At Most Formal Situations

                                       (最正式场合着装)

(Ma Zhiwei, the general manager of China National Imp, & Exp. Crop and his wife, Wang Lan are invited to have a business trip to Canada. Linda, the general assistant of the United Hardware Co. Canada, is in charge of the reception. Mr. and Mrs. Ma are in their room at a hotel, still in pajamas. )

(中国国家进出口公司总裁，马志伟和妻子王兰应邀去加拿大出差。加拿大联合五金公司总助理琳达负责接待事宜。此时马志伟夫妇正在宾馆房间里休息，身上还穿着睡衣。）

   Ma: It’s our second day in Canada, but we still haven’t got over jet-lag completely. Our Canadian hosts have been thoughtful. They have given us time to adjust our new location and time zone.

  (马：这是我们加拿大之旅的第二天了，但我们还没有完全从时差中恢复过来。我们的加拿大主人考虑得非常周到，让我们有时间适应新地方和时区。）

 Wang: Yes, I hope we’ll have a wonderful journey here in Canada.

  (王：是啊，希望我们在加拿大度过一个奇妙的旅程。）

(Telephone is ringing.)

  （电话响了。）

   Ma: Good morning. This is Ma Zhiwei.

  (马：早安，我是马志伟。）

Linda: Good morning, Mr. Ma. This is Linda. Am I calling too early?

(琳达：早安，马先生。我是琳达，我这个电话是否打得太早了？）

   Ma: No, no. Not at all.

  (马：不，不会很早。）

Linda: I trust you’ve had a good rest.

(琳达：相信你们一定休息得很好。）

   Ma: Yes. It’s a nice hotel. Thank you for your arrangement.

  (马：是的，这家宾馆不错，感谢你为我们所作的安排。）

Linda: That’s good. I hope you have already adjusted yourselves to the time here.

(琳达：这样就好，希望你们已适应这里的时间。）

   Ma: We think so.

  (马：我们想是的。）

Linda: Good, now I’m phoning to remind you the banquet we are going to have in your honor this evening.

(琳达：太好了，我打电话来是想提醒一下今天晚上为欢迎你们而设的晚宴。）

   Ma: Thank you. It is 7 o’clock at Hilton Restaurant, isn’t it。

  (马：谢谢您。今晚七点在希尔顿酒家，是吗？）

Linda: Yes, it is. I’ll pick you up at six at the gate of the hotel.

(琳达：是的，我六点到酒店门口接你们。）

   Ma: That’s very kind of you. By the way, is it a formal one?

  (马：你太客气了。顺便问一下，是正式晚宴吗？）

Linda: Yes, very formal. Some of the officials from the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Co-operation will be there, too.

(琳达：是的，非常正式。经济贸易合作部的某些官员也将出席。）

   Ma: I see. Thank you for telling me that. We will see you then. (To his wife) The banquet tonight is a very formal one and they pick us up at six in the afternoon. We’d better prepare for it at an early time.

  (马：明白了。谢谢你告诉我，那么到时再见。（对他妻子）今晚的晚宴十分正式，他们下午六点钟就来接我们，我们最好早点准备。）

 Wang: Since this is the first time for me to attend such a formal banquet in Canada. I feel a little bit at lost what to wear. Zhiwei, is there any particular requirement for dressing tonight？

  (王：这是我第一次参加加拿大的正式晚宴，我都有点不知道穿什么衣服了。志伟，这次晚宴对着装是否有特别的要求？）

   Ma: They didn’t mention that, but since it is a very formal occasion, it is quite usual for ladies to wear evening dresses or banquet dresses. I remembered having asked you to prepare two such dresses before our leaving, didn’t I?

  (马：他们没有提及，但由于这是个很正式的晚宴，女士通常要穿晚礼服或晚宴礼服。我记得出国前叮嘱过你准备两套这样的礼服。）

 Wang: Yes, but I’ve only got a gray evening dress. You know woman’s cheongsam is my favorite and I brought two of them. I wonder if I can wear it to the banquet tonight.

   Ma: Woman’s cheongsam is usually appropriate for cases like this both at home and abroad only if they are well-tailored and made of materials of high quality and with national features, such as silk, velvet, etc. As the banquet tonight has no particular requirement for dressing, you can wear your favorite.

  (马：旗袍的话，如果选用具有民族特色的丝绸、丝绒等高档面料，裁剪合体在，在国内外正式的场合都是适宜的。因为这次晚宴对服装没有特别的要求，你可以穿你心爱的旗袍。）

 Wang: That’s great. (Taking out one red and one black woman’s cheongsam from the wardrobe)Zhiwei, which one is better for me to wear tonight?

  (王：太好了。（从衣橱里拿出一件红色和一件黑色的旗袍）志伟，今天晚上我穿哪件好？）

   Ma: I prefer the black one. It’ll well match your white pearl necklace and earrings.

