Voice——
Hi, my name is Evangeline. I'm a locol astonian and have been studying at Aston for over 6 years. From a little girl who always needed to copy the exam paper three times because of her English test score below 75 to a young lady ready to go to USA for college, Aston played the important role of transforming me.
I came to Aston as soon as it opened in Xi'an. From C5 to C14, slowly I became a good English speaker and a more confident teenager. After C14, I took Princeton Review lessons-Vocab, Grammar, Reading, Writting, Eloquence. In these five lessons I learnt more advanced English and made great progress. Later on I took Aston IELTS classes to improve my English level to an international standard.
Studying at Aston
was great fun. I think I was really lucky to have so many excellent
teachers, who though came from different countries and had
different teaching styles but were all very responsible and wise.
These teachers taught me not only English, but also a way of
thinking, a way to discover what's it like in the rest of the
world. I still remember our Princeton Review teacher, Patrick
Miller, who now I'm still in touch with, gaving us so many
knowledge about culture and history in reading class, performing as
if he was the Martin Luther King when introducing us how to make a
speech.
In 2005, I won the first prize in Xi'an Aston Oral English Competition. The prize for me was a two-week summer camp in Austin, America. During the trip we first visited Austin, Texas. There we spent 10 happy days visiting museums and farms, parks and seaworld. Every afternoon, we had two hours of interesting English class at Ausin Aston school. During the class we learnt about the history and the diverse culture of America through various games and plays. Later we visited Disneyland in California and that was absolutely the dreamland! This trip, as well as much information I got from books or foreign teachers, light up the fire inside me. From then on I the dream of going to USA for college never die. In 2007, I took TOEFL and SAT tests and applied American universities. I was admitted by 6 universities and I chose Illinois Wesleyan University, which is located in Illinois state because it offered me scholarship of 33,000 dollars per year and 132,000 dollars for all four years. This college is one of the best liberal art colleges in America and has produced many great scholars, artists, businessmen and politicians now famous in different fields all over the world..
Studying English, from my point of view, is not a hard work. From my experience, I have the following advice. First, and the most important, is that one has to regard English as a LANGUAGE, NOT knowledge. English is like Chinese, something we learn for speaking, not for scientific study. With this bear in mind, one will realize that the best way to learn English is to speak and listen to it, not memorizing stiff grammar or vocabulary. Besides, if you really want to improve English, you should not fear of making mistakes. Only by making mistakes can you realize that you are wrong and can correct it. Another is about remembering words. My suggestion is that one should remember 2 or 3 words daily and gradually his vocabulary will increase dramatically.
So, this is me, a
common but strong-willed me. Come on my friends, a brighter future
