进攻, 采取攻势

30.Enlist: vi. vt. 征募, 谋取(支持、赞助等), 应募, 赞助, 支持, 征召, 参军

e.g. enlist men for the army

enlist in the army 参军

   enlist sb.'s sympathy and help

31.Guilt n. 罪行;有罪\\罪过;归罪 \\知罪

e.g. His face showed guilt.

    他的脸上流露出内疚的神情。

Guilty: adj.犯罪的;有罪的\\内疚的;自觉有罪的

e.g. guilty look内疚的神色

 to be guilty of a crime犯了罪

32.Conscience:良心, 道德心, 良知

e.g. have a bad [guilty, an evil] conscience

    有愧于良心, 内疚

   have a clear [good] conscience问心无愧

A quiet conscience sleeps in thunder.

[]没做亏心事, 不怕鬼叫门。

33.Tonnage: n.吨位, 载重量\\登记吨位, 排水量

34.Ferociously: 凶猛的, 残忍的\\[]非常的, 激烈的

e.g. a ferocious bore 非常讨厌的家伙

a ferocious look  凶恶的相貌

35.Humanist n.人文主义者; 人道主义者; 人文学者; 古典文化学者humanism人道主义, 人本主义, 人文主义
