1.Indomitable:  impossible to defeat不屈不挠的; 不能征服的; 大无畏的; 不气馁的

e.g. The pioneers demonstrated(百折不回的毅力)in their successful conquering of the West.

 dominate v.支配, 统治

cf. unbeatable\ unconquerable \uncontrollable \unmanageable \unruly \unyielding

2.Appetite n. a natural or strong desire.食欲, 胃口, \欲望, 爱好

 Appetite comes with eating.

    []胃口越吃越大(贪得无厌)

A good appetite is a good sauce.   []饥不择食。

 have an appetite for 爱好

give appetite 促进食欲

e.g. Still(受着可怕消息的打击), the migrant(迁移的)workers had no appetite for dinner.

3.Crave  vt. vi. feel a powerful desire for

   热望, 渴望\\恳求(for, after), 乞求

e.g. crave after sympathy 渴望同情

 Having walked in the desert for the whole morning, (移民们渴望一些喝的)。

4Naive a. showing a lack of experience

幼稚的,无知的\\天真的;质朴的

e.g. We can’t help laughing at(儿童幼稚的话)on a heroic and romantic(传奇性的)life for the cowboys.

5.Accomplish  v. achieve, finish successfully完成, 贯彻, 实现, 达到; 实行

 

e.g. Each westward step of the pioneer was                      accomplished not only(通过自力更生), but also by the efforts of(一个积极的联邦政府).

 

achieve \carry out \complete \do \finish \fulfill perform\ realize 

6.tough  adj. strong, able to endure坚韧的, 粘着的; 强壮的; 倔强的(精神), 固执的, [美]粗暴的,困难的, 难忍受的, 令人不快的, 困苦的

 a tough guy [美]无赖

 a tough customer 难伺候的客人

e.g Although Mrs. Williams (以强硬而著称)lady in the Westward Movement, she was unusually (温柔而和蔼)with her children.

rough. Adj.粗糙的, 粗略的, 大致的, 粗野的, 粗暴的, 粗略叙述的

7.Resemble   vt. be like, be similar to; 象; 类似

 e.g. Though the author claimed(断言)

that the tramps (流浪者) resemble pioneers, many would still find the idea disagreeable.(令人不快的;讨厌的)

8.Fell  cut or knock down   

  fall 的过去式\\vt.击倒, 打倒(疾病等), 致于...死地, 砍伐\\n.一季所伐的木材, 兽皮, 羊毛\\adj.凶猛的, 可怕的

  fell a tree; fell an opponent in boxing.

 

e.g. It pained the Indians to see the age-old(龄期古老的)trees (被伐倒用来盖原木小)for the settlers.

9.Reckon  settle accounts (with)

   vt. vi. 计算,(与in连用)把…计算在内, 总计, 估计,(与with, without连用)考虑到;没有考虑到, 猜想; \\(与on连用)依靠;指望

   e.g. I reckon him as a friend.(看作)

She reckoned the money we owed her.

I reckon there are at least fifty people in the room .(估计)

reckon with...算帐; ...清算 \\...考虑进去; 重视 \\对付; 解决, 处理

e.g. They decided to (清算叛徒) after they drove the enemy off.

10.Perish  come to an end; decay; die

vi.毁灭, 死亡, 腐烂, 枯萎\\ vt.毁坏, 使麻木

e.g. The city perished in an earthquake.毁灭

   Flowers perish when frost comes.

e.g. In the early years of Westward Movement, it was not unusual for settlers to (死于饥饿和疾病).

Perish the thought!

让这种想法见鬼去吧!根本别存在这种念头!(表示强烈厌恶或反对)

11.make good accomplish, succeed 有成就;成功

 make sth. good 实现(目的)

 make good one's escape 顺利逃脱

e.g. Jack (原以为可以取得成功)in the big city but unfortunately he couldn’t even find a job there.

12.stay putremain where placed

 []安装牢固, 原位不动

Put: adj. informal,  fixed; stationary:

"Although the invaders were drawing close, Melanie (必须原地不动)because she was expecting a baby.

