Lunar Yogas (Anabha, Sunabha, Dhurudhara, Kemadruma)

For lunar yogas with names Anabha, Sunabha, Dhurudhara & Kemadruma are very popular. Many believe that these words are of Greek origin. They provide the following info to support their argument. 

 This argument based on simple word similarity is simply wrong due to the following facts -

• The Sanskrit names of these Yogas are NOT Sunapha, Anaphara, Daurudhara, but Sunabha, Anabha & Dhurudhara.
• The Greeks borrowed these words from Yavanas (Ionians) of the by gone past; Ionians who co-existed and communicated withCrete and Harappan people during 3^rd and 2^nd millennium BC. (Greek has only a recent history from BC 800 onwards). Even Vedas (3^rd millennium BC), Panini  and Parasara of BC 1400 mention Yavanacharya.
• These words are used only by Sphujidhvaja and Meenaraja of AD 250, but also by the BC 1100 sages of the ancient past such as Sage Garga, and also by the first authentic text of Indian astrology “Skanda Hora”, the content of which could date back to BC 1500 or more.
• The Greeks to whom these words are attributed DOES NOT HAVE clear root meaning to provide for these words! They are unable to explain how these words originated and how and why they got the current astrological meaning they have!

If you are not satisfied with the above info, simply go through the Sanskrit meaning of these words and understand why these words are fundamentally words of Sanskrit/Indian origin.

1)     Anabha

“Bham” is a popular Sanskrit word, which means “Nakshtra” or “Sign”. “Bham” is a pure Sanksrit word and usually when get translated to Greek, becomes “phara” (note this point for later use). “Anabha” means “Preceding sign”. Thus “Anabha Yoga” means “Preceding sign from the Moon sign should be occupied with planets”. This yoga was named so due to the fact that “Anabha” means “Preceding Sign”.

2)     Sunabha

Here also the meaning is pretty clear. “Bham” means sign and “Sunabha” means the “Succeeding sign”. Thus “Sunabha Yoga” means that the “Succeeding sign from Moon sign should be occupied with planets”. This yoga was named so due to the fact that “Sunabha” means “Succeeding Sign”.

3)     Durudhara

“Dhuru” means Yoke or Balance and “Dhara” means “weight”. Durudhara means “Balaced weight (on both sides)” like in a balance where weight is placed on both sides. In Dhurudhara yoga, planets are present on both sides of Moon and thus the name.

4)     Kemadruma (Hema-druma)

Can anyone tell me why this yoga is named so? I bet - you won”t. But for sure, you all know that “Druma” is a Sanskrit word meaning “Tree”. The ancient Sanskrit name for this yoga is “Hema druma” referrign to a useless tree providing green apple like poisonous fruit.(In malayalam it is called Ummattin Kai. I don”t know the English name for this tree)

If both sides of Moon is void of planets it is “Hema druma Yoga” - Means this combination makes the horoscope almost useless. It makes the native devoid of maternal property and good mental qualities making him poor. That is why the result “poverty” is attributed to this yoga. The word “Hemadruma” also means “Trouble giving tree” like a thorny tree or an itching tree that may cause trouble and damage to others. A native with strong “Hemadruma yoga” is like a troublesome useless plant.

Please note the absurdity in translating the word “Anabha” (Preceding Sign) as “Applying” and Sunabha (Succeeding Sign) as “Separating” (refer to the table given in the beginning) by the western scholars! They neither know the root of the word not the meaning! In western astrology “applying aspect” means the aspect caused by a planet “Nearing” some other planet and “separating aspect” means the aspect caused by a planet “Going away” from some other planet. You should note that a “retrograde planet in 12H from Moon” (making a Anabha Yoga) is producing “Separating aspect” (and not Applying aspect) and a “retrograde planet in 2H from Moon” (making a Sunabha Yoga) is producing “Applying aspect” as opposed to the translation suggested by the westerners.

Blind guids the blind based on simple word similarity and without considering  the history (of cultures and words) and meaning of words! What is all these? A simple article arguing in favor of Greeks appear everywhere in numerous sites - whether it contains some real valuable contents or not - and gains public support, usually of if it is in favor of the popular and wrong Greek favoritistic argument! All seems to be part of an absurd drama and lack of original thinking!