  (马：我更喜欢那件黑色的，配上你的白色珠链和耳环，效果一定不错。）

 Wang: OK, I’ll take the black one. What will you wear tonight?

  (王：好，那我就穿黑礼服。那你穿什么？）

   Ma: Men were usually required to wear men’s formal attires or swallow tails for every formal occasions. However, since these dressings are quite out of date now, it is very common for men to wear suit in three instead.

  (马：在正式场合，男士一般要求穿男礼服和燕尾服。但是这已比较少见，通常穿三件套西服礼服就行了。）

 Wang: I see. (Taking out a dark suit in three with white shirt and gray tie). Is it what you what?

  (王：明白了。（拿出三件套西服和白衬衣、灰领带）这是你要的吗？）

   Ma: Yes. And my shoes and socks, please. Remember, don’t match black shoes with white socks as you did last time.

  (马：是的。请把我的皮鞋和袜子也拿出来。记住，别像上次那样把黑皮鞋和白袜子配在一起。）

 Wang: Oh, please don’t tease me any more. I know how to do this time. Besides, I will first have our dress ironed and our shoes polished. Then we’ll go downstairs to have our hair beautified at the beauty salon.

  (王：噢，别再取笑我了，我知道这次该怎么做。除此之外，首先，先得请服务员把衣服熨一下，把皮鞋擦一下，然后到楼下美容院把头发整理一下。）

注释

1、  睡衣（night clothes, pajamas）,顾名思义是上床睡觉时穿的服装,是不允许穿出室外的，更不能穿去会客接友。这时如有客人来访，应让客人先在客厅等候，等自己在内间换完衣服后再出来会客不迟。如有比较熟的朋友到访，可在外面再穿上一件睡袍（grow, robes）, 但这只限于好朋友之间非正式的情况，否则会被视为缺少教养和失礼。

2、  长途跋涉，必然十分劳累，主人应体贴周到，给予客人一定的休息和恢复疲劳的时间，而不应在客人到达后即刻就安排商务活动。

3、  客人在前一天晚上才到，第二天早晨也许会谁得迟一些，因此主人应避免过早地打扰客人。如有必要打电话，也应选择相对较迟的时间，而且礼貌得体地说一声。

4、  参加晚宴，通常主人会在请柬上通知对方晚宴是否是正式的，但是在口头通知时，如主人未说明，客人最好问清楚，以便挑选合适的服装出席，以免失礼和尴尬。

5、  在正式场合，女士的服装一般为一件套长裙的晚礼服（evening dresses）, 或晚宴礼服(banquet dresses), 配以钻石或珍珠项链(diamond or pearl necklace)和耳环(ear-rings),配高跟皮鞋(high-heeled leather shoes),手挎装饰用小手袋。在这样的场合，女士切忌穿裤子(trousers)或短至膝盖以上的短裙(short skirts)，否则是失礼和缺乏教养的行为。

6、  在中国出席正式晚宴或中国人在国外参加正式宴会时，对女士来说一条中式的旗袍(woman’s cheongsam)就可以了。旗袍是我国的民族服装，在充分体现形体美的同时，也不乏端庄典雅，与坎肩(padded or lines sleeveless jacktets)和披巾(capes,shawls)、高跟鞋相配更显端庄华贵。但旗袍的质地一定要选用丝绸(silk)、丝绒(velvet)等高档而具有民族特色的质料。

7、  如果是正式的晚宴，男士可穿男礼服(men’s formal attires)、燕尾服(swallowtails, tails)，但这在现在已比较少见。穿上衣、背心、长裤组成的三件套西服礼服(suit in three)，配上黑色皮鞋和白色胸饰手帕就可以了，通常三件套西装被认为是最正宗、最经典的商务套装。西服的面料一定要高档，一般首选毛料；西服的颜色在庄重、正式的场合，首选藏青色，其次灰色、棕色、黑色；里面的衬衣一般为白色，领子和袖口要比西服外套高出和长出1-1.5厘米。西服的口袋很多，但各有其用，切记不要把西装的口袋塞得鼓鼓囊囊的。

8、  与西服配套的鞋子，应当是真皮制品而非仿皮，一般来说，牛皮鞋与西装最般配，商务人员在选择皮鞋时，应以深色系带牛皮鞋为最佳选择。袜子一般为纯棉、纯毛为好，通常深色鞋子配深色袜子，不要使鞋子和袜子的颜色对比太明显。

9、  出席正式的商业晚宴或鸡尾酒会，一定要事先做好着装和外观方面的准备工作，特别是出差在外的人员，由于形装放在箱子里，所以应及时让服务员熨烫整齐，皮鞋要擦亮，必要时也应整理一下发型，女士还应适当化妆。总之要使自己着装合适，举止得体，给人以庄重典雅的感觉。