 \\draw vi. 前进,向...移动, 挨近 vt.汲取, 领取, 提取, 引起, 吸引

e.g. a ship drawing near the shore船驶近海岸

draw near走近; 临近

expect vi.期望, 期待, 希望\\怀孕 be expecting 怀孕

His wife was expecting.他的妻子当时正怀孕。

13.go broke become penniless

Broke: adj. bankrupt 破产的\\lacking funds缺乏资金的,分文不名的

clean broke= dead broke=stone broke= stony broke身无分文, 一文不名

e.g. The(金融危机非常突然)that many millionaires(一夜破产).

14.amount to muchaccomplish much[常用于否定句]有重要性, 了不起

Much: n.大量, 许多\\重要[有意义]的事物\

be too much for one

[俗]非力所能及; 干不了, 受不了, 应付不了

make much of 尊重, 重视; 充分利用;

He is not much of a scholar.

他不是什么了不起的学者。

e.g. Nobody in the class had expected that the shy and quiet John would  (有出息).

15.next to nothing: almost nothing差不多没有,几近于零:

e.g. Idling all day long, Henry (几乎毫无所得)after studying abroad for one year.

 

idle:v.adj.懒散; 闲逛; 无所事事(about, along)

    idle away 浪费光阴; 虚度(时间)

16.On the run: in flight, continuously active and moving about 逃走;躲藏;匆匆忙忙

e.g. Being afraid of imprisonment(关押), the homeless were(正奔跑着躲开警察).

17.Tramp: vi. vt. n.踩, 践踏(on, upon)\\用沉重的脚步走, 慢慢走\\漂泊, 流浪\\步行; 徒步旅行to walk with a firm, heavy step\\to wander about aimlessly

on the tramp到处流浪

take a long tramp to长途跋涉到...

18.Stride  v.大步走(), 跨过, 大步行走 n.步幅, 进步 to walk with long steps, especially in a hasty or vigorous way\\a step of progress(in the plural)

  make great [rapid] strides

大有进步, 进展迅速, 大跃进

19. Mull: vi. vt. to ruminate; ponder:[英口]弄糟, 粉碎; 研磨; 混砂; 煨煮\\[美口]仔细考虑,深思熟虑

mull sth. over (=mull over sth.)

[口]反复考虑某事

make a mull of sth.[口]把事情弄糟

20. Privation: n. an act, condition, or result of deprivation or loss .缺乏, 穷困, 丧失, 剥夺

e.g. die of privation 穷死

suffer many privations吃尽苦头, 备尝艰辛

 deprive vt. 剥夺, 使丧失

21.Attach:v. 附上, 贴上\\to bind by emotional ties, as of affection or loyalty:使喜爱,使依恋

e.g. Mary was attached to her brother.

attach labels to the luggage系在

22.Root: vi. vt. 生根;固定 \\(常与out, up连用)连根拔除;根除;杜绝

take root 生根;扎根 (= strike root)

Drive  v.开车, 驱赶, 推动、发动\\to create or produce by penetrating forcibly: 钻出

e.g. The nail drove a hole in the tire.

            钉子在车胎上扎了个洞.

23. Standing: adj. 直立的, 停滞的, 固定的, 常备的, 标准的, 常设的 \\n.站立, 身分, 名望, 持续, 期间

e.g. an illness of long standing长期疾病

   a standing jump 立定跳高

24. Possess vt.占有, 拥有, 持有, 摆布, 支配

 be possessed of 拥有, 占有, 具有, 享有

possess oneself of 取得, 获得, ...占为已有

be possessed by [with](鬼怪、思想等)缠住, 迷住

like one possessed象着了魔的人一样

25.Impulsive adj. inclined to act on impulse rather than thought易冲动的;感情用事的

id 私我,本我, 在弗洛伊德理论中,完全处于无意识中的心理状态,它是产生本能冲动和要求直接满足原始欲望的根源,\\遗传素质, 本能冲动