Is it not time to look back and rethink? Let us be more sincere, logical and systematic in our approach to safeguard against the baseless arguments.

Solar Yogas (Vasi-Vesi-Ubhayachari)

Vasi-Vesi-Ubhayachari are termed solar yogas – i.e. yogas caused by Sun. If there are planets (other than Moon, Rahu, Ketu) in 12^th house from Sun then it is Vasi yoga. If there are planets (other than Moon, Rahu, Ketu) in 2^nd house from Sun then it is Vesi yoga. If there are planets (other then Moon, Rahu, Ketu) in both sides of Sun then it is Ubhayachari yoga.

Vasi Yoga: The term ‘Vasi’ comes from the words ‘Vasayati, Avvasat’ etc which means ‘(to come and) to reside’ or to ‘create fragrance’. This words also point to inherent interest, interest caused by the frozen memories of the past birth, knowledge, culture, creating fragrance etc. You may remember another similar word ‘Vasana’ which means ‘fragrance’, ‘interest’ etc. As per Puranas ‘Vasana’ is another name for the Sun’s wife ‘Sajna’ as well. Thus term ‘Vasi’ points to all these, but generally positive results.  It points to the past, paternal property, inherited wealth, luck that we already have as a result of the actions of previous karma, culture. But don’t be so sure about the result – because it can have two variations –Subha Vasi and  Papa Vasi.  As you could imagine Subhavasi indicate the bundle of beneficial karma from the past, and Papa vasi that of maleficial karma. And the results too would be accordingly.  In case of Papavasi not only that he is cursed, his father too!

Also remember that like in case of every yoga, the yoga depends a lot on the strength of depositor of Sun. For example if Sun is in 2^ndhouse, but if the beneficial 2^nd house lord goes to lagna (12^th from 2^nd house) – then such a vasi yoga is as good as not having!

Vesi Yoga: The term ‘Vasi’ comes from the words ‘Vesati, Vivesa, Avesit’ etc wich means ‘To go (and to reside)’. In the previous case if it was the fragrance from the past (Purva karma), here the result are of future – karma accumulated by own efforts of the native.  Planets in 2^ndhouse from Sun, indicate that native will earn wealth and prosperity with his own effort – with bad karma or good karma depends on whether the planets in 2^nd house to Sun are beneficial or maleficial. 12^th is past, Sun is present and 2^nd house is future.  12^th is inherited property – Sun is atmabala (will power) – 2nd house is acquired property.  12^th is culture (precipitated results of the past learning) – Sun is potential – 2^nd house is the potential to learn. In this way understand this. But don’t jump to the result so fast – because it can have two variations –Subha Vesi and  Papa Vesi.  As you could imagine Subhavaei indicate indulging in beneficial karma (beneficial for the world), and Papa vesi that of maleficial karma (maleficial for the world). And the results too would be accordingly.  In case of Papavesi not only that he is cursed, his son too!

Ubhayachari: The literal meaning is ‘moving in both sides’. Yes, when there are planets in both sides (in 12^th as well as 2^nd house) of Sun, then it is called Ubhayachari yoga. Another name for Ubhayachari yoga is Kartari yoga.  The term Kartari means scissors. It can also mean knife, sward, cutting, sharp instrument used to cut even thin golden sheets etc.  Don’t jump to result before knowing whether the Ubhayachari yoga that we speak about is Subha kartari or Papa kartari.  If benefics in both sides of Sun, then  it is Subha kartari and the results positive – as you know by now the native not only will get inheritance but also build upon it himself in most positive way. If malefics in both sides of Sun, then it is Papa kartari and the results negative – especially for the world at large, whether the native benefits or not.  Since one who sow crime reaps crime itself, chances are that one who sow bad karma reaps the same itself, eventhough it cannot be certain whether the bad results will come to him in this birth or the other.  At time it would be seen that the native indulges in malicious actions and reaps a lot of reward in case of Papa kartari – but usually such people would be devoid of mental peace and integrity.
